UK, Ohio State among KU’s 2011-12 hoops foes

An appearance in a star-studded Maui Invitational, a neutral-site game against Kentucky in New York and a home clash against Ohio State highlight Kansas University’s 2011-12 nonconference basketball schedule, which was released Sunday.

The Jayhawks will tangle with coach John Calipari’s Wildcats on Nov. 15 in Madison Square Garden in the inaugural Champions Classic doubleheader.

The Champions Classic is a three-year series involving powerhouse programs KU, UK, Duke and Michigan State. The Blue Devils and Spartans also will play Nov. 15 in the Garden.

In 2012, KU will play Michigan State, while UK plays Duke, at Atanta’s Georgia Dome. In 2013, KU will face Duke, and MSU will meet UK at Chicago’s United Center.

The Nov. 21-23 Maui field includes Duke, Georgetown, Memphis, UCLA, Tennessee, Michigan and Chaminade. Matchups will be announced this summer.

KU will meet Ohio State on Dec. 10 in Allen Fieldhouse. The Buckeyes went 34-3 last season and reached the NCAA Sweet 16 as a No. 1 seed. Jared Sullinger, a 6-foot-9 forward who would have been selected in the top five in the 2011 NBA Draft, has announced plans to return for his sophomore season.

KU will meet USC on Dec. 22 in Galen Center in Los Angeles. USC went 19-14 last year and lost in the first round of the NCAAs.

USC had looked into the possibility of playing KU in Wichita in the return game of the home-and-home series.

“It’s a situation in which a promoter probably asked them to do it, and they looked at it. We thought it wouldn’t happen, taking the game out of their building (in L.A.),” said KU senior associate AD Larry Keating, who is in charge of scheduling.

At home, KU will meet Towson (Nov. 11), Florida Atlantic (Nov. 30), South Florida (Dec. 3), Long Beach State (Dec. 6), Howard (Dec. 29) and North Dakota (Dec. 31). KU will play Davidson on Dec. 19 in Kansas City’s Sprint Center.

Florida Atlantic won the Sun Belt title last season and Long Beach State the Big West Conference. South Florida, 10-23 a year ago, is a member of the Big East. Last season, Davidson went 18-15 and advanced to the CBI Tournament quarterfinals.

“This is potentially the biggest-name schedule we’ve played since we’ve been here with the guarantee of playing Kentucky, Ohio State and USC,” KU coach Bill Self said Sunday. Ten of KU’s 13 non-conference foes advanced to the 2011 postseason. “Add to that the opportunity to play three of the biggest names in college basketball at the Maui Invitational. This will probably be as tough a nonconference schedule as we have played in a long time.

“It’s a tough schedule, one that will give us a ton of exposure, and with the young team we will have playing for us next year, it will be a great challenge. We need to be preparing now for next year.”

KU will open with exhibitions against Fort Hays State (Nov. 1) and Pittsburg State (Nov. 8). The Big 12 slate, to feature home-and-homes with every team in the league, will be released during the summer.

2011-12 Kansas Men’s Basketball Non-Conference Schedule

Nov. 1 (Tuesday), Fort Hays State, Lawrence (exhibition)

Nov. 8 (Tuesday), Pittsburg State, Lawrence (exhibition)

Nov. 21-23 (Monday-Wednesday), EA Sports Maui Invitational, Maui, Hawaii (potential opponents: Arizona, Chaminade, Duke, Georgetown, Memphis, Michigan, Tennessee, UCLA)

Nov. 30 (Wednesday), Florida Atlantic, Lawrence

Dec. 3 (Saturday), South Florida, Lawrence

Dec. 29 (Thursday), Howard, Lawrence

Dec. 31 (Saturday), North Dakota, Lawrence

What happened to the USC game being in Wichita?

Andrew Dunlap 10 years, 7 months ago

I agree. we need to face adversity as much as possible so we can draw on what we learned at tourney time. I don't give that much of a hoot about sparkling 20 game winnning streaks. we need to end the season with a 6 game winnning streak!

Kye Clark 10 years, 7 months ago

I disagree. Selfishly, being from Wichita I was really hoping that the game would be played here. However, we have tough enough opponents one more road game wasn't going to matter. You bring up the NCAA many of those are road games? Technically none, occasionally a few are tantamount to road games (i.e. the UCLA game in the '07 elite Anaheim I believe), but really it's very seldom KU is going to get that kind of draw. Also, USC is not the toughest road atmosphere anyway.

Mike Kendall 10 years, 7 months ago

316---Yes, I am with you. Would have loved to see the Jayhawks in Wichita. I am still excited about the schedule, though.

LAJayhawk 10 years, 7 months ago

I was at the Galen Center last time we played there (in 2008... one of several Chalmer's game-winning 3s that year...), and there were probably 2000 Jayhawk fans in attendance. One of the USC fans next to me commented about how many of us were there. I simply replied that our fans tend to travel well and alumni follow closely from across the country.

After the win the Rock Chalk Chant could be heard echoing through the hallways as people exited. The USC fans all had stunned looks on their faces. It was quite extraordinary.

If Boulder was Allen Fieldhouse West, then Galen Center may become Allen Fieldhouse Pacific Southwest.....

Jabez Harlan 10 years, 7 months ago

Try to understand that the more home games a team plays the more money they make. KU doesn't play so many games at home to protect its record. KU plays so many games at home to make money!

Plus, this strategy really did not start until Bill Self's tenure, even though he has very little to do with scheduling.

LAJayhawk 10 years, 7 months ago

His point, however, is that our games away from home are at neutral sites (MSG, Maui, Sprint Center) instead of true road games. It's a fair point, but I agree with ICT that tournament games are all essentially neutral sites anyway. I don't think "true road" is all that important as playing solid competition... which we are.

DXJhawk 10 years, 7 months ago

Should make for an interesting non-conference season.

Steve Jacob 10 years, 7 months ago

Should of played this schedule last season with a more experienced team.

Davidson at Sprint Center not too exciting they went 18-15, but did only have one senior and have a local kid (Clint Mann, Overland Park).

Jabez Harlan 10 years, 7 months ago

Maybe Curry could come back for one game?

JayhawkLifer 10 years, 7 months ago

It should be Michigan, not Arizona for the Maui Invitational.

JayhawkLifer 10 years, 7 months ago

Sorry, didn't see that Michigan was listed, but Arizona is not playing in the Maui Invitational.

Jabez Harlan 10 years, 7 months ago

I hope KU plays Duke and/or Georgetown at the Maui invite. We have played all of the other teams either last year or the year before (not counting Chaminade). I really hope KU does not play Chaminade. That won't help the SOS at all.

However, Ohio St and Kentucky? Yes!!! Finally some marquis matchups to really look forward to in the non conference!

My only concern is having a season like Mich St did last year and losing a bunch early. I would rather have a season like Mich St. did the year before where they came in as a 4 seed and went all the way to the final four after struggling in non con and conference seasons.

Evan Ridenour 10 years, 7 months ago

Yes and UK is scheduling such "Powers" as Marist (316) and Radford (327).

UK hasn't released their entire non-con schedule but I can guarantee it will be a lot easier then KU's. KU has a really tough non-con this coming season, it is going to be great.

Sam Constance 10 years, 7 months ago

You really are a tool. Stats in a vacuum are meaningless, and often used by people who have an agenda, rather than someone with an interest in illustrating reality. But you're just a "realistic KU fan, right"? So that doesn't apply to you... or something.

Sure, those are low ratings, but there are two problems with your logic:

1) Those ratings are based on LAST YEAR'S teams. Only a fool would believe that you can expect their ratings to be identical. For example, I have a suspicion that you would predict KU's rating next year to be lower than #3 (which is where they finished this year).

2) Your reasoning assumes that a good non-conference schedule cannot possibly have lower-rated schools. Unfortunately, a quick look at the rankings by non-con SOS reveals that to be a complete myth:

For starters, there are only four NCAA tourney teams who had single-digit seeds in the top 25 non-con SOS: Butler, Kentucky, West Virginia and North Carolina. So the common theme of highly-rated non-con SOS is that they are typically played by also-rans. Let's now look a little closer at the individual teams on some of those schedules:

Kentucky: 4-seed in the tourney and the #14 non-con SOS played the following teams in the non-conference:

108 East Tenn. St.

110 Portland

137 Oklahoma

171 Boston U.

184 Penn

229 Winthrop

255 Coppin St.

310 Miss. Valley St.

Averaging the 7 lowest (since I'm assuming the 7 you named on KU's 2011-12 schedule were their 7 lowest), that comes to an average rating of 199.4

North Carolina: 3-seed in the tourney and the #24 non-con SOS played the following teams in the non-conference:

99 Long Beach State

135 Hofstra

150 NC Asheville

158 Lipscomb

166 Evansville

206 William & Mary

282 St. Francis PA

Average rating: 170.9

So you can see right off the bat how cherry-picking 7 teams to illustrate a larger point about non-con SOS fails. The worst 7 teams from the #14 SOS average to a worse rating than the worst 7 teams from the #24 SOS.

And for the record, the average of the teams you listed on KU's 2011-12 schedule? 192.4... In other words, better than the #14 non-con SOS. Your point becomes somewhat flaccid if KU manages to finish in the top 15 for non-conference SOS for the 2011-12 season, as I have shown is clearly a possibility.

Thanks for playing the home version of You Don't Know Jack.

Kirk 10 years, 7 months ago

Smaller, weaker teams are inevitable on our schedule. They aren't the problem.

The real issue has been the lack of authentically strong opponents.

And the big xii sucks. We don't need to "prepare" for it. We need to prepare for the ncaa tournament by scheduling better teams than the ones found in today's big xii.

Sam Constance 10 years, 7 months ago

The Big 12 may not be the best conference in the land, but saying it "sucks" is so far removed from reality that it doesn't warrant a response.

Ethan Jones 10 years, 7 months ago

How are road games the best way to prepare for the NCAA Tournament? The whole tournament is played on neutral courts, that's why playing UK in NYC and the Maui Invitational are important. Those will provide better experience for the NCAA Tournament. Anyway, UConn won the Maui last year, clearly it can help to prepare a team a lot. Road games are important in the non-conference to help with preparation for the conference regular season, but KU seems to be pretty good at winning that regardless of our non-conference road games.

ku1otaku 10 years, 7 months ago

Thank you for stating the obvious. It's getting a little old hearing people say, "True road game prepare you for the tournament." The NCAA tourney is all about NEUTRAL sites.

MrWalleye2U 10 years, 7 months ago

We played the score more then the game. So it doesn't matter where we play, we got real lucky when Memphis missed their FT's and we hit a three to go into OT. We were 13-31 from the line against Cuse in 03. So if we would have made half of the one's we missed, would we have Bill Self coaching at KU?

Phoggin_Loud 10 years, 7 months ago

North Dakota Fighting Sioux. They are a hockey powerhouse.

I know most Kansan's don't appreciate college hockey, but they are a blast to watch. They pack 11,500 fans for every home game and have skating cheerleaders and a raucous band. It should be on everyone's "bucket-list".

This has absolutely nothing to do with KU hoops, except for UND's passion for their school and their sport...which is amazing.

UCONN had so many games against top 25 teams because the Big Least was overrated from the beginning and almost every team in the conference was rated in the top 25 at one point or another. The better test would be how many non-conference games against top 25 teams they played since teams have no control on conference games. UCONN went on a nice run at the end of the season and things fell their way. They were not the best team in the country by any means. Its all about who is hot at the time and a lot of luck to win the National Championship. If VCU shot like they did against Butler against KU, would have survived that game and probably played in the National Championship game.

That UNC loss should not be compared to the UNC they played at the End of the Season... Two Completely different teams. Barnes was against the Freshman wall, and Larry Drew was leaking turnovers like Calipari leaks hair gel.

IrishDaddy... I get it now.

You're from Irish Town in Lexington. A small pocket in Lexington where a fighter better be ready to fight while tying his shoes & a peacemaker better be ready to go to church & come out swinging after tripping on his own shoelaces.

I knew a guy some fifty years ago who grew up in Irish Town..... Had Knuckle prints in his forehead to go along with three teeth staring cockeyed up to God's mountains when he grinned.... His complexion put the ite in white. That's a tough place to grow up. Its safer to be locked up in your garage with the car running than fueling up at an Irish Town gas station. As my grandkids say.... "Big props". Explains your pro UK posts though. Doesn't really explain your neurotic compulsion to post underhanded comments on a daily basis on a Jayhawk website.

Well if it makes you feel much better, maybe you can be happy about the arena built just blocks from IrishTown is named after a Jayhawk. Rupp..... You're best coach by far, makes Calipari look like a three legged pole lassie.

That in itself should ease your concerns about us. Phog was coached by Naismith. And Rupp was coached by both Phog & Naismith....

On our campus.

So without the inventor bringing the game here, Rupp would have never started your tradition (30+ years after Naismith & Phog had our gyms rockin).

So go to church & enjoy the day. Go grab a couple eggs.

We respect you for growing up in IrishTown.

Now please.... For all that is right in this basketball Universe.... will you wipe that three toothed grin off your face & for the sake of Dr. Naismith's game, show Rupp some respect in your postings towards his Alma mater?

UK's freshmen got them as far as nowhere in 5years. Only one team wins it sorry.

Sam Constance 10 years, 7 months ago

1) Final Four is an early flame out. Or do you think the tourney ends with four teams?

2) Final Four really is sooooooo much better than the round before it. It's like the teams who made the Final Four won a whole extra game more than the Elite Eight teams.

Are you still going with the "I'm just a realistic Jayhawk fan line"? Your posts have become increasingly antagonistic. So if you really are a KU fan, you must also be a royal a**.

100 10 years, 7 months ago

I thought the only thing in Lexington that counted was championships. Not SEC ones either, Calipari made that quite clear. And Calipari, it appears isn't that concerned about NCAA championships either, even if your fanbase wants to appear to care about that. His biggest day was last year's draft, and in fact said it was "UK's biggest day in the history" of your program.

A recount: Last year we won several more games than you (we were predicted to be 5th in the big 12 by Dick Vitale). In the NCAA tournament, you guys won one more game in the NCAA tourney than us. Congratulations.

Can't wait. Hope we stick it to Calisleazy....maybe a 3-pointer to win the game???? (or tie it and win in overtime).

Chris Shaw 10 years, 7 months ago

Just some food for thought. Duke has never lost in the Maui Invitational. With a loaded Invitational I hope that streak comes to an end. Here are the all-time records.

Chris Shaw 10 years, 7 months ago

One would think that guys like DD and Lacey would jump all over this considering the schedule and the exposure they would get by playing at KU next year. Maui, MSG LA, Ohio State, and a ton of playing time available to showcase your talents should be a huge selling least one would think.

Tony Bandle 10 years, 7 months ago

kushaw..welcome back. Glad to hear from you.

Frankly, I'm not as optimistyic as the rest of you. I see losses against UK, Ohio State and possibly two in Hawaii, plus a tough road game in California.

A possible 7-5 record before the start of conference play, which will get harder due to the home/home schedule of 18 games. {Granted the recent defections from Texas just knocked them down a peg!!)

Actually. with all the new and yet unsettled roster spots for 2011-2012 maybe this won't be such a bad thing. Still, we Jayhawks may have to prepare for the type of rebuilding season we haven't seen in a long, long time.

Yogi was right though, you don't lose a game till you lose a game!!!!!

Chris Shaw 10 years, 7 months ago

Oakville: Yeah, I took a hiatus for a while. Still not over the VCU loss, quite frankly. I just got back from a cruise and to make things a little bit better I played poker against a VCU grad all week. He wasn't exactly the nicest with his comments all week once he saw my Jayhawk hat, but it did feel good taking a majority of his money throughout the week.

Kye Clark 10 years, 7 months ago

What are the odds that you run into a VCU grad on your cruise?!? Are you sure that was legit? Did you check his credentials and run a background check? I ask because this screams of some Fizzou troll...they have nothing to be proud of regarding their own school so they latch on to whoever happened to beat KU. Could have been a Misery grad that saw your Jayhawk hat and thought to himself "I can't tell him where I really went to school, he'll make fun of me all week...I know! I'll just claim to be a VCU grad. That should shut him up. Now, lemme google that and find out where their campus is located."

Anyway...welcome back, and congrats on winning some money.

Chris Shaw 10 years, 7 months ago

Considering most on the cruise were from Virginia, the Carolinas, or Florida I would bet it was legit. Plus, the VCU shirt he wore the second night to the poker table was a pretty good tell. LOL! Good stuff Icthawk.

Kye Clark 10 years, 7 months ago

I've said this before, but scheduling this tough is always a good thing. There will be some fans that take the point of view that with a young team you need to coddle them more so they can learn how to win, but I disagree. Even if we take our licks and stagger into the conference season with a 7-5 or 6-6 record, it is a good thing. Two examples: to start the '05-'06 season Self took a very young team to Maui (freshman Chalmers, Rush, Wright, & Micah Downs, sophomores Darnell, Sasha, RussRob, & CJ Giles) and got smoked...but the lessons learned served as the blueprint for an elite eight run the following year and the National Championship in '08. The second example is during the '08-'09 season Self took another young team into East Lansing and again got smoked, but it toughened the team up, we went to the sweet 16 and had a real shot at knocking off the same Spartan team, and it served as the blueprint for the following season (which should have ended better than it did). So I say bring on this type of schedule every year. Honestly we need it because the Big 12 simply has not prepared us for the NCAA tournament. Hopefully that will change with the addition of a couple of good coaches (sorry Fizzou, I'm not referring to Frank Haith here!), but I'm not holding my breath.

Also, does anybody think that IrishDaddy, pigballin, & theend are all the same loser?

Kye Clark 10 years, 7 months ago

Ohio State, Kentucky, and whoever we play in the Maui...that's a TOTAL of more than 2. Everyone but Chaminade (host school) in the Maui field made the tourney last year, so even if we end up having to play Chaminade, we're still guaranteed at least 2 more quality games. Also feel free to throw in the USC game, also a tournament team from a year ago. Even if you don't include them...guaranteed a TOTAL of at least 4 difficult opponents. Maybe you could take a break from trolling on our site and read the article and/or take a moment to familiarize yourself with the schedule. Isn't counting fun? Thanks for playing. Come again.

I am excited to play Kentucky next year. Really excited. T-Rob: here's something to take your mind off your recent alleged indiscretions.... "o. w. n. t. h. e. u. n. i. b. r. o, w."

It is distracting, and I don't care what kind of game Davis has, T-Rob won't be able to get past this. I can't. The best laid plans of mice and schedulers often go astray.

Self must have thought he was going to have The Twins and Josh back for this schedule.

At last, everyone gets to enjoy the experience of playing all the top programs a rebuilding year.

If Self finds a way to win 26 games next season, it will be his greatest coaching job at KU. Better than '08. Better than Coles first season starting. Better than this past season. If Self wins 26 games next season, I will personally award him the Anne Sullivan Miracle Worker Award!

Now, I'm off for 3 weeks of R&R.

Try not to let the trolls get away with much, while I am gone.

Wow Ohio St. at Lawrence will be really tough with Sullinger coming back. Have a chance to play Duke I hope we do. As for Kentucky, how can you be a fan? Kids stay no longer than a year if they don't get it done in that year, I guess you can watch them in the nba. How could you feel good as a fan knowing that your coach is the sleeziest in the business. It was not long ago when getting a number one recruit actually meant something before this terrible rule. How do nba teams recruit these kids on potential alone is beyond me, but hey it isn't my money!!! Top recruits meant something before this rule I could really care less about them now... We have had two number ones or one and dones or whatever you want to call them. I have already forgot them.

Steve Gantz 10 years, 7 months ago

An interesting point of comparison. My senior year, 1988 my memory is a pretty tough n non-conf-schedule. Here it is: Chaminade, Iowa, Illinois all at Maui, Pomona Pitzer, Appalachian St., Rider, American all at home, Western Carolina on the road. Now listen to the major conference teams: St. Johns home, and at St. Johns (St. Johns was still a strong program) At NC State (also a strong program then with Coach V), Memphis at Madison Square Garden, at Washington, at Notre Dame, Duke at home.
They played 6 gimme type games, with one on the road, one at a neutral court. They played 5 true road games. They brought in one major team at home. 4 neutral court games. Sound tough? It was, but the team won the whole thing, no doubt attributable to the tough schedule.

The '11-12 schedule is an improvement over last year, but it seems Self is afraid to take his team on the road. Maybe coach Brown should give him a few scheduling tips.

actorman 10 years, 7 months ago

ict, I agree with your comments about playing games at neutral sites. One quibble: the Elite 8 game against UCLA in '07 was in San Jose, not Anaheim. I should know since I was there.

Wissox, you make good points about the schedule in '88 being tougher, but I don't think it has anything to do with Self being afraid to go on the road. In fact, I would bet that if you check any major program's schedules from the last few years, they would look similar. I think television is a big factor, as a lot of games that used to be home-and-home are now being played at neutral sites due to television setting them up. Also, because budgets are so gigantic compared to what they used to be, the major teams want as many home games as possible. So if all the major teams are trying to play 75-80% of their non-con games at home, and then you throw in some big games being dictated by television to be at neutral sites, that doesn't leave much opportunity to have big games on the road.

Steve Gantz 10 years, 7 months ago

You're right, maybe it's more of a lament. I generally hate the non conference portion of the season because the few good opponents are separated by 3 lesser opponents.
On the other hand, looking at Texas' season, I see them going to North Carolina, Michigan St., and USC hosting UConn, and playing in a neutral site Illinois and Pittsburgh. Didn't really help them in March I guess you could say, or even down the stretch when they handed us the Big 12 title, but it appears that Barnes makes a concerted effort to play a tough non-con schedule.
And you're right about the budgets, but if a team is scheduling based on the budget rather on what's best for the team, that's a problem imho.

hawkmaster 10 years, 7 months ago

Duh - where are these people's heads at? KU didn't get beat by VCU in the tourney because they didn't play more road games during the season. If you use that argument then KU should have been 1 and done in the tourney because they played their first (and all tourney games) on the road! You can't conclude KU lost the 4th game of the tourney all of a sudden due to inexperience on the road. Besides, its a neutral court, although it clearly had more KU fans! KU got beat because our guards couldn't hit the broad side of a barn, and we couldn't defend the 3-pointer very well, just please admit it and move on, no more excuses. There is absolutely no national statistic that shows a causal relationship that if you play more games on the road, then you have a better chance of winning the NCAA tourney. But there is clearly a causal relationship which shows if you shoot a lousy % and don't guard, you usually don't win many games - - especially in the tourney!

If there isn't a casual relationship... could there be a serious one?

Steve Gantz 10 years, 7 months ago

He said "causal" relationship, changes the meaning quite a bit.

Wow hawkmaster! Valid points, every one of them. But you are skating on some seriously thin ice being objective and sensible on this site. These folks don't want to hear it. Just tell them that as long as the players put on their KANSAS jerseys they deserve to win. Any tournament loss is acceptable though, because, well golly gee - at least we GOT to the tournament, and that is reward enough for all their hard work during the regular season. The rest of us inconsiderate fans should not be upset when we get beat by 9, 11, 13 or 14 seeds - our expectations are unreasonably high.

LJ Gee 10 years, 7 months ago

Dude, we are going to have a TOUGH schedule next year. Its going to be really really difficult to win 30 games and get a 1 seed again this year but if we get DD and Lacey, we'll be in a much better position to do so. I'll be honest, Im a little nervous about having such a tough schedule in a year with such high turnover, but Im also really excited. RCJH

Steve Gantz 10 years, 7 months ago

Anyone find it interesting the UNC was left out of the "Champions Classic"? I did!

Dee Shaw 10 years, 7 months ago

After looking at this schedule it irritates me that the Morris Boys and Selby have left for greener pastures. I understand why but man what match ups that could have been. Kentucky vs KU in NY at Madison Square Garden. Kentuckey will be a pre season top 5 team. #1 Recruiting class coming in. Ranked 1 and 2 in the most wins amongst Div 1 college basketball programs. Ohio St. The title game everyone wanted to see in the 2011 tournament. Sullinger against the Morris Boys. Talking about some body contact. That would have been fun to watch. Just sucks to think we will never know how those games would have come out.

theend 10 years, 7 months ago

Well.....there's at least 2 losses.......seeing that Kansas can't compete on a national level.

I bet KU wouldn't even make it to the Final 4 in the women's tournament.....probably lose in the 2nd round to Western East by Northeast Illinois State A & M.

Sam Constance 10 years, 7 months ago

So, are you, like IrishDaddy, still pretending to be a KU fan who's just "realistic"? Because this would be a pretty odd comment for a KU fan... even a "realistic" one.

I feel a bit duped for responding to you candidly on that other thread several days ago. Turns out you're just another troll who poses as a KU fan.

theend 10 years, 7 months ago

Awe.....marchphog.....don't take your ball and go home!!! It's gonna be ok!!

Sam Constance 10 years, 7 months ago

Not going anywhere. Perhaps you simply have a learning disability--I would like you to go away.

And you didn't answer the question. Typical troll behavior.

theend 10 years, 7 months ago

I wouldn't want you to go......I admire your support of KU. I will shut up about it soon.....even I'm getting annoyed by my comments.

Steve Gantz 10 years, 7 months ago

WENIS A & M is a Division II school, so we couldn't play them :)

Greg Lux 10 years, 7 months ago

The reason we don't go on the road more is one word .. " MONEY"

woodscolt 10 years, 7 months ago

This probably won't be self's best team to put up against the toughest schedule of his tenure. Maybe they will be hungry enough to be very competitive. Less talent, more chemistry. We will have to see how recruiting plays out, but Kentucky's freshman, being more of the one and done variety, seem to have more impact. Self's freshman tend to be pretty good as frosh but really good as juniors. They tend to stay around long enough to develop into very good players. No better example than the twins. T Rob might be a Danny Manning type player next year as well. I can see this team losing 7 or 8 games before they really develop into a very good team around NCAA tourney time. Will be interesting. I would rather lose to a kentucky or Ohio State than VCU or Northern Iowa.

Tough travel schedule when looking at a game in NYC on Nov. 15 and then a game in Hawaii on Nov. 21st!

Kevin Huffman 10 years, 7 months ago

Well, they play ALL teams home and there's likely 4-6 gms. against ranked teams just in conference...figure Texas is likely top 3, A&M will be ranked and likely another team will at least be ranked at some pt.

Throw in UK, OSU & likely 2 in Maui and you're probably talking about somewhere around 8 - 9 gms. against top 25 teams.

HawkKlaw 10 years, 7 months ago

Looks like KU will be tested early next season...I like it! I'd rather be upset in the non-conference than in March.

SaulGood 10 years, 7 months ago

Yes, yes yes. Awesome. I've been begging for this for years, and now we get it. I can't wait to see a KU team gel before the postseason for once by getting tried in the fire.

Bring it!

Kirk 10 years, 7 months ago

It's great to see us playing some seriously good teams for a change. The big xii simply isn't strong enough anymore to sufficiently prep KU for the big dance.

Kansas will be lucky to beat Iowa State once this next season, much less twice.

First chance he gets, HCBS will substitute The Little Sisters of the Poor for the Ohio State game.

Kansas will be the last team invited to the NCAA and lose it's first round play-in game.

The UK One and Dones will beat the KU None Get It Dones by 100 points.

Jeff Withey will become the Designated Whipping Boy for 2011-2012.

OH MY GOD!!! I just woke up from a horrible nightmare.

I dreamed I was theend!!!

theend 10 years, 7 months ago

Very Funny! I have to admit that does sound a bit like me.

KU will be good(again) next year......but I just wish they would be more competitive in March.....that's all. Don't woory.....I'm going to shut up about it pretty soon. Even I'm getting tired of it.

Tony Bandle 10 years, 7 months ago

All kidding aside, I know you care about Kansas BBall and our very own brand of March Madness is indeed just that...maddening. Maybe we need to be the underdogs for awhile and play...dare I say a wildly go-for-broke mid-major!!! :)

jayhawKUr 10 years, 7 months ago

Glad to see the Jayhawks back on the Left Coast - will be at the USC game in Crimson & Blue!

Steve Gantz 10 years, 7 months ago

Fascism rules on KUSports. Don't say anything bad about the Jayhawks. When you do you'll get jumped on by a few people here, the KUSports thought police, the Jaystapo, and without the constitutional right to a fair trial, they'll pronounce you guilty of being a KSU, MU or a Kentucky fan.

Most here are not guilty, allowing others to anonymously write the stupidest or inane comments without lumping them in with those despicable subhuman groups I mentioned.

The ones who are guilty, tone it down please.

Steve Gantz 10 years, 7 months ago

I was speaking in general terms, I realize you can say unpopular things and not get immediately blacklisted. My only defense of theend is I've seen him vigorously defend his fandom with the Jayhawks. Irishdaddy, never heard of him until a couple of days ago, and he claims to be a Jayhawk fan too.
Now I kind of miss KYCats or whatever his name was. He was obviously here to invite everyone's wrath, and ya'll obliged him! I think we all can't wait, although it's a long wait, for next season, then we can talk about real games!

Looks like a tough schedule. Apparently, some view incessant criticism of every facet of KUs program; the league, the coach, the schedule, the recruiting, the lineage of the players, the color of the uniforms; as essential to the success of our program. Others (e.g., theend, IrishDaddy) have no interest in our program and visit here hoping the affiliation will improve the quality of their lives. KU sports, especially hoops, will outlive me. I'm thankful for the consistent quality of our program. I'm glad trolls and critics can find some satisfaction here. You certainly entertain me.

Ludwig Supraphonic 10 years, 7 months ago

Thank you for the interest you have expressed in the KU program. Your enthusiasm is obvious and I'm certain your charm and wit will put you in good stead somewhere. Any KU student athlete would be envious of your warmth and zest for life!

I don't mean to violate any rules here......I apologize in advance if this is inappropriate. I do NOT want to spam, but can the knowledgeable ones here direct me to where I can post ads for accommodations (I have them and would like to rent them out) during the Maui Invitational. I thought I'd be able to go, but I can't. I can post details on a proper site/bulletin-board/forum, in order to get the attention of maximum number of 'hawks fans. Craigslist does not allow posting the same ad in multiple cities!

I will understand if the board monitors remove this post as inappropriate........I think it's marginally acceptable. Thanks

Rebuilding Year at KU: Regular Season: 22-9 Wins over Mizzery twice. Slaughter of UK.
2nd round Big 12 tourney loss.

5 seed, medium/low expectations

Get hot, play as underdog for once... Final 4!!

True..but the Big East was a Big Disappointment in the tourney w/the exception of UConn. 11 teams in but 9 teams exit the NCAA tournament before the Sweet 16. 2010 record was 8-8. Don't be fooled by East Coast bias.

Global, I get as irritated with IrishDaddy as anyone, but using ethnic slurs is DEFINITELY not the way to respond! In fact, I would suggest that it puts you several steps BELOW IrishDaddy on the scumbag scale.

Michael Bratisax 10 years, 7 months ago are saying exactly what I have been. When you schedule nationally known programs and you play them in an off one is to blame. We might be the team (hope not) that is not playing as well as in most years. You guys probably know that if we were all in a bar watching an away game, we would most likely leave as friends.

Michael Bratisax 10 years, 7 months ago

Did not know Sullinger decided to stay for a 2nd year...I don't know anything about his financial situation but that says something about the guys character...imo Got to be hard to wait another year for the BIG money. Don't know if I could do it.
