Baylor women pound Jayhawks

? No. 2-seeded Baylor stopped No. 7-seed Kansas, 5-2, in a Big 12 women’s tennis championship quarterfinal match on Friday at the Plaza Tennis Center.

KU’s Cheryl Mallaiah was a winner at No. 2 singles, stopping Katja Kovac, 6-4, 6-1. Also, Christi Wagenaar won at No. 6, topping Claudia Aguilar, 6-2, 7-5.

Singles Jahnavi Parekh, BU, def. Brooke Chiller, 6-2, 6-0.Cheryl Mallaiah, KU, def. Katja Kovac, 6-4, 6-1.Vida Mulec, BU, def. Monica Sekulov, 6-2, 6-3.Karin Andersson, BU, def. Tiffany Chang, 6-4, 6-3.Frida Borjesson, BU, def. Lisa Mallaiah, 6-3, 7-6(6).Christi Wagenaar, KU, def. Claudia Aguilar, 6-2, 7-5.

Doubles Kovac-Mulec, BU, def. Chiller-C. Mallaiah, 8-2.

Yet Baylor claimed straight-set victories at Nos. 1, 3, 4 and 5 and won at No. 1 doubles.

“I think Baylor was an extremely beatable team,” KU coach Jenny Garrity said. “We competed well in singles. We fought to get ourselves in a position to win, but we just did not do it.

“Baylor is a very talented team and I think they can beat Texas A&M tomorrow.”

Texas A&M tripped Nebraska to advance to today’s semis, 5-4.

“It was a very good match. Kansas is a very good team,” Baylor coach Dave Luedtke said. “We came out with a high energy level and a lot of excitement and won the earlier matches. We knew a good start was important and fortunately we got off to a good one.”

Baylor improved to 20-3. KU, 13-12, has an outside shot at gaining a berth to the NCAA championships.
