Marcus, Markieff Morris KU's two best against Colorado

1. Marcus Morris: The Big 12 Player of the Year has been the Big 12 tournament’s most outstanding player so far. Had 20 points, 13 rebounds, four assists and three steals.

2. Markieff Morris: Started the game with great energy and it never wore off. Non-stop hustle resulted in 20 points, eight rebounds and two blocked shots. Got hacked hard repeatedly, never lost his cool and made 7 of 8 free throws.

3. Tyrel Reed: Hit two huge threes late in the game to keep Colorado at a safe distance. Nailed one from the right corner on a pass from Tyshawn Taylor with 4:22 left to put KU up 79-67. Made another with 2:14 remaining from the left corner to give KU a 82-70 lead. Made 3 of 6 three-pointers.

4. Tyshawn Taylor: Drove hard and made things happen for himself and teammates and did a nice job of drawing fouls. Scored 15 points, made 7 of 8 free throws and had four assists (and four turnovers).

5. Brady Morningstar: Shots weren’t dropping, but made some terrific passes. Like a great pool player who can see shots average hacks can’t, Morningstar can see passing angles others can’t. He had a reception that was even better than any of his passes when Marcus Morris led him with a long pass, a little too long, on a run-out and Morningstar corralled it before it flew out of bounds and put up an off-balance shot off the glass that went in. Had five assists and one turnover, a typical ratio for him.

6. Mario Little: Hit a big three-pointer and picked up two rebounds in 12 minutes.

7. Thomas Robinson: Had three points and two rebounds in 10 minutes. With both twins playing so well and staying out of foul trouble, minutes were difficult to earn.

8. Elijah Johnson: Had three points and two rebounds, but didn’t break down the defense the way Taylor did on this night.

9. Josh Selby: Made a lot happen, some good, some bad, in 11 minutes. Totaled six points and four rebounds, but had two turnovers and made just 2 of 6 shots.

10. Travis Releford: Played one minute.

In the post-game, Self also credited Tyrel's defense for Higgins only hitting 1 of 11 shots.

Of Marcus' 24 rebounds the last 2 days, 15 have been offensive. Remarkable work.

That's Gooden-esque. Drew was an OR'ing fool.

I don't "hate" any other school. But, if I did - UT would be at the top of the list. Mizery may be hillbillies high on meth and delusions of grandeur, but they never shook down KU for lunch money. Barbeque Bevo.

EJ & Josh both contributed more to the game than TRob.

Gee, Hawks. You were so terrible today. I mean, just once do you think you could hit 100% of your free throws? Would have lost if we hit our normal %.

I've got my barbie on slow burn. Goes on high when the Hawks win the slugfest tomorrow. Just hope JoCovan Brown misses a few tomorrow. He has always hit them out the okole late in the game against KU.

KU jumps ahead by 10+, then holds the shorthorns off by hitting their freethrows, and winning by 5. In the process, fouling out 3 Texas bigs.

1 seed in the Southwest Regional.

No fallout over the tsunami. The precautions were unbelievable, but the alternative (see Japan) would have been catastrophic. Mahalo for the concern.

Pretty much agree with Keegan. TT was really needed today and came through.

Loved Brady's sitting on his butt rebound. Didn't think there was any way he would get the basket off of Marcus long pass. Great highlight.

Can anybody give the reason that Travis releford has been benched ? I think it's hard to ever question HCBS expertise but this one is puzzling . Has HCBS commented at all ?

He just fell victim to the numbers game. Self has said he isn't going to rotate 6 guys in on the perimeter. Taylor, Selby, Reed, Morningstar, EJ. Throw in Mario Little occasionally playing the 3 and there are just no minutes to be had. Self has said before that Travis was coming on strong and his injury set him back, and that he would have to beat somebody out to see the court more. It's really apparent that Brady, Tyrel, and TT are going to see the court no matter what. Self has proven that he will play them no matter how poor they are playing (case in point - Reed has 2 turnovers on consecutive possessions early in the game. Self calls a timeout, Tyrel remains in the game and EJ gets replaced by Tyshawn. Puzzling). EJ is seeing minutes because he has proven he can play the point with some consistency, although Self is clearly reverting back to giving Tyshawn the bulk of the minutes. With Selby...we see Self limiting his minutes but continuing to play him. I imagine this is in hopes of keeping him another year, as well as sending a message to any other highly ranked recruits that he won't give up on them.

  • 1 Especially regarding recruiting OAD's.

I guess I was assuming too much – figured "highly ranked" would include most of the OAD crowd.
