KU vs. Howard

Kansas defeated Howard, 89-34, on Thursday, Dec. 29, 2011 at Allen Fieldhouse.

Seldom-used Merv Lindsay, Christian Garrett, Niko Roberts and Jordan Juenemann became reacquainted with Kansas University’s basketball fans during a festive, feel-good 89-34 romp over Howard University on Thursday night in Allen Fieldhouse.

In all, 13 Jayhawks played five minutes or more on a night fans spent as much time spying on celebrity couple Jason Sudeikis and Olivia Wilde as watching KU easily claim its ninth win in 12 tries.

“I was proud of all my teammates. We all go through this together. We do Boot Camp together. We practice together. We do everything together. I was happy for everybody,” said Lindsay, a 6-foot-7 freshman out of Moreno Valley, Calif.

He exploded for nine points off 4-of-5 shooting (his first points in a KU uniform) with three rebounds (his first rebounds as well) while playing eight minutes.

“There are many ways you can contribute to a team,” noted Lindsay, who had played just four minutes in three games all season prior to Thursday. “Whether it’s cheering on the bench or getting in the game scoring and grabbing rebounds, you can do a lot of things. If you do anything and everything to help your team win, you’ll be all right.”

Lindsay’s favorite moment of the blowout — the 34 points allowed were third-fewest allowed in a game in the Bill Self era — had nothing to do with his own play.

“When I was under the rim, I went for a rebound. I heard Justin (Wesley, six points, five rebounds, 14 minutes) screaming,” Lindsay said. “I looked up, and I turned my head, and there he was dunking the ball. I ran down the court and looked at the big board to see the replay, but they didn’t even play it. I guess I’ve got to see ‘SportsCenter,’” he added of viewing Wesley’s vicious tip dunk.

There were other eye-pleasing plays, such as Thomas Robinson’s one-handed follow dunk on a night he had nine points and seven boards in 22 minutes.

Also, Tyshawn Taylor and Conner Teahan swished three threes apiece en route to 13 points apiece.

Jeff Withey had six blocks to go with 10 points.

KU dished 23 assists against 13 turnovers while forcing Howard into 24 turnovers against just six assists.

Just about everything proved pleasing to coach Bill Self, except for a blatant snub by his celebrity buddy Sudeikis, who never introduced Wilde to Self.

“I don’t even know who she is, other than the fact she was co-star on the show ‘House’ that I never missed an episode of,” Self said with a smile. “That’s being truthful. I loved that show. I like Jason OK, but I really was looking forward to meeting her, and they left early (with three minutes left).

“That’s kind of a bad deal. He wants tickets and he leaves early,” Self added, smiling.

Overall, Self said, “We started out good. We got after them early (in building 42-13 halftime lead). I thought we played with more energy and did some good things. We shared the ball. Then we just puttered around the second half.”

Taylor had five assists against just one turnover and Naadir Tharpe five assists against three turnovers in 17 productive minutes.

“That was a lot of fun,” said senior guard Teahan, who had five rebounds and an assist against no turnovers in 17 minutes. “Our crowd came out with a lot more energy than we expected, especially since it’s Christmas break. Once we got our big lead, we were able to stay focused. In the past, we haven’t done a great job of that, but fortunately we were able to do that, today.”

Noted senior Juenemann, who had five points and a board in 10 minutes: “It’s always great getting a win and getting comfortable so you’re able to show some things that we can do as a team. It’s nice to get back here and play in front of our crowd over the break. It was a great win.”

Of his playing time, he noted: “It’s great to get some time out on the court, especially with all the reps we have in practice. Some of the walk-ons and guys on the end of the bench haven’t been able to get in the game. It was nice coach gave us the opportunity to go out and play and have some fun.”

Next up is Saturday’s 3 p.m. matinee against North Dakota in Allen Fieldhouse.

One question, was it Howard or Brown that Jonathan Moxon got accepted to?

BigManU 1 year, 4 months ago

Brown!

"Jonathan Moxon your are under arrest for not being naked with some sophomore chick who wants to bathe you with her tongue, now take off your god damn clothes and get in the car."

"We shared the ball. Then we just puttered around the second half.”

Man, talk about hard to please! They outscored Howard 47-21 in the second half. I thought that was a little better than just "puttering around."

I know Howard is terrible, but it was still a great, consistent performance, and it was nice to finally see the team put together a complete game.

Yeah, but they expect that. This was basically a practice and I'm sure he wanted to be out on the floor re-running some of those plays, improving, showing effort for 40 minutes. He didn't become the best coach in America by sitting proud on top of Bison-like beat downs.

Also it's not like he didn't mention the good as well. You could also pull the rest of the quote.

"I thought we played with more energy and did some good things".

That's about all the good I really want to hear when the opponent is as bad as Howard. I don't mean to sound negative, but we do have K-State coming up on Wed. and it's no time to get soft.

I love it when the bench guys see some extended action on the court. They work hard in practice and deserve some time when possible. I really liked Lindsay's comments, too. Very team oriented.

"Next up is Saturday’s 3 p.m. matinee against North Dakota in Allen Fieldhouse."

Gary with an elegant closer. Matinee turns this sentence into something pleasing and special.

Bedore is a watch smith with language.

0

jaybate 1 year, 4 months ago

Thx 4 the assist, ict, but I actually meant to use watch-smith to indicate how fine and subtle Gary's professional use of language is. I apologize for forgetting to hyphenate the coined-term. Or maybe using jeweler would have helped. But a watch collector friend uses watch-smith, so it came to mind. He also collects shotguns uses gunsmiths. Maybe he coined the term from that. Anyway, I like watch-smith, but apologize for frustrating you.

Have you ever looked at a fine pre electric Hamilton wrist watch with a mid century modern design? Simple and elegant outside and intricate and balanced inside; that's what I meant about Gary's writing. I like one particular old Hamilton so much I bought a new electric retro version of it. Its accurate and goes a long time on a battery. But I miss the beautiful movement inside.

I liked the play on words in the headline, personally.

Pardon me for being grumpy but an inter-squad game with BenMac and Jamari would have been more productive than last night's debacle.

I agree with Jesse and feel that Howard may have been the worst opponent in HCBS's tenure..this includes the exhibition teams from Kansas!!!

The nice thing is all the guys who work so hard in practice got some actual live time.

On second thought...delete the grumpy part and let's just call last night a productive live scrimmage.

I agree with "Jaybate"...matinee is indeed a much more elegant word than beat down, massacre, butt-whippin', thrashing, pulverization, vaporizing or the old tried and true "wipe-out"!!

Oak getting grumpy is a good sign. It means we're getting to the meat of the season and he is ready to go to war.

Coach calling out Sudeikis and Wilde - Love it!

Stay for the whole game and sign some freaking autographs after. With that said, Sudeikis is still hilarious and Wilde is still hot.

At least they ate at Oklahoma Joe's earlier that day. Good choice.

Olivia Wilde > Ashley Judd so suck it Kentucky!

Nice opportunity to see so many bench minutes. Merv got a chance to display his shooting hand. Terrific pass from Young to Wesley, beneath the basket! And the one hand slam from T-Rob was super. Playing fewer minutes, Tyshawn played a very focused game, keeping his scoring and assist stats near season average, controlling turnovers. Thomas did not look happy last night. I hope the holiday season is going as well as possible for him. Good to read that one of the major NBA draftboards has him listed in the top six of the June draft. That opening lob to Withey was a terrific move to set the stage for enthusiastic play.

jhawk7782 1 year, 4 months ago

Okay..I'm repeating myself but Merv really impressed me w/his smooth release. Hope he gets to show it off again today.

Since Ben and Jamari are now allowed to practice, do they also get to suit up for the games and get to run through the pre-game shoot-arounds or are they relegagted to street clothes?

0

LAJayhawk 1 year, 4 months ago

Street clothes. And I don't believe they are allowed to travel with the team.

0

dylans 1 year, 4 months ago

affirmative on the no travel

jaybate 1 year, 4 months ago

Justin and Kevin are so important to this team becoming a dangerous team.

And this KSU game looming is going to be a huge challenge for them, because Martin is going to play smash mouth from the tip off. Neither guy realizes what full scale war is really about yet.

But they will very shortly.

Away all boats!

I'm calling my boat "The Hamilton".

0

jaybate 1 year, 4 months ago

If big water, then get a Radon, or Anderson (especially the hull George Greenough designed that they build) out of Santa Barbara. Once you do, you will never go back to the floating plastic crap that passes for hulls around the rest of the country (excepting good old Bertrams, Black Fins, and Tiaras/Pursuits.).

If rocks are an issue, forget anything plastic, and get a Boulton plate boat out of Oregon. Period. Boulton is now what all boats should be some day, unless some new super material better than.

Radon plastic.

Boulton aluminum plate.

All ye know and all ye need to know about power boats.

And beg, borrow or steal a Tohatsu diesel kicker outboard next time you are out of country.

And as long as I am opining on boat wet dreams, check out some of these new retractable inboard propeller drives. These things are insane!

Next.

A lot of people criticize Withey as being soft and not living up to his potential, but can anyone think of a guy his size with better hands? He is truly amazing at catching the ball -- basically he's the anti-Chenowith.

0

dylans 1 year, 4 months ago

When he sees the pass, and it's not a heater thrown from less than 5 feet away, Withey does have soft hands.

mikehawk 1 year, 4 months ago

Am I the only one who really liked how Merv (Swervin Mervin) Lindsay handled himself out there? I liked what I saw, regardless of the opponent. To me he acted like he knew what he was doing out there, and showed some sweet looking stroke. Wondering about his long term status. In fact, one of the most impressive things to watch was the deep end of the bench running the offense in a blow out. I think Coach is happier about last night than he let on in his post-game press conference. They looked relieved to out there against someone else other than against themselves in the long holiday practices and HCBS beatdowns.

0

LAJayhawk 1 year, 4 months ago

Rev. Jesse "The Body of James" Newell already selected his nickname. It is simply, "The Merv."

0

Jaylark 1 year, 4 months ago

I agree that Lindsay looks like he could be a factor in a year or two. I like his length and it appears that he has good quickness. Obviously, he can get up in the air and his shot looks pure.

The other thing is that he is obviously extremely young and undeveloped . I doubt whether he has to shave yet. With more time in the weight room, he could turn into something.

We may need him. It looks like next year's team may be on the big side but missing some guards and wings.

The real test will come when Kansas ST. comes to town.

0

jhawk7782 1 year, 4 months ago

If you look at our schedule, we play one of the hardest going by the various reporting agencies. So we have a two game tune-up before playing K-State. We also played, Georgetown, Duke, Ohio St, and Kentucky.

Find me a top team that doesn't have a few cupcakes on their schedule. For these teams, its a big payday and some national exposure.

win-win
