KU scoring — Marcus Morris 18, Reed 15, Collins 12, Aldrich 10, Markieff Morris 7, X. Henry 4, Taylor 3, Morningstar 3.

KU was 23-for-52 from the floor (44.2 percent), 2-for-8 from three (25 percent) and 24-for-31 from the free-throw line (77.4 percent).

KSU was 24-for-69 from the floor (34.8 percent), 8-for-22 from three (36.4 percent) and 8-for-14 from the free-throw line (57.1 percent).

KU out-rebounded KSU, 41-37. KU had 11 turnovers to KSU’s five.

FINAL: KU defeats KSU, 72-64

Horrible sequence for Collins, who loses control of a shot then fouls Pullen. Self grabs his forehead. KSU will have a chance to score with no time running off the clock.

Pullen misses the front end of the one-and-one, though, and Aldrich pulls down the board.

Reed is fouled, but he misses both free throws. Clemente flies down the court for a layup to cut KU’s lead to six.

Marcus Morris steps to the line with 35.5 seconds left, and he makes the first free throw. He misses the second, and Aldrich goes over the back for the quick whistle. That’s his fifth foul and will give KSU more chances at points with the clock stopped. The Jayhawks haven’t played smart down the stretch in this one.

Kelly misses the front end of the one-and-one, but KSU gets the rebound. Clemente fires up a high-arcing three, but it bounds hard off the back iron. Markieff skies to bring down the rebound, and he’s fouled immediately.

Markieff makes a free throw, and after a missed Pullen three, Collins grabs the rebound and runs out the clock.

KU wins the Big 12 tournament championship with a 72-64 victory over KSU.

KU 70/KSU 62 — 1:03 left in game

Curtis Kelly has a shot blocked by Aldrich, but a foul call comes from the backside official. “That’s not your call!” Self screams across the court.

KU beats the KSU full-court press, and Collins catches the ball at full speed. He takes the ball to the rim, ducks under a defender, and finishes with a layup on the other side of the rim.

Kelly is fouled again, this time by Markieff. KU would be better off letting Kelly take whatever hook shot he wants to take inside. The KSU forward makes both free throws.

Reed misses a floater in the lane, and in transition, Samuels is left wide open for a three. All the KU fans gasp at the same time. The attempt is short, though, and a hustling Marcus Morris throws his body into the lane for the defensive rebound.

On the other end, Reed feeds Marcus Morris with a low bounce pass, and Marcus fades to his back shoulder for a tough turnaround off the glass. That’s a big change of momentum there.

Pullen loses control of a shot inside, and KU comes away with the board. With his team leading by eight with 1:03 left, Self calls timeout.

KU 66/KSU 58 — 3:16 left in game

Markieff Morris with an errant pass, and KU is whistled for a backcourt violation. The Jayhawks would have had an opportunity to go up either 10 or 11 on that possession.

Pullen is starting to take over for KU, though. He uses a slick crossover move on the baseline to clear space before putting in a 16-footer over Aldrich, then follows the next possession with a three.

Collins pushes the ball off the make, finding Reed in the corner. The shot misses, but Clemente with a big mistake, as he fouls Reed to give him three free throws. Reed makes all of them. He really seems to save his best games for KSU and Missouri.

Pullen drives and draws a foul. His free throws give him seven straight KSU points since the media timeout.

KU is matching KSU blow for blow on the offensive end, though. After breaking the press, Xavier Henry is fed a pass on a baseline cut, and he makes two free throws after getting fouled. Let’s not overlook KU’s 19-for-22 shooting (86.4 percent) from the free-throw line.

Aldrich comes down with a KSU miss, and Collins delivers an NBA move on the other end, spinning in the lane before throwing in an eight-foot floater. Martin calls timeout, as the Jayhawks are up double digits for the first time today.

After the break, Collins comes away with a steal, and he fires ahead to Reed for a layup. KU’s fans rise to their feet.

Samuels is keeping KSU within striking distance. He hits two consecutive three-pointers, and those are huge shots for the Wildcats.

KU 53/KSU 45 — 7:48 left in game

Morningstar once again comes up with a composed play for KU, keeping his dribble alive until a KSU defender stops him. No one does, so Morningstar takes it all the way to the rim for a layup that is goaltended.

KSU cuts it to four, but Reed answers with a three from the wing. KU has done a good job of keeping K-State from making a big run.

Marcus Morris makes one of two free throws, and KU has pushed its lead back to eight.

KU 45/KSU 41 — 11:26 left in game

The pace has picked up, and so has the scoring.

Pullen puts in a floater. Markieff grabs an offensive rebound and puts in the stickback. Markieff follows with two more free throws.

Xavier Henry comes up with a block, and it starts the break for KU. Taylor puts in a free throw with a foul, and KU has grabbed some momentum.

It doesn’t last long. Jamar Samuels buries a three, and Clemente grabs a steal, gliding his way across the basket for a layup. Self calls timeout with KU’s lead down to two.

The Jayhawks execute perfectly out of the break, as Morningstar lobs to Marcus Morris for an alley-oop layup.

Morningstar comes up with the play offensively the next time down for KU, as he dribbles under the basket to find Aldrich for a dunk with a foul. Aldrich screams out his satisfaction, while Morningstar — with no emotion — walks toward the backcourt. Collins screams at Morningstar to congratulate him, making him at least offer a chest-bump to celebrate.

Clemente answers for KSU. He tries to draw a foul on a three-point attempt, contorting his body toward the defender on his shot. Reed doesn’t touch Clemente, but the off-balanced, circus shot still goes through. Unlucky break for the Jayhawks.

KU 35/KSU 28 — 15:56 left in game

KU is hitting the offensive glass more aggressively in the second half, as Marcus Morris and Aldrich both get their hands on rebounds.

Unfortunately for KU, that aggressiveness isn’t translating to the defensive boards. KU misses a box-out twice, though it doesn’t end up costing the Jayhawks, as Sutton misses a pair of free throws.

Marcus Morris uses a nice baseline move to get to the rim for a layup, then on the next possession, shoots in a baseline jumper over a defender. KSU calls timeout, as KU has its largest lead at eight.

Another three-second-in-the-lane call on KU. The Jayhawks have to be the nation’s leader in that call.

Higgins isn’t making any friends on the KU bench. He calls Marcus Morris for a charge on a move toward the basket. Self starts screaming at Higgins, and so do the KU fans.

KU scoring — Marcus Morris 8, Collins 8, Reed 5, Aldrich 5, Markieff Morris 2, X. Henry 2, Morningstar 1.

KU was 11-for-29 from the floor (37.9 percent), 1-for-3 from three-point range (33.3 percent) and 8-for-10 from the free-throw line (80 percent).

KSU was 12-for-38 from the floor (31.6 percent), 3-for-10 from three (30 percent) and 0-for-0 at the free-throw line.

KU had four turnovers, while KSU had three. KSU had 23 first-half rebounds, while KU had 22.

Halftime thoughts

No free throws for the Wildcats? This is a team averaging nearly 31 free throws per game. Great job by the Jayhawks in that regard.

KU’s perimeter defenders also have played well so far. Jacob Pullen is just 1-for-7 for two points, while Denis Clemente is 3-for-9.

No Jayhawk had more than four first-half rebounds. Aldrich had just three, and he needs to be better inside grabbing those loose caroms. We’ve seen him be dominant in the paint against the Wildcats earlier this season, but we have yet to see that today.

KU 31/KSU 27 — Halftime

Not a smart play by Aldrich, who barrels into the lane with a drive before trying to kick it out. The big man knocks over a Wildcat, and officials make the easy charge call. That’s two fouls on Aldrich, and those are the type of whistles your big men have to avoid.

Thomas Robinson tries to do too much offensively, putting up two consecutive shots in the lane that are rejected. Self looks frustrated.

Once again, KU pulls off perfect execution of a two-for-one at the end of the half. Collins drives around a screen, putting in a quick layup with 45 seconds left on the clock. KU will have the last possession.

Robinson doesn’t step out far enough on a screen, and Clemente hits the open three. Poor help defense there by the Jayhawks.

Collins is fouled on a drive, and he makes both free throws. Self checks in Conner Teahan for Robinson to avoid a potential foul.

Rodney McGruder puts in a stickback at the halftime buzzer. The officials originally count it, but after looking at the replay, they make the correct call and wave the basket off.

KU takes a four-point lead into the break.

KU 27/KSU 22 — 3:18 left in 1st half

Sutton gets the ball inside, but he hesitates before taking the shot. Though Cole Aldrich isn’t in the game, I swear Sutton was looking to see where KU’s big man was.

Pullen misses a shot, but Sutton sticks the rebound back in for two. KU had two guys trying to block Pullen’s shot but no one staying home to rebound. Sutton grabs his shoulder after making the layup.

Collins grabs a loose ball, and he finishes among the big men for two.

Self goes back to the Triangle-and-Two defense that has been effective against KSU earlier this year. The big key for KU is rebounding well out of the set defense.

Collins dumps inside to Aldrich, and he rolls a short shot in over a defender.

Aldrich makes a lazy pass that is tipped out of bounds by K-State. Self nearly screams, but he pins his lips together and fights the urge.

KU 19/KSU 16 — 7:49 left in 1st half

Xavier Henry has a shot blocked, but Marcus Morris comes through with a ridiculously athletic play, catching the ball and hurling it towards the rim. The ball banks off the glass and goes through.

Collins draws a foul, and Martin marches over to grab his water bottle. Looks like he’s about a split second from chucking it towards the bench before regaining his cool.

Taylor misses a tough shot, but Marcus Morris is there for the stickback. Might not be a bad strategy for KU’s guards to take most of the shots with KU’s big men working on getting rebounding position inside.

Collins with a long alley-oop pass, and Xavier Henry slams it down. KU’s offense looked much better during that four-minute stretch between media timeouts.

KU 11/KSU 11 — 11:23 left in 1st half

Two blocks from KU (one from Marcus Morris, one from Tyshawn Taylor) extend KSU’s field-goal drought. The Wildcats start 0-for-11 before Wally Judge finally puts in a tip-in at the 14:43 mark.

KSU is being extremely physical defensively. KU is having trouble making any passes, much less running its sets.

Markieff Morris makes a tough baseline shot. KU might have to rely on jump shots if it can’t figure out a better way to attack KSU’s overpursuing defense.

Morningstar picks Clemente’s pocket, and he draws a blocking foul on his shot attempt. Clemente doesn’t like it, and he waves his hand in the air toward the official. The KSU senior is lucky to have avoided a technical foul for his show of frustration.

Clemente hides behind a screen and buries a deep three. Nothing complicated about that play.

Tyrel Reed answers with a guarded three of his own on the other end, getting a friendly roll off the rim and backboard. It looks like KU has the friendly rim (and KSU has the unfriendly rim) in the first half.

KU 5/KSU 0 — 15:52 left in 1st half

Eric Sorrentino notes something interesting early: KSU has 6-foor-5 Dominique Sutton guarding KU’s Sherron Collins. That means Denis Clemente is guarding the much bigger Xavier Henry. Interesting decision by KSU coach Frank Martin. I would guess he's trying to make it tougher for Collins to score over length.

The biggest mismatch for KU offensively is still Cole Aldrich against Luis Colon. KU’s first three points come from Aldrich, as he’s fouled inside and also puts in a short baseline shot.

KSU can’t get anything to go down. Even the short shots are missing.

Jacob Pullen misses a three, and Martin is furious. “Pass the (bleepity-bleep) ball,” Martin yells across the court to Pullen.

KSU has started out 0-for-8 from the floor.

5:13 p.m.

Though I was expecting the crowd noise to be about equal, the KU fans have been much louder in the pregame festivities.

Will the KU fans keep their noise level up during the game? That doesn't always happen in Kansas City for some reason.

4:48 p.m.

You still have time to check out the Cram Session. I just posted it on the left side of this page.

4:24 p.m.

Welcome back to the Newell Post Live, coming to you live from Sprint Center in Kansas City, Mo., where the No. 1 Kansas Jayhawks are getting set to take on the No. 9 Kansas State Wildcats.

There are so many storylines in this one. Jacob Pullen vs. Sherron Collins. Kansas State trying to win its first Big 12 basketball championship. KU trying to finish off a sweep of the season series.

We know this for sure: The game will be physical and most likely will involve a lot of fouls (especially because KU has drawn John Higgins as an official for a second straight game).

The Jayhawks were able to avoid fouling against Texas A&M; on Friday, and they need to do the same against Kansas State today.

I'll go with KU in this one, but I expect a close game. Give me KU by two (Let's go 75-73). Though KU might have more fans here today, I'm expecting the noise level to be fairly even, as K-State fans have been extremely loud throughout this tournament.

Be sure to vote in the poll at the left and use the hashtag #kubball to have your Tweets appear on the left side of this page. KUsports.com Big 12 blogger Eric Sorrentino is sitting next to me, and he'll be Tweeting there under the name Big12_Spotlight. Be sure to join in the conversation with him.

Just checked, 13:00 left in a tight ACC game. Will they delay the start of the KU game? I doubt it.

I've been nervous all day. But, as I sit here waiting for the game to start, a surprisingly calm feeling has come over me. At this point, I am feeling pretty good.

Don't look now, but tonight will make 14 out of 14 Big XII Men's Hoops Tournaments won by (former) Big 8 teams.

Chad Hallack 9 years, 11 months ago

The ACC game shouldn't play a factor unless there's overtime... I think tip is actually slated for 5:15. Rock Chalk!!!

Chad Hallack 9 years, 11 months ago

75-63 'Hawks or 78-65... is that cheating!?

dynamitehawk 9 years, 11 months ago

YES!!! Even if we are up by 25, I call for HCBS to start fouling with 10 minutes remaining.

Jesse Newell 9 years, 11 months ago

BigDaddy — Didn't forget. We've just been spending a lot of time at the K.C. Power and Light District at our booth with fans. Have been getting in a little later because of it. Sorry about that.

Michael Wattai 9 years, 11 months ago

uh-oh - it seems like every time keegan doesn't show up for the "gameday cram session" KU loses.

Jim Dickerson 9 years, 11 months ago

jesse---- isn't this game for the Big12 "tournament" championship? I thought we had already won the Big 12 (league) championship. And BTW, I really enjoy your commentary. Keep up the good work.

dynamitehawk 9 years, 11 months ago

In fact, in honor of Jay Wright... save all timeouts and fouls until the last 10 minutes.

trueblue9 9 years, 11 months ago

This ACC game is proof that the tournament doesn't need to expand to 96 teams.

Jesse Newell 9 years, 11 months ago

jesse — Thanks for the kind words. You are right about it being the tournament championship. Then again, K-State hasn't ever won either the Big 12 regular-season or tournament championship, so saying this would be its first "championship" I guess technically wouldn't be wrong, either.

dynamitehawk 9 years, 11 months ago

So, jnewell - You had a post deleted (Yes, I've had both posts and dynomitehawk deleted), but what did you do dawg?

trueblue9 9 years, 11 months ago

I'll take the cover and under. KU 75-69

Joe Studebaker 9 years, 11 months ago

This is great exposure for both Kansas teams! I was out shopping here in Topeka and you see lots of ku and Ksuck apparel. I'm proud of our state and Texas teams can sit back and watch!! RCJH!!! Let's go Hawks come out of the Gates swinging!!!

Steve Gantz 9 years, 11 months ago

Any tips on making this page automatically refresh with new comments?

Joe Studebaker 9 years, 11 months ago

just hit f5 and it will refresh and go back to where you were prior to hitting f5. Works great to catch up on where you left off reading the posts!

Jesse Newell 9 years, 11 months ago

dynamite — I actually did a test comment, just to see if it would work. Then I deleted my own comment. Interesting that you noticed it.

Jim Dickerson 9 years, 11 months ago

jesse--- I accept your explanation, OMG that makes coach Martin technically right also.

BCRavenJHawkfan 9 years, 11 months ago

trueblue9: And proof the ACC and Big East need to go to a 24 second shot clock, 4 times outs, and at 10 team fouls in the 2nd half, players start to get disqualified just as if they had 5 personal fouls.

Joe Studebaker 9 years, 11 months ago

what's your pick on the ACC game NC State or Ga Tech? I'm picking NC State.... 4min to go 44-46 NC.

dynamitehawk 9 years, 11 months ago

Ahhh. OK. I was really just trying to figure out the Ben avatar, but then saw a deleted post, which made me wonder. :)

Jesse Newell 9 years, 11 months ago

This is a good time to bring this up when talking about the comments. We're going to roll out a very BETA version of a new supplement to our live game blog for the NCAA Tournament next week. I've tried it out, and there's some super-cool stuff you can do with it. I'd invite you all to give it a try during the game next week. I'll still be doing my normal live-blogging here, but there will be a link to our new application on the front page.

trueblue9 9 years, 11 months ago

I'll take GT, just the superior team. Plus their coach isn't dressed like a candy striper. Notice Tubby doing this today too (maroon suit). So happy BS is not on this trend, just a blue tie, classy.

dynamitehawk 9 years, 11 months ago

I think you guys need better, or more specific ax comments, like "jnewell says hell no! get that skanky stuff outta here, dawg"

Joe Studebaker 9 years, 11 months ago

Jesse... about three weeks ago I was watching the KU game on Jasontv and I like the live chat window rather than the posting like we have it here... Not sure if that is a possibility or your beta version has something like this to offer but I think that type of chat is more "interactive". But, I'm open to whatever you have coming to us. BTW Jesse, where is your lucky seat at during the game? Do you get to sit front row court side or not?

Kent Wells 9 years, 11 months ago

Not really, Jesse. That Dynomite is quite the stalker.

How, do tell, do you et your screenname censured?!? Jimmy Walker complain?

"Some Ways You Know KU and KSU Are Playing:"

The Fan Hate Meter at Frazier Hall, part of on-going MK-Ultra mind control research project run by a KU professor nicknamed Dr. No by Chancellor Bernadette Grey-Little at a university "development" party, records KU fan's hatred for MU ticking down briefly from Infinite to just short of Infinite, because of momentarily divided focus on the KU-KSU game.

Department of Homeland Security designates Sprint Center for possible outbreak of civil insurrection and repositions People's Republic of China brigade stationed at old Kelly Airforce Base in Texas from its deployment south of the Mexican border to old Richards Gebaur AFB and new port of entry for USA bound China White.

The Transportation Safety Administration sets up metal detectors at doorways to both team's locker rooms in Sprint Center and sends TSA staff to search cheerleaders' sports bras for thermite.

ESPN runs an "R--Not Approved for Children Under 17 without Parent or Guardian" chiron before switching to the KU-KSU game ten minutes in.

Students from each school "borrow" cars from each other's campuses and stage a demoliton derby on I-70 bridge over Missouri River.

KSU students accept a challenge by KU students to a nude speed skating race on the Kaw River, with KSU students to start in Manhattan and KU students to start in Lawrence and with the winner of the race to get $1 Million for being the first to reach Kansas City. Fully clothed KU students laugh hysterically and toast repeatedly at The Wheel as KSU students are shown on TV jumping naked into the Kaw with skates on and discovering there is no ice. When TV reporters ask them why they would accept a challenge to such a race when Manhattan is more than two times farther from Kansas City than Lawrence, the nude KSU students say, "It is?"

Helen and Bill's Area 51 Alien Casino announces odds for KU beating KSU at 1-2, except in a inverted anti-matter universe where KU still wins, but the odds are only 1-1.

Note: All fiction, no fact.

Rock Chalk!

Stude — That's more of where I'd like to take it — into more a chat instead of a me-post-up-here, you-comment-down-here sort of thing. Our tech guys have been working hard on the technology and should be able to roll out the full version by football season next year. They've done a great job so far, and there's some cool stuff you can do to the comments that you've never been able to do before (post videos, pictures, etc.). If all goes as planned, my hope is that we have a fan experience on this site that can't be duplicated anywhere else on the Internet.

Steve Gantz 9 years, 11 months ago

We're going to miss the start of yet another game.

Steve Gantz 9 years, 11 months ago

Georgia tech needs to wear tear away jerseys

jaybate 9 years, 11 months ago

jnewell,

Check with the tech guys and see if we can have fan cams that are live feeds of each of the board rats at their computers that appear in the avatars by each of their posts. Of course, some sort of dress code will be required. :-)

Actually, I happen to know that what I am suggesting is quite do-able technically, so I'm only half joking.

The future of this medium is effectively unlimited.

Anyone know what Frank Martin's 3 pieces of flair are?

I guess that's fine if he wants to get by with the bare minimum. But doesn't he want to express himself?

I see it as a close game until the second half when we make one of our spirited runs to pull away. I just don't think we can be beat when all our Hawks' are playing at such a high level. That block by Taylor was Lebron-status. Absolutely unbelievable.

Dan Harris 9 years, 11 months ago

Different mentality by Kansas and Kstate. If we are down by ten we know we are still in the game. Put Kstate down by ten and they are in desperate measures. I like our mentality!!

Chad Hallack 9 years, 11 months ago

Collins!!!! Great play, way to stay with it!

Theutus 9 years, 11 months ago

That was just a lazy dumb foul by Taylor.

how many 5' or less shots can this team miss?

dynamitehawk 9 years, 11 months ago

Wells -

P.S. On my previous posts - you're my boy, blue.

Theutus 9 years, 11 months ago

This is really a great game. Outside of a few mistakes (which are unavoidable in a game) we've actually come out playing with energy and fight.

This is quality basketball by both teams.... Nobody is giving anything up easily.

BCRavenJHawkfan 9 years, 11 months ago

K State is really over playing those passes to the wing. We need to go back door cut on 'em.

Chad Hallack 9 years, 11 months ago

Yes Raven, backdoor and feed the post, feed the post, feed the post...

Alec White 9 years, 11 months ago

Sherron is getting really unlucky with his bounces right now.

Theutus 9 years, 11 months ago

I don't see how Cole committed a foul. He had possession and a KSU player literally dove into him. How about calling THAT a foul.

NH_JHawk 9 years, 11 months ago

It's not often you see a player commit a foul while flat on his back. Questionable call right there against Aldrich.

Chuck Wagstaff 9 years, 11 months ago

Only 3 turnovers so far - I think we had 20 at this point yesterday.

Joe Studebaker 9 years, 11 months ago

I was thinking the same thing Raven. They are over pursuing on the wings. We need to fake a pass to the wing and lob it up for X again!!!

Chad Hallack 9 years, 11 months ago

How does a ref standing over a scrum call a jump ball then change his mind and call a foul. Frank Martin doesn't get to make the call ref... YOU do!

MrPilot 9 years, 11 months ago

We are playing much better ball tonight...nice job so far. Rock Chalk

Chad Hallack 9 years, 11 months ago

Stupid play Cole... stupid, stupid, stupid.

Theutus 9 years, 11 months ago

haha, the Cole train is coming through!

At least Robinson will get some very good experience playing this physical of a team.

Chuck Wagstaff 9 years, 11 months ago

Big XII officials - "We make the SEC look good!"

Alec White 9 years, 11 months ago

Sherron needs to distribute the rest of the game and just take open threes. I think that's our formula for success the rest of the way.

Theutus 9 years, 11 months ago

Robinsons second attempt was a foul by far. Guy in front of him was just holding his left forearm.

KU08 9 years, 11 months ago

I like Frank Martin, but sometimes he just needs to take a chill pill.

trueblue9 9 years, 11 months ago

Love the 2 for 1 possession move there by Sherron. 90% of teams screw that up.

Alec White 9 years, 11 months ago

And then Sherron makes me eat my words with a beautiful driving lay-up so we can get the ball for the last shot...that's why I'm posting here and coach self is on the sideline

BCRavenJHawkfan 9 years, 11 months ago

That double drible in the Big East is never called, it always is considered not having complete posession.

shawk13 9 years, 11 months ago

@Theutus - I agree, fouled on the second attempt.

Prediction: After Frank Martin's head explodes early in the second half we go on a 20-0 run to end it a blow out.

BCRavenJHawkfan 9 years, 11 months ago

Is Collins playing without a mouth gard tonight.

3puttbogey 9 years, 11 months ago

No good. Bob Knight should keep his mouth shut.

trueblue9 9 years, 11 months ago

Proving again that Bob is an idiot. Dumb move have Connor in there, he blew his blockout.

Alec White 9 years, 11 months ago

Haha Bob how bout' you have a coke and retire...Real close, but not quite close enough! What a great half! Rock Chalk!!!

BCRavenJHawkfan 9 years, 11 months ago

Frank says his guys need to make shots.

Crap Frank, your guys have slopped in a number already!

Joe Studebaker 9 years, 11 months ago

Holly sure does resemble kermit the frog's girl friend!!!!! ha ha ha ha

3puttbogey 9 years, 11 months ago

shawk13 - Frank Martin's head exploded earlier this year. What you see is what's left. Mostly ears.

kennethst 9 years, 11 months ago

KU is playing much better than Thurday and Friday. Unfotunately, so is K-State.

I think we will outlast them and win......they will wear down before we do!

Chad Hallack 9 years, 11 months ago

Close at the half as expected... But I feel really comfortable, we seem to have the game under control. Look for a trasition basket off a Cole block or couple 3's to spark a run for us in the 2nd half... I still say we win by 12-15

kennethst 9 years, 11 months ago

I cringe every time Clemente and Pullen take shots......wow they are good.

Still......KU is better.....we will prevail.

Alec White 9 years, 11 months ago

I think Tyshawn Taylor understands his role finally. I looked at the stats and he hasn't scored a point, yet he's played a brilliant first half in my opinion. That is your role this year---do anything your team needs at that specific point in the game. Next year you can up your scoring and prove your NBA worth.

trueblue9 9 years, 11 months ago

if you run to vegas you can get us at -2.5 for the second half

BCRavenJHawkfan 9 years, 11 months ago

And I will go out on a limb here. I think if K-State loses this game they go out in the first round of the Big Dance because they will be so dejected for losing THREE times to KU in the same season.

KU08 9 years, 11 months ago

With UK's blowout of Tennessee, KU better win if we want the St. Louis regional. (Not that I think a loss means KU should lose the overall no. 1 seed.)

dynamitehawk 9 years, 11 months ago

Stude,

My wife and I had a long conversation about her cleavage last night. I was in defense of Holly, because if you work with Erin Andrews - on a 'colleague' level, then it would be hard. Sort of like being Jeff Boschee on a team with Drew Gooden. My wife didn't agree.

kennethst 9 years, 11 months ago

Theutus-

Some great Defense by KU so far....don't you think? I think it will tire out K-State in the end.

floridajayhawks 9 years, 11 months ago

Cole still can't control a rebound when people are around. I know a little late on the post.

KU08 9 years, 11 months ago

JNewell, which team had the better fans in the first half?

MrPilot 9 years, 11 months ago

From the TV perspective, the fan noise level seemed pretty even on both ends.

kennethst 9 years, 11 months ago

Yes....who has more fans there? On TV it sounds about equal but hard to tell.

3puttbogey 9 years, 11 months ago

Only real concern so far is Cole has two fouls and doesn't seem comfortable. But Marcus has only one foul and seems to be very comfortable.

I hope Bill plays a little of that zone we saw yesterday. One, it would possibly trip up KState and two, we may need it starting next week.

KU08 9 years, 11 months ago

All I could tell from my living room is that KSU fans boo a lot. Man up, KSU fans! Come on, you've got freaking Frank Martin as your coach. Stop playing the victim!

3puttbogey 9 years, 11 months ago

kennethst - Chris Piper and Bob Davis on radio said they think KU has more fans there.

Mike Kendall 9 years, 11 months ago

Gimme your thoughts!!!!! I think Frank will pop a vein before the game is over!!!!

honk_for_hawks 9 years, 11 months ago

I don't know why there is so much hating against Bob Knight. Sometimes he is a little Madden-esque in that he says obvious statements a lot, but he is just giving a coaching perspective without all the fluff. Yeah it is a little annoying for the people who are very knowledgable of the game, but his ability to recognize defenses, know what the coaches are thinking, etc, make him WORLDS better than guys like dick vitale who don't even talk about the game half the time.

trueblue9 9 years, 11 months ago

25 - i will reserve the tyshawn bashing since the rest of the team is playing really well. but "brilliant" seems a bit strong.

honk_for_hawks 9 years, 11 months ago

trueblue, tyshawn hasn't been perfect, but his stupid lazy foul on clemente is about the only smudge on his first half.

MrPilot 9 years, 11 months ago

Yes! That's the way to open the half!

Joe Studebaker 9 years, 11 months ago

Marcus has that baseline shot down... that will change up how they guard us for sure if he keeps hitting that shot!!!

Mike Kendall 9 years, 11 months ago

Marcus Morris---talk about "money in the bank!"

Alec White 9 years, 11 months ago

Musberger---"A source told me Cole could get drafted in the top 15."

Way to go out on a limb there, considering he's in the top 10 in nearly every mock draft. That's like saying Evan Turner is probably the POY.

MrPilot 9 years, 11 months ago

Did Cole pick up a 3rd foul when they were missing those free throws?

Steve Gantz 9 years, 11 months ago

Anyone notice the Big12 is the only conference with all of its' major teams to get to the semis in their conference tournaments. I don't count the SEC because they only have 1 good team.

KU08 9 years, 11 months ago

honk_for_hawks - Wow, I can't believe that's the first time I've heard the Bob Knight-John Madden comparison, but you are so right. He just said something about "the more points KU score, the harder it will be for KSU to come back." Very Madden-esque.

jaybate 9 years, 11 months ago

Xavier just looks an order of magnitude better starting with second KU game. It is like something clicked in him. He really looks like he can play with most anyone from here on out.

3puttbogey 9 years, 11 months ago

...and I'm thinking you're a goober....

Steve Gantz 9 years, 11 months ago

3putt... They were saying it was morris, but it was obviously Cole. Sometimes these guys are too busy talking to really pay attention to the game.

jaybate 9 years, 11 months ago

Oh, my god! College boys stayed up till 1am? I'm surprised they even showed up! Yeah, right. I never went to bed before 1am for the first three years I was at college. Give me a break you dorks!!!

Alec White 9 years, 11 months ago

Shot clock never went off but it was definitely at 0 before Pullen shot that.

ellsworthhawk 9 years, 11 months ago

coach doesn't seem so calm and collected any more.

Steve Gantz 9 years, 11 months ago

On the replay it looked like X grabbed his arm.

trueblue9 9 years, 11 months ago

There you have the problem with Bob. "That was a huge possession for KState because they were trying to cut into the lead. Now its a huge possession for KU because they are trying to expand the lead." Thanks Bob. And that was a BS call on Marcus, check your monitor every once in a while Bob, the producers show replays there.

Mike Kendall 9 years, 11 months ago

Was that a foul on X?----give me a break!!!!!!!!

Kent Wells 9 years, 11 months ago

Dynamite! You had a conversation with your wife about someone elses cleavage? What the hell! Are you trying to get deleted at home!?!

Chad Hallack 9 years, 11 months ago

I do not like the zone idea against this team at all... Pullen and Clemente shoot it too well. The zone worked last night 'cuz they missed open shots.

Jesse Newell 9 years, 11 months ago

KU08 — KU has more fans, and those fans have been louder.

Jesse Newell 9 years, 11 months ago

This comment was removed by the site staff for violation of the usage agreement.

Chad Hallack 9 years, 11 months ago

We're playing well man 2 man... if it ain't broke don't fix it

Joe Studebaker 9 years, 11 months ago

watching game on espn but listening to Pipe and Davis... Pipe gives credit where credit is due. I have heard him many times give Kstate credit for a play... So glad we have them on the radio!! Great job Pipe and Davis

Chuck Wagstaff 9 years, 11 months ago

Knight is a horrible announcer. I won't even get into the kind of human he is.

3puttbogey 9 years, 11 months ago

Here comes the Judge. Ooops! Someone banged his gavel for him!

Dan Harris 9 years, 11 months ago

We should be putting them away right now by letting them hang around I'm afraid it might bite us in the ass.

Theutus 9 years, 11 months ago

Well, we fell apart there for a bit.... Lets see how we respond.

optichawk 9 years, 11 months ago

I heard 810AM got 11K signatures to get rid of Musberger and Knight... the lateness of the game last night comment made me sign as well. Hey KSU, win the Big12 and you get to play the earlier game. Can Mus and Knight be that dumb?

Joe Studebaker 9 years, 11 months ago

We need to start taking better care of the ball... Getting too sloppy on the offensive side...

Chad Hallack 9 years, 11 months ago

You knew TT was pull a bonehead eventually... he frustrates me so.

Alec White 9 years, 11 months ago

White men can't jump...but they sure can shoot and pass!!!

trueblue9 9 years, 11 months ago

Its that effing easy. Why does it take a timeout and BS drawing up the play for us to run that?

11,000 signatures isn't enough. Add two zeros.

MrPilot 9 years, 11 months ago

Yes! Dammit I wish Cole would jam more often! That's exactly why!

3puttbogey 9 years, 11 months ago

Markieff - God made you 6' 9'' for a reason. D U N K the ball!

Theutus 9 years, 11 months ago

Clemente just got bailed out by a fluke lucky shot right there.... lol.

BCRavenJHawkfan 9 years, 11 months ago

See how K-State's hedging on the wing is working to our advantage now.

Steve Gantz 9 years, 11 months ago

I hope something happens to delay the game for about an hour, power failure, broken backboard or something, then our game goes into 2 overtimes and the Big East misses the entire 1st half of their game.

Alec White 9 years, 11 months ago

Come on Markieff!!! I know you got fouled but you have to put that in. Collins was trying not to be mad but how could you not be? He's still playin well but he could've ended up with a 20/10 game if he put in his bunnies.

David Howell 9 years, 11 months ago

Collins, too many times out of control !!!!

BCRavenJHawkfan 9 years, 11 months ago

He's hoisted up a number of prayers that have been answered Theutus.

Alec White 9 years, 11 months ago

That's it, I'm getting a Morningstar jersey.

Theutus 9 years, 11 months ago

Too many missed bunnies, and it's costing us pretty badly.

3puttbogey 9 years, 11 months ago

Charging on Clemente. Refs gotta call that.

Theutus 9 years, 11 months ago

Reed yet again. My favorite freaking player on the team.

BCRavenJHawkfan 9 years, 11 months ago

Who gives a rats arse Bob, it was a foul any way. Which is better because K-State is getting into trouble.

3puttbogey 9 years, 11 months ago

Well thanks Mossburg and Night. Did they call a T or not?

trueblue9 9 years, 11 months ago

T this clown up please. We are all scared of him, but thats why they pay you to wear the stripes.

NH_JHawk 9 years, 11 months ago

No more mulligans. next time Martin is that far out on the floor, T him up. BS.

Chuck Wagstaff 9 years, 11 months ago

Best news of the day -

After this game, no more Bullsh__ from Bristol. ESPN is done.

Dan Harris 9 years, 11 months ago

Dunk the freaken ball!!! JEEEEEEZZZZZEEEE!!!!!

Theutus 9 years, 11 months ago

I can't decide if i want him to get the T (because that's what he was after), or if I prefer him to get stiffed on it.... Because that's not what he wanted.

2 free points and a possession, or not letting K-State get the motivation from Coach picking up a T.

I think since we have the ball anyway, it's worth not giving him what he wants.

3puttbogey 9 years, 11 months ago

Markieff hit the back of the hand while in FRONT of the KSU player?

Dan Harris 9 years, 11 months ago

Great move my ass BOB! Give bug eyes a T like he deserves!!

Alec White 9 years, 11 months ago

And that's the difference between Sherron before the Big XII tournament and Sherron in the Big XII tournament---he usually would've shot that double-teamed in the lane and instead he found Reed which resulted in three free-throws. That's the type of decisions that will win us the NC.

Steve Gantz 9 years, 11 months ago

Pullen went to school in the suburbs, Proviso East, Collins in the city, so not sure how often they really played each other. These guys make it seem that they hung out at the same playground together or something.

3puttbogey 9 years, 11 months ago

She got chills at the pre-game meal also.

BCRavenJHawkfan 9 years, 11 months ago

Finally pushed to 10 up.

Now, put the hammer down!

Alec White 9 years, 11 months ago

If Collins got assists for when his passes results in free-throws for teammates he would have about 12 by now. He's playing a really solid game and is sticking on Pullen pretty darn well (even though Pullen has gotten hot of late).

3puttbogey 9 years, 11 months ago

Ok Brett, now tell us about the discovery of fire.

trueblue9 9 years, 11 months ago

I've heard of play-ground legends, but fraternity legend? I think not.

Chuck Wagstaff 9 years, 11 months ago

The only redeeming quality Frank Martin has is that you can hook up jumper cables to his ears in a pinch.

Alec White 9 years, 11 months ago

Note to Kansas: Samuels can and will drain the 3! Samuels can and will drain the 3! Man up Jayhawks!!!

Dan Harris 9 years, 11 months ago

Step on its throat and listen to the bones break! Meowarghhhhhh!

TarzanKUfan 9 years, 11 months ago

Has anyone ever come back to beat us after we started the chant Rock Chalk.

MrPilot 9 years, 11 months ago

It's sad when those are the memories the players have of their coach.

BCRavenJHawkfan 9 years, 11 months ago

Okay, okay, okay. Frank has his 15 seconds of fame. Move on.

3puttbogey 9 years, 11 months ago

Frank Martin does not "Fear the Beard".

Dan Harris 9 years, 11 months ago

That was off a kittycat! Damnit refs come on !

optichawk 9 years, 11 months ago

Great coaching Frank... Scream and berate your best player with under 3 to go... just great...worth a million $...NOT!!!!!!

Alec White 9 years, 11 months ago

I can't wait for a star player to quit on Frank mid-game. It's gonna happen, and I'm thinking sooner rather than later.

3puttbogey 9 years, 11 months ago

We almost never lose when we get to 70. I feel really good.

floridajayhawks 9 years, 11 months ago

Cole needs to improve his rebounding control.

Alec White 9 years, 11 months ago

That was really dumb by Cole...he could've got called for it when Reed missed his second FT and he went for it again and got caught. O well, I think we have it in the bag.

BCRavenJHawkfan 9 years, 11 months ago

Frank Martin and his players employing the Jay Wright method of closing out a game.

3puttbogey 9 years, 11 months ago

Three times KSU. Three times. Let me laugh my head off.

wooooooooooooooooooooooooooohooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!

MrPilot 9 years, 11 months ago

Suck it, kitties!

shawk13 9 years, 11 months ago

K-State played well, respect where it is due.

MrPilot 9 years, 11 months ago

Guess who just locked up the overall #1 seed? I believe KU just did! w00t!

Joe Studebaker 9 years, 11 months ago

How do we watch the cutting of the nets ?

BCRavenJHawkfan 9 years, 11 months ago

Notice also how this game finished well on time so the next one is available for those fans.

Mike Kendall 9 years, 11 months ago

Sherron ---- MVP

Did you see that hug? -- Holly Rowe and Sherron -- that was not ordinary hug!

1 Overall seed -- going to OKC & hopefully, St. Louie!!!!!

Looks like we will play the winner of the play-in game, traditionally played in Dayton, OH, on that Tuesday after Selection Sunday. Who will it be??????

lovemyhawks 9 years, 11 months ago

scared to death of the 3rd game but this one was SWEET!!!!!! 3 for 3 over the poor pussycats...... couldn't be better!!! LOVE IT!!!! now 6 more...... no slowing up...... its ours IF we want it...... let's go!!!!!!

Jayhawk1116 9 years, 11 months ago

Brent Musberger totally screwed up the history of "Rock Chalk Jayhawk". This will never be forgiven...

MrPilot 9 years, 11 months ago

So nice to FINALLY see 40 minutes of solid play by my Hawks. Now, onwards and upwards. You've got one more trophy to win, gentlemen!

trueblue9 9 years, 11 months ago

ESPN scheduled an hour between games here so that no one misses any part of the Big East game. Very important. (or you could just say they wanted to do some recap, but whatever)

First complete game we've played in awhile. Congrats hawks.

MrPilot 9 years, 11 months ago

Say, where's soobawls at? I think she owes the team and Coach Self a hearty congratulations...

KU08 9 years, 11 months ago

Ha ha, good pickup BCRaven. And ironically the next game is the Big East Championship. Still, I'm better off without vengeance. My heart can't take the long, double-overtime, Big East-type games.

kennethst 9 years, 11 months ago

Well....just one word boys....

AWESOME!!!!!

I'm done doubting this team. Done! They don't always play well but screw it.....

THEY WIN!!!!!

KU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

MrPilot 9 years, 11 months ago

Excuse me, TWO more trophies to win. You get one for winning your region too. My bad.

trueblue9 9 years, 11 months ago

We will not play the winner of the play in game because the Ok City site is a Th-Sat site. The play-in winner must play on Friday.

kennethst 9 years, 11 months ago

Jaybate,

Breaking out the special Johnny Walker tonight.....aged 15 years.

What a great performance by Kansas!!!!!!!!

BCRavenJHawkfan 9 years, 11 months ago

I really do think KSU goes out in the first round because they will be so down having gotten punked down in our house, their house, and the barbecue house.

kennethst 9 years, 11 months ago

Anybody else surprised to see Marcus Morris had 23 points??

Seemed like a quiet 23......oh well....he's a great kid and congrats to him.

Lacy Mohler 9 years, 11 months ago

LIked when Sherron threw his arms around Frank for a hug. Frank looked like he was in full rigor mortis. I don't think he is a touchy feely guy.

Mike Kendall 9 years, 11 months ago

trueblue9---wow, my mistake. So, are you saying that the Jayhawks must be playing on that Thursday? Hopefully, it is a night game, not an late morning or afternoon game.

kennethst 9 years, 11 months ago

BCRavenJHawkfan--

Maybe. But I think K-Stae will get to the 16 ....but eliminated in the first game there.

Their guards are so good.....I have to give them credit on that front.

trueblue9 9 years, 11 months ago

I too was surprised Kenneth because he only had 18. But whatever, hit the scotch.

Jim Dickerson 9 years, 11 months ago

kennethst---- 5 of those points must have been really quiet. Box score says he only had 18. 8 of 13 fg plus 2 of 4 ft.

kennethst 9 years, 11 months ago

trueblue-

You're right-Where the heck did I get 23?? Haven't even hit the Johnny Walker yet!

Oh well...18 is still awesome.

trueblue9 9 years, 11 months ago

Yup, you can take it to the bank, we're playing Thursday, take the day off. Now, complete speculation, but CBS usually doesn't put the 1/16 game in primetime, so look for it to be either a noon or 2:30pm start Kansas time.

TarzanKUfan 9 years, 11 months ago

Love the picture of Cole he looks like a leucemia child......awesome.

Scott Smetana 9 years, 11 months ago

I hope Collins pinches Frank's butt next time we beat them in the tourney just to see what he does.

Collins did less today, and played better.

Gotta make those chlppies. The twins are key. A few NBeautiful shots by the twins today.

Holy cow Tyshawn has hops!!

Nice balanced, team effort... perfect game to take a break on.

Let's do this.....

kennethst 9 years, 11 months ago

jessiejayhawk--

I know.....no idea where I got 23......but he was still just awesome.

Great win!

James122 9 years, 11 months ago

Good-We won 72-64--we held the kitty cats to 35% shooting-WOW!! Bad-11 to's----3 real bad passes or we would be in single digits Ugly-1st half scoring-,shooting 2-8 from the 3pt-X shooting-1-7

+/- of players + for each point, assist, rebound, blk,and steal - for total fg's missed, missed freethrows and TO's

  1. Cole Aldrich----------24 points
  2. Marcus Morris-------20 points
  3. Sherron Collins-----17 points
  4. Tyrel Reed------------15 points
  5. Markieff Morris------10 points
  6. Tyshawn Taylor------8 points
  7. Brady Moringstar----8 points
  8. X---------------------------6 points
  9. Robinson---------------+1

Overall: A dog fight on defense and KU won the fight! Reed played a great game!

Cole has to have a more impact on offense for us to win the NCAA Championship.

The switch to the 2-3 again was a great move and helped us on the boards. I would love to face the kitty cats 1 more time-Just maybe we could see them in the Championship. What hurts them is as a team cant make ft's-8-14-57%!!

Go Hawks, just 6 more wins and the goal is complete!

trueblue9 9 years, 11 months ago

kenneth, in your defense, he would've had 24 if he made three layups

kennethst 9 years, 11 months ago

Trueblue---

I know! I hate that. It almost looks like he goes in for a layup and is shocked that he has a clear shot. Maybe he is expecting a foul?

JJJJJAYHAWK 9 years, 11 months ago

A Very nice win, sorry Cats, but I for one; am grateful to have better competition in the Big 12 north. Good luck in the Tournament, Hope to meet up with you again...because 4 wins for the Jayhawks against the wild kittens in one season would be fantastic.

hawkward1 9 years, 11 months ago

Broadcasters all tournament team.... Collins Aldrich Clemente Pullen Sloan

For best 6th man, I hereby nominate Keiton Page's extra chromosome.

trueblue9 9 years, 11 months ago

I hope the Big 12 regrets moving the tournament up a day this year. I really feel like it lost a lot of national exposure by the semifinals being relegated to regional espn. If the final were played tomorrow, it would clearly be the marquee game of the day.

Big win today. Both for confidence and momentum. This is just more proof that we can win a variety of ways. We barely got anything from X, Brady and Tyshawn, but it didn't matter. That said, we need to finish around the rim and take care of the ball a bit better, but do that and we control our own destiny.

Has anyone ever beat a team four times in a season? I suspect not, but thought someone might know.

Rick Arnoldy 9 years, 11 months ago

If Marcus doesn't win "most improved player" at the post-season awards banquet there's something wrong with the voting. Markieff better place second.

Dr_Roach 9 years, 11 months ago

This comment was removed by the site staff for violation of the usage agreement.

MrPilot 9 years, 11 months ago

It's better for the tournament to end on Saturday, as opposed to Selection Sunday, because it's easier for the tournament committee to consider the result in seeding. If it doesn't end until a few hours before the brackets come out, they've probably had to just guess who the winner will be, or, ignore it.

Basically, it's more advantageous to the winning team for it to be held on Saturday.

trueblue9 9 years, 11 months ago

Maybe, I'm sure thats why they did it and see the argument. But I think its conjecture to say that, we don't really know how the committee thinks. They could simply have a contingency built in where outcome A does X, B necessitates Y. Give the committee more credit.

Basically I'm just pissed I had to watch the semis on the internet while the Big East and ACC quarters got national coverage. Did you just see the Big East final introductions like they were in the final four? Ridiculous.

MrPilot 9 years, 11 months ago

I think after today Sherron has 129 wins. 133 wins ties the all-time record. So, if we make it to the Championship game, he becomes the winningest NCAA player ever.

matthecker 9 years, 11 months ago

Ummmm K-state, our trophy case is full, can we borrow yours??? lmao RCJH!!!

Mike Kendall 9 years, 11 months ago

Trueblue9--- Danny and the Miracles---1988---I know we defeated K-State in the Big Dance to get to Kemper Arena. Did we play them three times that year. We probably lost in Manhattan that year. Good question---I know we played OU three times and the last one was the NC game!

getserious 9 years, 11 months ago

Has anyone ever beat a team four times in a season? I suspect not, but thought someone might know In 1986 Kentucky beat Alabama 4 times, 2 regular season, 1 SEC tourney, and one Sweet 16 in the Omni. That was also the year that the NCAA put all the SEC teams in one bracket. They changed the rule after that year to spread teams from the same conference out. That sweet 16 had Bama-Derrick Mckey, Georgia Tech_Mark Price, Kentucky-Kenny "sky" Walker and LSU. Guess who won? LSU.

trueblue9 9 years, 11 months ago

good call mikendal. looked it up and we did actually play them 4 times that year. 2-2 though (won the important one)

Mike Kendall 9 years, 11 months ago

Trueblue9-- I had a haunch we had played them four times in 1988, but wasn't for sure the exact record. Thanks for looking it up and relaying the info.

Rock Chalk forever!

did enjoy the game and was thrilled to see us play TOUGH for 40 minutes, i thought! still missing too many bunnies...... and yes, marcus SHOULD have had more points for sure! OUCH! he cannot continue to do that but i knew he should play well today..... he was the only one "rested" from last nite!! thought tyrel was huge today..... good to see. sorry to see him miss those 2 FT late..... he could have been perfect all the way around and our FT% would have been phenomenal!! still good and so great to push the cats down a 3rd time!! wow......... 6 more to go....... feeling much better about the ride now..... think we are really coming around..... no let down boys...... give it your all 6 more games for 40 minutes each game!! RCJH!!

who are you predicting for the 4 #1 seeds....... the other conferences have made a mess out of things, huh??

trueblue9 9 years, 11 months ago

1 seeds....working on the fly here cause this game isn't over...

KU - St. Louis UK - Houston (even if they lose to MSU, which they won't) Duke - NY (assuming they finish off a bad GTech squad, if not, Ohio St. or second Big East team come into play) Cuse - SLC (because WV is going to blow this, but if they don't, WV)

Basically, I don't know.

Mike Kendall 9 years, 11 months ago

My #1 seeds are:

**KU Jayhawks---#1 Overall seed

**Kentucky---if they defeat Miss. State---if UK loses, then W.VA moves up
to a #1 seed.

**Syracuse still gets a #1 seed, IMO.

**Duke gets a #1 seed---if they lose, then, Ohio State needs to enter the discussion for a #1 seed.

Final Comment---It seems like to me, and a lot of folks have said this, the upcoming March Madness tournament will produce a lot of close games, buzzer beaters, surprise upsets, etc. Just hope it isn't the Jayhawks who get surprised! Bring on the Madness, baby!!!!!!

Lone_salina_kufan 9 years, 11 months ago

Interesting fact: Big 12 Tourny was the only one where all top 4 seeds advanced to semis, and the only tourny that all 4 teams in the semis that were ranked in Top 25. I think that makes the argument that the Big 12 Tournament was the toughest one to win. I know the Big East is probably better top to bottom, but to win this tournament was special. I believe it was the only one that had two Top 10 teams battle it out in the final. THIS is the Big 12's and KU's night!!!! Rock Chalk Championship

Lone_salina_kufan 9 years, 11 months ago

I think this years conference tournys will hardly affect the seeding. I think its still the usual suspects for the number ones, even Syracuse. The only way I think they lose it is if Onuaku is really hurt bad. Just my opinion

lovemyhawks 9 years, 11 months ago

mikendal..... those make sense to me. ohio state has been VERY VERY lucky tho..... 2 straight nites....... they should not be there at all. watching west va tied up right now and they were also lucky last nite..... i'm thinking maybe duke.

Chad Hallack 9 years, 11 months ago

How do you beat a Big 10 or Big East team?

Score more than 60...

lovemyhawks 9 years, 11 months ago

yes, i think this will be a wacky dance with lots of upsets and the seedings will be very interesting. i agree, don't want the jayhawks to be part of the chaos...... hope we can play tough and glide through to the NC!! RCJH!

lovemyhawks 9 years, 11 months ago

syracuse did lose early in their tournament......not sure if that will affect their #1 or not....

Post Game Bulletin:

} jaybate's prayer answered--after two straight 50% plus trey games, KU plummeted to 25% vs. KSU and still managed to win. Now we only have one more stinker to endure (assuming the basketball god keeps track of games rather than total trey attempts), before we begin shooting back up to our average. Hopefully, the second stinker comes in the first round against a mid-major that we can grind out a win against. From then on, maybe we can catch fire and burn hot to the end.

} The All American Morri Composite just got 25 points and 14 glassvacs. If some NBA GM had a brain he would draft them as a Morri Package in the top 15. Really, what other individual four around the country can come close to these two guys? And what other composite 4 for that matter? They are now officially amazing.

} Its also official (brace yourself Theutus, soobawls and many others; this may hurt). Tyrel is no longer the slow guy that can shoot. He's now the guy that can defend Denis Clemente, one of the fastest guards in the B12 for 20 minutes, do a very good job on him, and pour in 15 himself; i.e., outscore Denis on a per minute played basis.

Tyrel Reed is just getting better and better on defense. Its the most improvement in a perimeter defensive player in a single season that I recall. And when Tyrel has an off season to add 10 pounds of muscle to this newly matured body of his, he's is going to be a real handful for people to defend next year. He's going to be able to muscle a lot of guards on offense and defense next season that he has finessed until now. I'm not saying he's a go get a basket guy yet, but he's getting very close. Right now, the only thing that is standing between him and go get a basket is 10 pounds of muscle and no need for him to do it with Sherron. Imagine having to guard Ty on the drive with 10 more pounds, when you have stay up on him at the trey stripe to protect against 45 percent trifectation. Whew! The basketball god is smiling on the Jayhawks yet again.

jaybate 9 years, 11 months ago

} Having Taylor, Morningstar and Reed playing terrific defense next year and shooting the rock at 40% plus from trey is going to cushion the blow of Sherron's departure at least a little. Add Selby to that group and KU is in the clover again. Or add an Elijah that can defend and stroke at 38% and likewise. And notice who got in and got a minute of a look at the end of the game: Conner Teahan. Good for Conner.

} So many problems can be surmounted with a player like Sherron. Versus KSU, Sherron put on one of the most sublime displays of driving I've seen. No one can stay with him, once he gets an alley to the basket. Close it and he spins. I've never seen a guy as accurate on drives as he is. He can just bank if off the windshield from any angle and drop it through. Truly an amazing player.

} Cole did not do big numbers, but even when he doesn't do that he is just such an octopus on shot blocking and altering. I can see it 20 years from now. The NCAA adds a shot altering stat. Anyone still alive by then that remembers this season will be saying, "Yeah, well, if they had kept that statistic back when Cole played he would have averaged 20 a night!"

} Frank Martin has to be looking heavenward and asking, "What does it take, basketball god?" Martin's team keeps doing everything he asks them to do each time they play KU, and each time KSU does what he asks, KU wriggles around and finds yet another way to win.

KSU beats KU at steals, blocks, TOs, trey shooting, and offensive rebounds, and keeps it close on the defensive windshield, but then can't drain oil from inside the trey at either FGAs (35%), or at the no-fee stripe (57%).

Frank, baby, you've got to land some more trinitizers.

} Main bad for this game? No five minute stint for either TRob, or Withey. Very bad! Cole seems to be getting a bit foul prone. Probably just loss of springs the last two games, due to 3 games in what seems like 20 minutes. But he's going to come up against several guys that can foul him up in the Madness and we're going to need more than Kieff and Cus. The only thing I can figure is that Self thinks the short line-up of Sherron, Reed, Morningstar, Henry, and Kieff is going to be resorted to should Cole get fouled up.

Let the Madness begin!!!!!

The four number one seeds will remain the same just with the order scrambled a little:

Duke the #3 One Seed in the East Kentucky the #2 One Seed in the South Syracuse the #4 One seed in the West Kansas the #1 One seed in the Midwest

Caught the game in bits and pieces throughout the evening. The one word that comes to mind to describe the effort is "Workmanlike".

First round game, KU could start CJ, EJ, Jeff, Thomas and Conner and win by 20!!

Bonus seeding for overall Number One: No schools whose first initial is "B" No more schools whose colors are orange. No more Holly No schools with human names [Orangemen, Braves, Cowboys, Volunteers] Only schools with animals [ Wildcats Kentucky, Villanova, Kansas State, etc.]

jaybate 9 years, 11 months ago

Post script:

} The difference maker on defense was the lock down on Sutton. 30 minutes and 3 points. X and Brady take a big, huge bow. You couldn't score on him much either. But your composite was 7, or double his.

jaybate 9 years, 11 months ago

Syrexcuse gets the one seed to keep the ratings up.

tetonjhawk 9 years, 11 months ago

THe last two games an emotional event lifted us to big point spurts. No drama tonight. Just a working mans finish. Always an answer after KSU comebacks. The identity is determined. The missed bunnies will drive us crazy but in the end, stubborn tenacity and contributions from all players are driving this team.
Kentucky looked like they are peaking to me today. Anyone else see that? Bledsoe's shooting contributions are there key. Lets go! RCJHKU!

Mike Kendall 9 years, 11 months ago

KU VS UK---for the NC!!!! Ashley Judd was at UK's game today. HC Bill Self defeats Coach John C. for the 2nd time in the NC---surprise, surprise! Rock Chalk!

trueblue - tourney was actually moved up a day last year. I have heard all the arguments for why it helps the teams to end the tourney on Sat, but it really hurts the fans. Starting on Wed makes us have to take an extra day off work as well. Not a big deal as long as the tourney is in KC most of the time, but I feel for those who have to travel for this on different days now.

Correct on the 2-2 record against the Cats in '88. Wierd combination of wins v losses that year -

Lost in Lawrence (ended 55 game home streak) Won in Manhattan (last appearance at Ahearn I think) Lost in KC at Big 8 Semi's Won in Pontiac Mich (to make Final Four)

Some of you old fogeys may also remember that when the Big 8 first started its post-season tourney in 1977, they also still played the old Big 8 Holiday Tourney. We played the Cats four times in both 76-77 year (went 1-3) and 77-78 year (went 3-1, with loss coming in post-season tourney). The holiday tourney was discontinued after the 78-79 year (interestingly only played Cats twice that year in reg season, and not in either tourney). Can't think of anyone we ever beat all four times in a year.

Additional comment for those concerned about ESPN covering ACC, as well as some others. If you notice in the promos for those games, take note that ESPN is blacked out in the ACC markets for some of these games. We have the same issue here, as this covers each conference's local/regional TV packages. That being said, ESPN2 has had a few more of the Big 12 games before the final in recent years. Hopefully they will continue to add games in this regard.

Great job overall today. A little nerve racking at times, but it was certainly a very entertaining game to watch. Need to watch the unneccessary fouls at the end of games. Hate giving opponents chances to score in tight games with the clock stopped. This will be another thing Coach will work on them, while prepping for the big dance next week.

Already chomping at the bit for Thursday. Rock Chalk!!

Was it Nick Krug's decision to post that photo of the post-game celebration by the team? Sorry, but Cole looks like the kid that just got off the short bus and was allowed to have his picture taken with his favorite team, sorta like Radio. Surely there was a more flattering shot where all of our guys looked like champions.

Regardless of the photo, I'm ecstatic about this season. Reflecting back, I can't believe the contrast from the game I sat through in St. Louis against Memphis to where we are now. There's the NCAA Division 1 and then there's KU!

Everybody root for Gottlieb's ascension at the Mothership. A guy that went to a midwest school (Oklahoma State), and isn't afraid to put his two cents in against those from the East Coast. He's the kinda guy that can really help KU and the other Big 12 teams get a bit of the air-time they deserve when Vitale, Bilas, and the others want to talk about the Big Beast and ACC blue bloods.

lovemyhawks 9 years, 11 months ago

i agree...... no "B" teams, no orange......... we're on our way!!! bring it on..... think the hawks are now ready to play and play tough!! sure hope so!! NC here we come! anxious to see the brackets! RCJH!!
