KU, Self take look at Class of 2014

The July college basketball recruiting evaluation period was not only about tracking players in the high school Class of 2013, but juniors in the Class of ‘14 as well.

Rivals.com last week spotted KU coaches at games of Trayvon Reed and Paschal Chukwu at the AAU Super Showcase in Orlando, Fla.

Reed, a 7-foot-1 junior center from Shiloh High in Snellville, Ga., who is ranked No. 21 in the Class of 2014, is being pursued by KU, North Carolina, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Miami, South Carolina, Tennessee and others. Chukwu, a 7-0 unranked junior center from Trinity Catholic in Stamford, Ct., is being recruited by KU, Pittsburgh, UConn, Cincinnati, Virginia Tech and others.

On Saturday, KU coach Bill Self was in the stands at Okun Fieldhouse in Shawnee to watch Tyus Jones, a 6-1 junior point guard from Apple Valley (Minn.) High, who is ranked No. 5 nationally in the Class of ‘14. The Howard Pulley AAU playmaker, who has not yet narrowed his list of schools, is being recruited by KU, Michigan State, Kentucky, North Carolina, SMU and others.

Jones took the court against Dom Collier, a 6-1 junior point guard out of Denver East High, who has KU, Arizona, Colorado, Iowa and many others on his list. The KC Run GMC standout is the No. 62-rated player in the Class of ‘14.

Chicago Curie High junior Cliff Alexander, who is out of action with a foot injury, tells Rivals.com that Michigan State and Kentucky are his leaders. The 6-9, 240-pounder, who is ranked fourth overall, also is considering KU, Illinois, DePaul, Iowa, Wisconsin, Ohio State, Florida, Florida State, North Carolina, UCLA, UConn and others.

Visitors: Grace Prep (Arlington, Texas) senior teammates Karviar Shepherd and Jordan Mickey will make official campus visits to KU this fall, Urban DFW Elite coach Jazzy Hartwell tells JayhawkSlant.com.

Shepherd, a 6-10, 225-pound center, who is ranked No. 34 nationally in the Class of 2013, has a list of KU, UCLA, SMU, TCU, Texas A&M;, Louisville, Florida State, Gonzaga, Georgetown, LSU, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas, Baylor, Tulsa, Georgia Tech, Harvard, Marquette, Tennessee, North Texas and USC.

Mickey, a 6-7, 210-pound forward who is ranked No. 51, lists KU, Baylor, Duke, Houston, Kansas State, Kentucky, Louisville, Missouri, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Providence, SMU, TCU, Texas, Texas A&M; and Texas Tech.

Tulsa talk: Former KU hoops All-American and assistant coach Danny Manning saw his first head coaching job at Tulsa become a lot more challenging when the Hurricane’s top two returning players — Jordan Clarkson and Eric McClellan — elected to transfer.

“It’s kind of one of those deals where you deal with it and roll with the punches,” Manning told CBSsports.com last week from an AAU Tournamment in Las Vegas. “With this team now, every player has ownership in it and everyone has leadership responsibilities.”

As far as his coaching philosophy, Manning said: “For me, as a coach, a lot of it is life lessons. I want all of our men to step out on the court and be tough, but off the court, we want them to be wonderful young men. But they have to understand basketball is something that they do. It’s not who they are. We have to put them in a situation when they leave for college they’re accountable young men.”

Rankings: Kansas University’s athletic department placed 52nd of 273 teams in the Learfield Directors Cup, which awards points to schools based on the finishes of each school’s men’s and women’s athletic teams.

KU placed eight out of 10 schools that made up the Big 12 last school year. Texas placed fifth nationally, followed by Texas A&M; (11), Oklahoma (16), Baylor (26), Oklahoma State (40), Iowa State (44), Missouri (50), KU (52), Kansas State (62) and Texas Tech (68).

Of the two schools entering the Big 12 for the 2012-13 school year ... West Virginia ranked No. 43 and TCU No. 56 nationally.

KU placed 72nd overall during 2010-11.

Personally, I would rather he made 2013 his top priority depending on scholarships. Obviously in today's recruiting world, you need to look several years in advance but I think with maybe one additional top ranked player who comes through, 2013 could be HCBS's next championship class.

Nce improvement for the athletic program this year. There was another article recently with a different but similar list that had KU placed even better.

BainDread 6 years, 3 months ago

As I posted yesterday, the previous list (Capital One Cup) is a poor indicator of the strength of a school's overall athletic program. Only the top ten teams in each sport count in the scoring. All KU's C.O.C. points came from men's basketball and women's T&F. The Learfield Directors Cup standings appear to be more representative of overall strength, as all teams making the end-of-season tournaments score points. Most of the improvement in KU's Learfield score came in the women's sports of soccer, basketball, and T&F.

Interesting. I thought that KU was completely out of the picture with Mickey and Shepherd. They don't even mention Kansas anymore.

soapisurfriend 6 years, 3 months ago

Where are you referring to? Every major recruiting site still lists Kansas as a finalist for both. In fact, I believe that Shepard declared that he doesn't even have an official list over the weekend at a Vegas tournament, and many schools that both are considering have not even offered (Kansas has offered both).

Robert Brock 6 years, 3 months ago

Mickey and Shepherd stopped listing or mentioning KU. I couldn't care less whether Rivals, Scout, or ESPN still has collections of outdated lists; that is what I expect from the "experts."

soapisurfriend 6 years, 3 months ago

Yeah, except you forgot to mention where they stopped listing KU? If you're not referring to rivals or scout or whoever you must be referring to someone else? Personal interviews, perhaps? None that I've seen.

I would strongly advise the staff not waste their time recruiting Tyus Jones.

My little brother plays on Tyus' AAU team and I am 100% positive he will be going to Duke for school.

We got Frankamp any way.

Ron Franklin 6 years, 3 months ago

That's great insight, but I'm sure these coaches have egos and think they can persuade him. In fact, I'd bet Calipari could persuade him with WW and some Scrilla.

addlime 6 years, 3 months ago

Tell your little brother to get to work!

Ben Simonett 6 years, 3 months ago

It's a lost cause.

Coach K got involved early and has won over the parents. Plus Tyus is really big into Nike so theres no chance he plays for an adidas school.

Kentucky is a Nike school so Cal might be able to buy him but his family isn't hurting for money.

Michael Bratisax 6 years, 3 months ago

Agree benny..Jones will be playing at Duke unless something unexpected happens. Coach K still recognizes talent early and puts in the to get his top prospects.

"Shepherd, a 6-10, 225-pound center, who is ranked No. 34 nationally in the Class of 2013, has a list of KU, UCLA, SMU, TCU, Texas A&M, Louisville, Florida State, Gonzaga, Georgetown, LSU, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas, Baylor, Tulsa, Georgia Tech, Harvard, Marquette, Tennessee, North Texas and USC."

Good to see he's narrowed it down. It would be easier to list who wasn't on his list.

2013 seems to be a crucial class for talent infusion.

We need Barber or Seldon at guard, and we need the impact big .. Randle, Lawrence, or Shepherd. That's 4 with Greene and Frankamp. Top 5 class. Maybe the #1 class. We need that type of class every so often.

Wayne Seldon would be an absolute home run if we didn't get Barber for the backcourt, but doubt we have a real chance there. It seems like Demetrius Jackson is the real back up plan. The impact big is really, really crucial.

Was curious if anyone has heard anything on a player outside the top 100 .. Junior Etou. Perhaps a sleeper in the 2013 class .. He's outside the top 100. Heard about this guy related to the tournaments this weekend in KC and Florida, then looked him up. I looked on Rivals and it lists that we made an offer. New to the game, meaning started in his teens -- Serge Ibaka's cousin (ESPN says). But ESPN doesn't say that we offered .. it says K-State has.

Ben Simonett 6 years, 3 months ago

We'd need Barber and Randle to land the top recruiting class.

One of the two should solidify a top 5

Michael Bratisax 6 years, 3 months ago

Would love to have the #1 recruiting class but unless one of our bigs really comes on strong, I would rather see us get a top power forward from what's left of the 2013 class...which still has some top talent.

The two recruits that left Manning have to be transferring to a school for the basketball retarded. Incredibly bone headed moves.

Karviar Shepherd has to come to KU. His nickname will be "Russian Karviar."

Two footers available; that's nice. Hope we get one.

Cliff Alexander...welcome to Baja Chicago!

Michael Bratisax 6 years, 3 months ago

Maybe Tulsa's Mayor has vowed to close all the Chick-Fil-A's. Other than that, they are incredibly boneheaded.

Dan Harris 6 years, 3 months ago

J-bate, I agree 100% Instead of learning from one of the best in Manning lets transfer to The perpetual School of I dont gve a damn!

Love this:

Danny gets it.

Danny, Larry Brown and Frank Martin are undergoing some fine summer days, filtering lineups. Which of them will post the best record in two years?

TexasHawk.22short,

Never good to hear from you. Are you still eating your own waste matter?

Jack Wilson 6 years, 3 months ago

Would you be implying that his dining habits are retarded?

LAJayhawk 6 years, 3 months ago

Wow, JB and HEM both removed for violation of user agreement. Wonder what that was all about.

Oh, wait, TexasHawk44 commented first. I probably have an idea.... :-)

Wish I coulda read the exchange though.....

TexasHawk44 6 years, 3 months ago

No you are not...the smartest guy around. We agree on something. You are a shining example of a mental weakling who would rather serve as the head of a mouse than the tail of a lion. I suppose I should simply ignore your squeaking when reading this site but there is something about vermin that makes one wish them gone.

jaybate 6 years, 3 months ago

.22short,

Then be gone, by all means. :-)

TexasHawk44 6 years, 3 months ago

You need some new material, Jaybate. You are still as hilarious and insightful as always -- which is not at all. Squeak...squeak goes your little brain. Let's hear the same lame response as usual. Squeak...

OK, I think we all agree that TexasHawk is a complete idiot (including, I suspect, TexasHawk him/herself. The big mystery is why on earth is he/she even wasting time on this site? What's the point, or WTF, TH?

TexasHawk44 6 years, 3 months ago

Ok Jaybare Jr, which minority or underprivlidged grouo do you want to pile on next? The handicapped wasn't enough for you and your idiot Messiah, Jaybate? Who is an idiot? Best laugh I have had in a while. Keep drinking the Jaybate Kool-Aid ...

definition of retarded: low or limited in intellectual or emotional development characterized by mental retardation

Don't be so politically correct that you are blind to the actual diagnosis. Maybe you were offended because you have been diagnosed as "developmentally disabled".

Ted Hume 6 years, 3 months ago

I didn't realize that the AMA designated general stupidity as a disorder. Sorry I offended the afflicted group.
