Des Moines, Iowa ? Kansas junior Scott Russell has won track’s Triple Crown.
Russell, who won the javelin at the Texas Relays and Kansas Relays, placed first on Friday at the Drake Relays, throwing 231-8. He outdistanced Justin St. Clair of Washington, who notched second in 227-5.
“I think he feels good about the fact he’s won the three. It’s quite an accomplishment,” KU coach Gary Schwartz said after Russell’s third straight Drake Relays victory. “He’s a little frustrated because some of the technical stuff is bugging him, plus he’s had some nagging injuries. It wasn’t real pretty, but winning is winning.”
KU’s Andrea Bulat notched third in the women’s javelin in 148-11. Nicole Chimko of Minnesota won in 161-5.
“Andrea didn’t feel she was very aggressive onthe runway,” Schwartz said.
Also for KU, Vladim Gvozdetskiy qualified for today’s pole vault finals. Andrea Branson will also compete in the pole vault today.
