Kansas University football coach Mark Mangino announced Monday he has named Dave Doeren as the new linebackers coach.
“Dave is a rising star in the coaching ranks,” Mangino said in prepared remarks. “He was instrumental in Montana’s national championship season. Dave is a tireless recruiter and a diligent worker.”
As secondary coach and recruiting coordinator for two seasons, Doeren helped guide the University of Montana Grizzlies to the NCAA Div. I-AA national championship in 2001.
Doeren coached seven all-conference defensive backs, including two All-America selections, while helping Montana to a combined 28-3 two-year record, two conference championships and one national title.
In winning the national championship in 2001, Montana finished the year with a 15-1 record. The Grizzlies were 13-2 in 2000 and lost in the national championship game.
Doeren was a defensive graduate assistant for two seasons at the University of Southern
California, where he helped USC lead the nation in interceptions in 1998. The Trojans led the NCAA in turnover margin and were second in interceptions in 1999.
From 1995 to 1997, Doeren served as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Drake University. He took over as defensive coordinator in 1997.
Doeren got his start coaching in 1994 in Kansas. He was wide receivers and defensive line coach at Shawnee Mission Northwest High School. A graduate of Bishop Miege
High School, Doeren was a four-year letterman at Drake and earned Academic All-America honors during his college career.
He and his wife, Sara, have a son, Jacob.
Doeren represents the eighth appointment to Mangino’s coaching staff, joining Dave Borberly, Bill Young, Nick Quartaro, Pat Henderson, Travis Jones, Brandon Blaney and Clint Bowen.
