KU coach Bill Self gives probable starters for Pittsburg State game

Kansas University basketball coach Bill Self acknowledged that “walk-ons will play” in Tuesday night’s exhibition opener against Pittsburg State.

The Jayhawks will be without Tyshawn Taylor and Elijah Johnson, who are serving two-game suspensions in the exhibition season. Also, Thomas Robinson is questionable because of a hyperextended left knee.

Self’s probable starters are: Naadir Tharpe, Conner Teahan, Travis Releford, Jeff Withey and either Robinson or Justin Wesley.

“Everybody’s got to play anyway, and then if you take two or three guys off your starting lineup … we’re going to be playing walk-ons tomorrow, there’s no question about that,” Self said. “And I’m not talking about the ones we put on scholarship. I’m talking about Jordan (Juenemann), which is fine, and Niko (Roberts). Those guys are going to get in the game. So that won’t be the same team will be playing in the Garden, unless we have a lot of injuries, but it will also give those guys an opportunity.”

Self said he thought the extra playing time for inexperienced players would be beneficial, especially for Tharpe. Self also said 6-foot-6 player Teahan would be playing inside, as well as on the perimeter.
