Former KU player Marcus Morris cited for misdemeanor battery

Former Kansas University and current NBA player Marcus Morris received a misdemeanor battery citation early Sunday related to an alleged fight at a Lawrence night club, Supervising City Prosecutor Jerry Little said Monday afternoon.

Kim Murphree, a Lawrence police spokeswoman, said police were called at 2:37 a.m. Sunday to The Cave, a nightclub in The Oread, 1200 Oread Ave., where an altercation began. She said a male employee alleged he was punched by another man after a verbal dispute that turned physical. It was also alleged another man punched the employee from behind.

Murphree said two men were given citations for misdemeanor battery. Little said Monday according to the citations, Morris, 22, and Julius K. Harris, 23, of Philadelphia, received tickets with notices to appear March 20 in Lawrence Municipal Court.

Morris played three years at KU and is a member of the Houston Rockets. He and his brother Markieff Morris, of the Phoenix Suns, were in Lawrence last weekend and attended the KU-Missouri game Saturday at Allen Fieldhouse.

Marcus, Jayhawk fans were thrilled to watch your progress in a Kansas uniform, and we are very proud that you represented the school and program so well, and made the most of the opportunity to become a millionaire. That said, we are not pleased to see you back in town, messing your nest and ours. If early morning bar scuffles are your current interest, please keep that stuff down in Texas, far away from the site where you are still looked upon as an athletic hero. It would appear to be in your best personal interest to be remembered, by those who really cared, as a reputable winner. The news of this incident is an insult to the folks who recruited, nurtured and developed your game and personna.

If the hittee was in black and gold, hit him again.

Hope recruits were in bed...

I could swear I have read this article before... It is almost like the names are different, yet so similar that I could swear...

Can anybody tell me if it is the same damn employee or a buddy of said employee?

Hey, I have an idea, stay out of the Cave, the atmosphere cannot be THAT enticing.

in a bar at 2:30 am and somebody tries to pick a fight. thats weird. the only good news is that nobody got hurt and apparently cooler heads prevailed.

Really, Marcus? On a visit back to Lawrence for All-Star weekend, when everybody will be watching the former players in town for the big conference game?? C'mon, man. I like and support you, but think first before you put yourself in sticky situations like that. Because you are a public figure, your behavior reflects back on your team and former team/coaches. Part of growing up is thinking first.

There must be something about Axe: It has the potency to cause gorgeous women to throw themselves at you AND has the potency to cause bro-bra's to throw their fists at you. It's like cat-nip for morons!

I have no idea what actually happened.

All I do know is that this is the second KU player to be accused of punching an employee of the Cave. From behind. By an employee of the Cave.

That is either one amazingly strange coincidence, or the bouncers at the Cave are too stupid to realize that they already used the "KU basketball player sucker-punched me" scam.

Must not have been too big a deal to them, both twins were out at Hollywood Casino on Sunday night dropping a decent amount of cash on the high limit blackjack table.

At least he can afford bail now.

HawksFan417 2 years, 1 month ago

I was there. I'm friends with both sides.. The dispute started inside the club when a former player whose name will not be mentioned didn't want to pay for the table he had bought for the night. No It wasn't either of the twins. There was a slight altercation inside, but nothing serious. It was settled and paid for. As we were leaving a group of bouncers followed us out and the argument continued to escalate outside. The twins were already in their car infront of the hotel ready to leave when the other previous player alerted them that something was wrong. Them and a few other current players got out to make sure everything was okay. One of the bouncers put a current players brother in a head lock and essintially instigated the entire situation. Be proud that all current players that were there tried to break up the fight instead of participating.. Yeah I know they shouldn't have been there in the first place, but would you gone out after winning the Big IIX?

Come on Marcus!!! Have some class. You are not a college kid anymore. Grow up and have a little self control. Gee whiz!!! I have always been a fan. I guess that is why I am soooo disappointed in you. Do it for KU, if not for yourself. Otherwise, just disassociate and stay away. I am sad.

Why is this at the top of the list of stories? Honestly, I don't care unless it's one of our current players getting a citation.

There's less discussion after the Robinson Big 12 POTW article.

Bouncers have the worst complexes of any profession that comes to mind. I would look to place blame on the behemoths manning the door @ the Cave rather than Marcus. Wouldn't be surprised if one of the doormen instigated the whole thing.

The trueth is that nobody is surpised to hear that either of the Morris twins is involved in thug behavior.

0

Hammertoe 2 years, 1 month ago

a thug on and off the court. I'm sure he wouldn't have been charged if he was innocent. The article said an employee was punched from behind. I doubt the hotel employee was drunk. He was " on the clock ".

0

jrswift 2 years, 1 month ago

Don't think most people realize that when you are a "celebrity," every drunk a** punk (and there are plenty at 2 AM in Larrytown) likes to try and get into it with you, just to prove how tough they are. Poor judgement, yes...but likely not any real criminal intent. What Marcus needs to learn is not to put himself in places and times where these things are likely to happen. Not an easy lesson to learn when you are young, but a necessary one.

Thug 1 and Thug 2.... The Morris Twins. Nobody should be surprised by that one.

Flagrant 1 or flagrant 2? Making a basketball move perhaps?

I guess my question is why does a higher end hotel like the oread have a hip hop club in it? Maybe the 4 seasons will follow the oreads lead and open biker bars in their resorts.

Cave serving after hours? I doubt NBA players are hanging out after hours drinking pepsi.

Don't professional athletes have clauses in their contracts that prohibit them from dangerous activities like skiing and skydiving? If so, they should include nightclubs in that clause. More bad things happen there than any other place.

I want to see an MMA fight between Brock Berglund and Marcus.

Ralster Jayhawk 2 years, 1 month ago

We are all speculating without full facts (myself included). Remember lotto-money players can make big targets for lawsuits, and if thats the case, Marcus needs to pay heed to the League's advice on how to be above all such ulterior-motive shenanigans. Think about it: some loser bouncer (what a "real job", lol...), but he is supposed to be "tough", yada, yada, yada...

Anyway, I stand behind Marcus until we learn fuller details. Imho, Self helped create the "swagger personas" the Twins displayed, and we know their mother is a golden person. So...until I learn more...

RockChalk26 2 years, 1 month ago

My two cents on how the fight started:

Drunk Guy: "Hey Marcus, how's the D-League?" (Marcus stares down drunk guy and punches him the face) Marcus: "About as much as you're going to enjoy that black eye"

0

holidaysmore 2 years, 1 month ago

Reserving judgement until the full story comes out. Both sides of the spectrum here.

  1. You are high profile athlete. You are a celebrity now. People are going to get at you no matter how famous you are. You have become a target. You have to rise above that and keep it moving.

  2. I know there are a lot of haters in Lawrence and from the surrounding area. Very, very jealous of the fame and publicity that these basketball players receive. This sounds like an incident that doesn't involve a 18 or 19 yr kid it probably had to do w/ a 'townie' or someone from KC in town for the party.

Either way you can't tell a guy how to live his life and you can't expect them to be caged up in a house or hotel for the rest of their lives. You just have to have better judgement in areas like that where there is a potential for trouble. Its one thing to prove how tough you are, its another to get black listed right out of the NBA.

How many misdemeanor battery tickets are issued each week in Lawerence or any other college town? How many made the news?

My guess is words were said and rich and famous Marcus had his cool on until not so rich and famous "homeboy from philly" who was with him said "man heeelllllllll naw marc you gonna take that S*#@!!!!!" That is just my guess....

Bouncer: "Hey, Morris, how's the D League treating you, ha ha ha?"

BAM! POW!

Marcus: "How's my fist treating you, beeyatch?"

The Oread is poison at I hope Self bans all current players from going there.

Seriously, nothing to see here. Look away and move on, otherwise you may be hit with the familiar urge to freak out and start screaming "The sky is falling!" In the event that this is your thing, you'll be happy to know LJW will probably print an article about this everyday for the next 2-3 weeks. They love the 200+ rants each time.

0

mispay4ku 2 years, 1 month ago

:( I love when the guys come back to support the team but I wish they'd set a good example when they do. They are no longer under Self's authority but authority, in general, still stands.

The bigger deal to this will be the intentional tort lawsuit whomever he punched will likely file. Marcus is going to dish out some cash; that would be my guess anyway.....

Why is this article on the sports page? If a the business owner gets in trouble for the same crime does it show up in the business section. If a preacher gets pulled over does it show up in the religion section?

0

gmac 2 years, 1 month ago

Way to go Marcus. I assume the sucker punch was thrown by Markeff. Ejections, Elbows, Trash Talk, Poor behavior with Ref's, and who can forget the thug talk to VCU last year before the game. Not soon after VCU beat them down the court and took it to them. Note to Morris Twins: not able to respesent us in a positive manner off the court, not able to get us to the Final Four on the court. Get out of town! Oh don't forget to not shoot people with a BB gun from your dorm room! I am so sick of these guys.

0

Janet Scott 2 years, 1 month ago

If the punch was thrown due to a spat over a female, you get + 1000 points. If punches were thrown over anything else, you get - 1000 points and get to stand in the corner and wear a dunce cap for an hour, and have your picture plastered on the front page of Society section in the LJW.

0

Come on, Marcus! The reason you have friends with you at times like this is so when trouble starts they are the ones that throw the punches and take the fall. You have to pay for their bail and a lawyer, but at least you aren't in the news!
