SACRAMENTO, CALIF. Kansas University's Sheldon Battle and Jeremy Mims advanced past the first day of the NCAA Division One Outdoor Track and Field championships Wednesday at Alex Spanos Sports Complex.
Battle threw the hammer 199 feet, 5 inches to place fifth in his heat and moved on to Friday's final. Mims was second in his heat of the 800 in 1:48.94 and advanced to today's semis.
In the 110 hurdles, Kansas' Julius Jiles was fourth in his heat in 14.08 seconds, but he placed fifth in the semifinals in 13.94 and failed to advance to Friday's final.
KU's Abby Emsick fouled out of the discus, and in the long jump, Jayhawk Chaarisse Bacchus placed 14th at 19-11/4 and did not advance.
