Kansas women’s tennis wins 4 singles matches

? Kansas University’s Monica Sekulov, Cheryl Mallaiah, Courtney Steinbock and Emily Haylock all claimed victories in the rain-shortened first round of the Hurricane Invitational on Friday.

In the first singles flight, Sekulov beat New Mexico State’s Elke Blodan, 6-3, 6-3, and Mallaiah downed Oral Robers’ Marlena Maciolek, 6-4, 6-1.

In the second singles flight, Steinbock hammered NMSU’s Claire Hamilton, 6-1, 6-0, but Kansas’ Kim Lorenz fell to New Mexico State’s Stella Veerman, 6-1, 6-1.

Haylock pounded Oklahoma State’s Erin Pauchnik, 6-1, 6-2, in singles flight No. 4.

In doubles, Steinbock and her sister, Kristen, beat Texas Christian’s Karolina Roubickova and Paty Aburton, 8-5, in the top flight, but Sekulov-Mallaiah fell to Oral Roberts’ Maciolek-Clair Waltman, 9-8 (4). Haylock-Lorenz beat New Mexico State’s Bibbit Stoeckel-Patricia Diaz, 9-7.

The six-team tournament will continue today.
