Signee Simien sheds sling

Kansas basketball signee Wayne Simien appears well on the road to recovery.

The 6-foot-8, 240-pound Leavenworth High senior forward, who had surgery to repair torn ligaments in his right shoulder on April 2, had a soft sling removed by doctors on Monday.

Simien will work on stretching his arm the next two weeks, then begin rehabilitation.

“It’s great to get it off, especially with prom and everything coming up,” Simien said Monday after being examined in Lawrence. “Definitely being in a sling hampers what you can do. You can’t do anything to improve your game. Now I can at least move it around a little bit.

“Right now I’m working on range of motion. It’s pretty stiff, actually. It’s been in that sling four weeks so I’ve got to expect that.”

He was told Monday his recovery was right on schedule.

“I won’t be having any contact until the end of the summer or beginning of fall,” Simien said. “I will be able to start shooting in June and work out individually, but no contact until fall.

“The doctor’s words were encouraging. I’m taking little baby steps and hopefully will be OK this fall.”
