Former Kansas University and current NBA player Marcus Morris received a misdemeanor battery citation early Sunday related to an alleged fight at a Lawrence night club, Supervising City Prosecutor Jerry Little said Monday afternoon.
Kim Murphree, a Lawrence police spokeswoman, said police were called at 2:37 a.m. Sunday to The Cave, a nightclub in The Oread, 1200 Oread Ave., where an altercation began. She said a male employee alleged he was punched by another man after a verbal dispute that turned physical. It was also alleged another man punched the employee from behind.
Murphree said two men were given citations for misdemeanor battery. Little said Monday according to the citations, Morris, 22, and Julius K. Harris, 23, of Philadelphia, received tickets with notices to appear March 20 in Lawrence Municipal Court.
Morris played three years at KU and is a member of the Houston Rockets. He and his brother Markieff Morris, of the Phoenix Suns, were in Lawrence last weekend and attended the KU-Missouri game Saturday at Allen Fieldhouse.

Come on, Marcus! The reason you have friends with you at times like this is so when trouble starts they are the ones that throw the punches and take the fall. You have to pay for their bail and a lawyer, but at least you aren't in the news!
jbrownjib 1 year, 2 months ago
He needs to learn that there is a time not to be out in a club. It seems to me that most of these player/community confrontations occur after mid-night around closing. Maybe it's because the people who are out this late are really drunk. Sometimes walking away by leaving the establishment is the smart move.

thanks dad
seattlephog 1 year, 2 months ago
He's not wrong here. Ideally, one can stay at an establishment and stay away from these confrontations. If that means walking away from a fight, that is what you do. Just as you did on the court to avoid a Technical.
There are a lot of guys out there who are jealous of the KU players' rock star persona. So they want to prove they are better. Either that or some yokels from the east are trying to give our programs a bad name. ;)
I wasn't there however. I don't know what went down or what the two sides of the story are.

It's kind of a math problem:
Alcohol + Ego = Trouble (not necessarily talking about Marcus here)
Sometimes I wonder if directTV called it right in the ad where the guy wears an eye patch and so people believe he is tough but want to know how tough (so the guy gets beat up).
The twins were always built up as being tough guys from Philly by the press. So naturally, every bonehead wannabe tough guy in Lawrence will want to challenge them to see how tough they are.
If you take the Olympic boxing team into bar, they will get challenged left and right. The last thing you want to be known for while visiting a bar is the reputation for being tough... some moron with nothing to lose will want to show everyone why he is a guy with nothing to lose (a loser).
txrockchalk 1 year, 2 months ago
Well-stated, drgnslayr. I have witnessed before what you illustrated in your post. One time back when Tommy Morrison was in his heyday, I observed him hanging out on the sidewalk with some friends down in Westport, minding his own business. A group of punks came up to him and basically were trying to pick a fight with him. He kept his cool and walked away, but I could easily see how someone would retaliate just to shut the punks up.

More than likely, the guy was trying his best to get Marcus in an altercation. What better way to make a quick buck? That being said, Marcus was not smart to take the bait. This is likely to be a very expensive lesson for him.

Bouncers at bars are—invariably—giant tools.
Profile of a typical bouncer:
-Owns a multitude of “fitted” (i.e. way too f*cking tight) $150 designer t-shirts, many of which are bedazzled with sparkles.
-Is massive, mostly due to fat. Says things like “I’m just putting on muscle this semester. Next semester I’m going to get completely shredded.”
-Has strong opinions (good or bad) about supplements sold at GNC
-References omega 3 fatty acids at least three different times a day during different conversations
-Refuses to wear any shirt with sleeves while working out
-spends most of his time at the gym talking to other meatheads about how drunk he got over the weekend… usually loudly, so everyone within earshot knows he’s the man
-only respects other guys who can bench-press as much as him. Worships other guys who can bench more
-pleasures himself while watching the movie Roadhouse

gmac 1 year, 2 months ago
Way to go Marcus. I assume the sucker punch was thrown by Markeff. Ejections, Elbows, Trash Talk, Poor behavior with Ref's, and who can forget the thug talk to VCU last year before the game. Not soon after VCU beat them down the court and took it to them. Note to Morris Twins: not able to respesent us in a positive manner off the court, not able to get us to the Final Four on the court. Get out of town! Oh don't forget to not shoot people with a BB gun from your dorm room! I am so sick of these guys.

kesmithstl1 1 year, 2 months ago
not defending it, just not turning my back on one of the hardest workers KU has ever seen.
marchphog88 1 year, 2 months ago
I don't know if gmac's comment qualifies as a little "chipping on".
First of all, he brought up stuff on the court, which is completely irrelevant to whatever happened at the Cave.
Second, he told them to get out of town. Little different than calling them to task for poor behavior.
gmac 1 year, 2 months ago
On the court or off the court what does it matter? Against VCU one of them trashed talked beofre the game and motivated VCU more. Then in the first half both of the twins did nothing but watch VCU run past them down court. Their production in the first half, when VCU built there lead, was horrible, like 3 rebounds and 4 points (combined). After that and all the %$#@ that occurred during the year, with ejections, baby behavior with ref's, etc... I stopped giving them the benefit of the doubt. They do not respesent the standards I would like to see for a Kansas Basketball player.
plasticJHawk 1 year, 2 months ago
the Morris brothers showed a lot of growth and maturation while they were at KU, and they worked as hard on the court and in training as anyone could have asked from them.
While there is probably no way to take responsibility for this incident from his shoulders, it's not right (unless you have more information than this article) to take this story fragment and turn it into something as malicious as your post.
ralster 1 year, 2 months ago
Nope. gmac-govt-bailout+boston-outta-touch-jhawkfan got it wrong: Marcus+Tyshawn needed some help in the VCU game. Marcus 20pts, Tyshawn 14. How about your boy Reed going 1-9 from trey, huh? And what about a "BB gun"????? There was no mention in the history of either of the Twins ever, ever using such a dangerous thing as a .177 or .22 cal "BB gun" while on campus. Check your facts, as you apparently dont know Jack Schitt.
And ask the esteemed Bostonian WTF he means by "gonna defend the rich guy"? What kind of no-logic comment is that? So stupid on every level, it has to be called out! Even if Marcus was 100% guilty of whatever transpired, what does "rich guy" have to do with culpability or the evidence in question? You stupid pathetic lowlife, spoken like a true non-achiever, and definitely not like anybody in the law enforcement/legal field (where the evidence+facts make or break the case). Seriously, a "rich" comment??? You just waitin' around for your govt handout, arent ya? Thank you for defining yourself as the quintessential l.o.s.e.r. Some of us degree-earners+bust-azz workaholics actually have earned what we earn the hard way(& came from nothing, too). Get off your butt and go earn something for yourself, loser. Did you even go to KU?
After getting called "soft" repeatedly by Self, and getting humiliated by MichState in their frosh seasons, both the Twins were very hard workers, and turned themselves into lotto picks. But for a young man, 21-22yrs old, the NBA life and its risks are a huge, h-u-g-e adjustment for some personas, easier for others. Yes, precisely for the fact they could be targets for lawsuits, youngsters in the NBA need to pay heed to the rookie orientation warnings by the league. They arent the first to go down this road. Learn from the mistake (if its on Marcus). If not, still learn from it (dont be caught in a situation similar, period.)

Get the facts BB Gun article http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/news/story?id=3545569
First half the Morris twins DID NOT hustle down court and VCU took it to them. Check out the stats the first half with the twins, minimal rebounds and points. I remember watching VCU run right past them without them giving 100%! Check out the tape. VCU build the lead in the first half and they dogged it. I don't care about their final numbers, they sucked the first half when VCU built the large lead.
Not the kind of player I want to respresent Kansas Basketball, I don't care if we don't make it past the sweet 16 without them. Don't want them for their Poor Behavior.

holidaysmore 1 year, 2 months ago
Reserving judgement until the full story comes out. Both sides of the spectrum here.
You are high profile athlete. You are a celebrity now. People are going to get at you no matter how famous you are. You have become a target. You have to rise above that and keep it moving.
I know there are a lot of haters in Lawrence and from the surrounding area. Very, very jealous of the fame and publicity that these basketball players receive. This sounds like an incident that doesn't involve a 18 or 19 yr kid it probably had to do w/ a 'townie' or someone from KC in town for the party.
Either way you can't tell a guy how to live his life and you can't expect them to be caged up in a house or hotel for the rest of their lives. You just have to have better judgement in areas like that where there is a potential for trouble. Its one thing to prove how tough you are, its another to get black listed right out of the NBA.
RockChalk26 1 year, 2 months ago

holidaysmore: #2 According to the story the guy who claims he got hit was an employee at the bar.
ralster 1 year, 2 months ago
We are all speculating without full facts (myself included). Remember lotto-money players can make big targets for lawsuits, and if thats the case, Marcus needs to pay heed to the League's advice on how to be above all such ulterior-motive shenanigans. Think about it: some loser bouncer (what a "real job", lol...), but he is supposed to be "tough", yada, yada, yada...
Anyway, I stand behind Marcus until we learn fuller details. Imho, Self helped create the "swagger personas" the Twins displayed, and we know their mother is a golden person. So...until I learn more...
fu7il3 1 year, 2 months ago
So you would stand behind an athlete you don't know, instead of a bar employee you don't know, in fact, you will suggest the bar employee may have been fishing for a lawsuit.
People are ridiculously blinded by sports worship in this town.
ralster 1 year, 2 months ago
Exactly. Like I said, "until I learn more" about the legal facts. Same goes for you, buddy. I will admonish Marcus if he is proven guilty. But, I would admonish him right off the bat for even being around such a situation. Lotto-money players simply need to leave any low-life situation in a hurry. He could "lose face" 100 times over in front of what ever 'other party', but Marcus wakes up the next day still in his lotto-level life (that he earned). He needs to remember that 1 fact. The only thing he has to "reprezent" is his professional interests. It is all business now.
ralster 1 year, 2 months ago
...oh, and there is that little matter in our country of "innocent until proven guilty". So you can assume 'sports worship' just like you are assuming 'guilty', eh? And, you also assume I do not know Marcus and cannot vouch for his character...
fu7il3 1 year, 2 months ago
You are assuming the bouncer must have done something wrong. What is the difference? What seems more likely, a bouncer no one else had a problem with picking on Marcus, or Marcus, who has a history of having a temper and making stupid mistakes, even on the court with thousands of people watching him, being the cause of it.

Don't think most people realize that when you are a "celebrity," every drunk a** punk (and there are plenty at 2 AM in Larrytown) likes to try and get into it with you, just to prove how tough they are. Poor judgement, yes...but likely not any real criminal intent. What Marcus needs to learn is not to put himself in places and times where these things are likely to happen. Not an easy lesson to learn when you are young, but a necessary one.
Hammertoe 1 year, 2 months ago
