Texas Tech tops KU in five games

By Christina Woods, Journal-World Sports Writer     Oct 1, 2000

What would have been a sweet victory for Amy Myatt turned bittersweet.

Myatt’s 700th career kill placed her in Kansas University’s volleyball record books, but that was not enough to defeat Texas Tech. The Red Raiders outlasted the Jayhawks, 15-11, 5-15, 7-15, 15-12, 15-6, on Saturday at Horejsi Center.

Myatt, a senior from Iowa City, Iowa, had a team-leading 19 kills for KU, 11-4 overall and 2-4 in the Big 12.

“We’re trying to stay positive,” Myatt said. “Monday we’ll go back in the gym, come up with a game plan and keep fighting because it’s going to go our way one of these days.”

KU’s next match is Wednesday at rival Kansas State. Texas Tech improved to 15-1 overall and 5-1 in the Big 12.

“We played well against the opponent in beginning but faded in the fourth,” KU coach Ray Bechard said. “We could have won Game One as well, but Texas Tech is a good team.”

In Game Two, Myatt and Danielle Geronymo combined for 18 kills.

Tech rallied in the final two games and the overall victory. The Raiders were never in trouble in game five.

“We played well during the two games we won,” Bechard noted. “We thought this was a winnable match for us, but we seemed to fade in the last two games.”
