Former KU player Marcus Morris cited for misdemeanor battery

Former Kansas University and current NBA player Marcus Morris received a misdemeanor battery citation early Sunday related to an alleged fight at a Lawrence night club, Supervising City Prosecutor Jerry Little said Monday afternoon.

Kim Murphree, a Lawrence police spokeswoman, said police were called at 2:37 a.m. Sunday to The Cave, a nightclub in The Oread, 1200 Oread Ave., where an altercation began. She said a male employee alleged he was punched by another man after a verbal dispute that turned physical. It was also alleged another man punched the employee from behind.

Murphree said two men were given citations for misdemeanor battery. Little said Monday according to the citations, Morris, 22, and Julius K. Harris, 23, of Philadelphia, received tickets with notices to appear March 20 in Lawrence Municipal Court.

Morris played three years at KU and is a member of the Houston Rockets. He and his brother Markieff Morris, of the Phoenix Suns, were in Lawrence last weekend and attended the KU-Missouri game Saturday at Allen Fieldhouse.

Come on, Marcus! The reason you have friends with you at times like this is so when trouble starts they are the ones that throw the punches and take the fall. You have to pay for their bail and a lawyer, but at least you aren't in the news!

John Brown 2 years, 6 months ago

He needs to learn that there is a time not to be out in a club. It seems to me that most of these player/community confrontations occur after mid-night around closing. Maybe it's because the people who are out this late are really drunk. Sometimes walking away by leaving the establishment is the smart move.

0

seattlephog 2 years, 6 months ago

He's not wrong here. Ideally, one can stay at an establishment and stay away from these confrontations. If that means walking away from a fight, that is what you do. Just as you did on the court to avoid a Technical.

There are a lot of guys out there who are jealous of the KU players' rock star persona. So they want to prove they are better. Either that or some yokels from the east are trying to give our programs a bad name. ;)

I wasn't there however. I don't know what went down or what the two sides of the story are.

When I become rich and famous, I'm going to hang out at college bars and get into fights.

0

dgless21 2 years, 6 months ago

I would've sworn you were already rich and famous.

0

Pitt_Mackeson 2 years, 6 months ago

He got recalled from D-League a week ago. This is no way to stay in the NBA though.

0

Andy Tweedy 2 years, 6 months ago

On the surface, that sounds good, but have you seen the baggage some of these dudes have? Iverson, Kemp, the list goes on and on and one. He's got a ways to go!

0

kufankam 2 years, 6 months ago

But as a KU fan, you'd rather he not be on that list with "those guys"...

0

cobweb 2 years, 6 months ago

Looks like it was after closing time and they refused to leave because he's now in the NBA and too important to follow normal rules. What a jerk thing to do. Good luck in the d-league Marcus.

0

Eride 2 years, 6 months ago

What is with that bar and KU basketball players?

0

2 years, 6 months ago

Well-stated, drgnslayr. I have witnessed before what you illustrated in your post. One time back when Tommy Morrison was in his heyday, I observed him hanging out on the sidewalk with some friends down in Westport, minding his own business. A group of punks came up to him and basically were trying to pick a fight with him. He kept his cool and walked away, but I could easily see how someone would retaliate just to shut the punks up.

0

Good points. And that direcTV add cracks me up!!

0

jhox 2 years, 6 months ago

More than likely, the guy was trying his best to get Marcus in an altercation. What better way to make a quick buck? That being said, Marcus was not smart to take the bait. This is likely to be a very expensive lesson for him.

0

I'm betting all of these incidents have more to do with the tool-bag bouncers than the players.

hey... are you scared about tonite's game?

Bouncers at bars are—invariably—giant tools.

Profile of a typical bouncer:

-Owns a multitude of “fitted” (i.e. way too f*cking tight) $150 designer t-shirts, many of which are bedazzled with sparkles.

-Is massive, mostly due to fat. Says things like “I’m just putting on muscle this semester. Next semester I’m going to get completely shredded.”

-Has strong opinions (good or bad) about supplements sold at GNC

-References omega 3 fatty acids at least three different times a day during different conversations

-Refuses to wear any shirt with sleeves while working out

-spends most of his time at the gym talking to other meatheads about how drunk he got over the weekend… usually loudly, so everyone within earshot knows he’s the man

-only respects other guys who can bench-press as much as him. Worships other guys who can bench more

-pleasures himself while watching the movie Roadhouse

Way to go Marcus. I assume the sucker punch was thrown by Markeff. Ejections, Elbows, Trash Talk, Poor behavior with Ref's, and who can forget the thug talk to VCU last year before the game. Not soon after VCU beat them down the court and took it to them. Note to Morris Twins: not able to respesent us in a positive manner off the court, not able to get us to the Final Four on the court. Get out of town! Oh don't forget to not shoot people with a BB gun from your dorm room! I am so sick of these guys.

0

kesmithstl1 2 years, 6 months ago

don't be that guy! You can't cheer for them when they do good, but then turn your back when they do bad.

0

Bostonjhawkfan 2 years, 6 months ago

don't be that guy. if the dude gets into a fight, he deserves to get chipped on. seriously a fight? you're going to defend the rich guy who gets into a fight...seriously?

0

TwistedFish31 2 years, 6 months ago

And if it turns out that the "rich guy" was defending himself? None of us know what happened except for the people that were there.

0

kesmithstl1 2 years, 6 months ago

not defending it, just not turning my back on one of the hardest workers KU has ever seen.

0

Sam Constance 2 years, 6 months ago

I don't know if gmac's comment qualifies as a little "chipping on".

First of all, he brought up stuff on the court, which is completely irrelevant to whatever happened at the Cave.

Second, he told them to get out of town. Little different than calling them to task for poor behavior.

0

Greg McKean 2 years, 6 months ago

On the court or off the court what does it matter? Against VCU one of them trashed talked beofre the game and motivated VCU more. Then in the first half both of the twins did nothing but watch VCU run past them down court. Their production in the first half, when VCU built there lead, was horrible, like 3 rebounds and 4 points (combined). After that and all the %$#@ that occurred during the year, with ejections, baby behavior with ref's, etc... I stopped giving them the benefit of the doubt. They do not respesent the standards I would like to see for a Kansas Basketball player.

0

Jonathan Allison 2 years, 6 months ago

the Morris brothers showed a lot of growth and maturation while they were at KU, and they worked as hard on the court and in training as anyone could have asked from them.

While there is probably no way to take responsibility for this incident from his shoulders, it's not right (unless you have more information than this article) to take this story fragment and turn it into something as malicious as your post.

0

Greg McKean 2 years, 6 months ago

Get the facts BB Gun article http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/news/story?id=3545569

First half the Morris twins DID NOT hustle down court and VCU took it to them. Check out the stats the first half with the twins, minimal rebounds and points. I remember watching VCU run right past them without them giving 100%! Check out the tape. VCU build the lead in the first half and they dogged it. I don't care about their final numbers, they sucked the first half when VCU built the large lead.

Not the kind of player I want to respresent Kansas Basketball, I don't care if we don't make it past the sweet 16 without them. Don't want them for their Poor Behavior.

0

ancient_hawk 2 years, 6 months ago

Really? You honestly don't know the difference between an airsoft gun (which shoots plastic balls about 10 times as big as a BB at low velocity) and a BB gun (which shoots metal BBs at a much higher velocity)?

I'm surprised you didn't call it an assault rifle, moron.

How many misdemeanor battery tickets are issued each week in Lawerence or any other college town? How many made the news?

0

holidaysmore 2 years, 6 months ago

Reserving judgement until the full story comes out. Both sides of the spectrum here.

  1. You are high profile athlete. You are a celebrity now. People are going to get at you no matter how famous you are. You have become a target. You have to rise above that and keep it moving.

  2. I know there are a lot of haters in Lawrence and from the surrounding area. Very, very jealous of the fame and publicity that these basketball players receive. This sounds like an incident that doesn't involve a 18 or 19 yr kid it probably had to do w/ a 'townie' or someone from KC in town for the party.

Either way you can't tell a guy how to live his life and you can't expect them to be caged up in a house or hotel for the rest of their lives. You just have to have better judgement in areas like that where there is a potential for trouble. Its one thing to prove how tough you are, its another to get black listed right out of the NBA.

0

RockChalk26 2 years, 6 months ago

My two cents on how the fight started:

Drunk Guy: "Hey Marcus, how's the D-League?" (Marcus stares down drunk guy and punches him the face) Marcus: "About as much as you're going to enjoy that black eye"

holidaysmore: #2 According to the story the guy who claims he got hit was an employee at the bar.

0

fu7il3 2 years, 6 months ago

So you would stand behind an athlete you don't know, instead of a bar employee you don't know, in fact, you will suggest the bar employee may have been fishing for a lawsuit.

People are ridiculously blinded by sports worship in this town.

0

fu7il3 2 years, 6 months ago

You are assuming the bouncer must have done something wrong. What is the difference? What seems more likely, a bouncer no one else had a problem with picking on Marcus, or Marcus, who has a history of having a temper and making stupid mistakes, even on the court with thousands of people watching him, being the cause of it.

0

Don't professional athletes have clauses in their contracts that prohibit them from dangerous activities like skiing and skydiving? If so, they should include nightclubs in that clause. More bad things happen there than any other place.

0

I guess my question is why does a higher end hotel like the oread have a hip hop club in it? Maybe the 4 seasons will follow the oreads lead and open biker bars in their resorts.

0

Don't think most people realize that when you are a "celebrity," every drunk a** punk (and there are plenty at 2 AM in Larrytown) likes to try and get into it with you, just to prove how tough they are. Poor judgement, yes...but likely not any real criminal intent. What Marcus needs to learn is not to put himself in places and times where these things are likely to happen. Not an easy lesson to learn when you are young, but a necessary one.

0

Hammertoe 2 years, 6 months ago

a thug on and off the court. I'm sure he wouldn't have been charged if he was innocent. The article said an employee was punched from behind. I doubt the hotel employee was drunk. He was " on the clock ".

0

I take it you have never worked in a bar.

0

"""She said a male employee alleged he was punched by another man after a verbal dispute that turned physical. It was also alleged another man punched the employee from behind."""

You can be "sure" of two things – you don't know anything about police procedure – you don't know the meaning of the word you use (thug)

No charges have been proferred, merely a citation issued.

Typically, people who are pushed or bumped will claim to have been "punched" – especially people who have been thinking about profit to be made from minor altercations.

Must not have been too big a deal to them, both twins were out at Hollywood Casino on Sunday night dropping a decent amount of cash on the high limit blackjack table.

0

I have no idea what actually happened.

All I do know is that this is the second KU player to be accused of punching an employee of the Cave. From behind. By an employee of the Cave.

That is either one amazingly strange coincidence, or the bouncers at the Cave are too stupid to realize that they already used the "KU basketball player sucker-punched me" scam.

Really, Marcus? On a visit back to Lawrence for All-Star weekend, when everybody will be watching the former players in town for the big conference game?? C'mon, man. I like and support you, but think first before you put yourself in sticky situations like that. Because you are a public figure, your behavior reflects back on your team and former team/coaches. Part of growing up is thinking first.

Marcus, Jayhawk fans were thrilled to watch your progress in a Kansas uniform, and we are very proud that you represented the school and program so well, and made the most of the opportunity to become a millionaire. That said, we are not pleased to see you back in town, messing your nest and ours. If early morning bar scuffles are your current interest, please keep that stuff down in Texas, far away from the site where you are still looked upon as an athletic hero. It would appear to be in your best personal interest to be remembered, by those who really cared, as a reputable winner. The news of this incident is an insult to the folks who recruited, nurtured and developed your game and personna.
