Aggressive Collins takes No. 1 post

Blog: The Keegan Ratings

Subscribe

After each KU basketball game this season, this is where you can find out the hardwood equivalent of The Nielsen Ratings from Journal-World sports editor Tom Keegan. He'll rate the Jayhawk scholarship players' individual performances, telling you who was worth tuning in to watch. If you agree or maybe even differ, make sure to comment and tell Tom how you really feel. (Scoring: Each week, the top player in the ratings will be awarded 10 points. Second best gets nine points. Third best gets eight points, and so on and so on. The season standings are at the bottom.)

1. Sherron Collins: Kept the team in aggressive mode the whole way and did a magnificent job distributing the ball on the fastbreak. Also made 4 of 6 three-point shots. Finished with 25 points, six assists, five rebounds and five turnovers.
2. Cole Aldrich: Dunks with incredible force, runs the floor hard and uses his long arms to dominate the boards. Finished with 19 points, 14 rebounds and two blocked shots.
3. Tyshawn Taylor: Based on his performance in the past two games, he’s back and better than ever. Made good decisions in determining when to drive to the hoop and how to contort his body at the end of the drive. Attempted just seven field goals and finished with 15 points and six assists.
4. Markieff Morris: Had six points and seven rebounds in 15 physical minutes.
5. Tyrel Reed: Made 3 of 4 three-pointers, had three assists and did not turn it over in 18 minutes.
6. Mario Little: Broke out of his slump with five points, six rebounds, two assists and three steals in 15 minutes.
7. Marcus Morris: Had four points, five rebounds and two blocked shots in 11 minutes.
8. Brady Morningstar: Would have jacked the crowd if his one-handed dunk attempt hadn’t popped out. Is in a mini-shooting slump, hitting 1 of 8 field goals and misfiring on all four three-point attempts in the past two games.
9. Travis Releford: Played five minutes without turning it over and contributed an assist.
10. Quintrell Thomas: Scored three points and picked up a rebound to go with two turnovers in six minutes.
11. Tyrone Appleton: Played two minutes, scored two points and had a turnover.

Cole really fired the crowd today. The dunks were thunderous, the blocks were vicious, nearly humiliating! Loved to see the team and the crowd feed off of each other today. On TV (for the time that CBS was playing it anyways), you could just see it on the team's faces, and you could hear it in the crowd. When the announcers talked about not being able to hear the whistle or the horn? Every time we needed a play to shake the walls and keep the fire going, we got it. Man, I love beatin' tiggers! I had no doubt that this was exactly what was going to happen. They barely snuck by us at their house, I knew we would destroy them at ours!

is the capt. Kirk halftime speech going to be posted here or on YouTube? also, is there a way to have LJW post the videos that show before games? the available YouTube postings are taken from phones... crappy quality to say the least. someone's gotta hook-up the out-of-town 'Hawks.

I love the way they have adapted Coles game to the smaller, quicker, more agile PF's that predominate college BB. He's playing a step off, daring them to shoot from long range, wiling to half contest a shot while sitting back out of foul trouble and dominating the paint for as much of the game as he wants to play. He's the big brother that always has your back. What a treat to see Cole and this entire team find their identity.

I don't think that the keegan ratings should be linear. They should be exponential, because I think that the people atop the rankings are generally much more important than those at the bottom. Even the top two, here they only differ by one point, but what about a game when there is only one player that stands out? It still only differs by one point. That creates a flaw in the naive simplicity of these ratings. Maybe they shouldn't even be exponential, maybe they should be based on the actual stats from the game. But, then I guess the reason that I read these after every game is because they are based on another person's opinion, and I want to compare your opinion to my opinion. So making an algorithim that computerizes these rankings would take all the fun out of it. So keep everything the same. I like it Keegan.
