JOPLIN, MO. ? Kansas University’s Scott Russell qualified for the NCAA Indoor meet in the weight throw during the Missouri Southern Open Invitational track and field meet Saturday in Joplin, Mo.
Russell, a senior All-American, won the weight throw competition with a toss of 70-2 1/4. KU junior Ryan Speers won the shot put with a toss of 61-0, provisionally qualifying him for the indoor meet as well.
Charlie Gruber, a senior All-American, won the mile in 4:08.57 and also ran a leg in the winning 4×400 meter relay team. Jabari Wamble, who also was a member of the 4×400 relay team, won the 200 meter dash with a time of 22.05.
On the women’s side, Jennifer Foster placed second in both the shot put (45-10 3/4) and weight throw (50-2) events. Senior All-American Andrea Branson finished third in the pole vault with a mark of 11-9 3/4, while the Jayhawks 4×400 meter relay team took second with a time of 4:00.54.
Kansas will travel to the Missouri Invitational on Friday.
