— Josh Selby, the No. 4 ranked basketball senior according to Rivals.com, will be attending Kansas University next year.

The 6-foot-3, 185-pound guard from Baltimore made his decision at the 12-minute media timeout of the Jordan Brand Classic at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

"It's (a) tough (decision), but I'm going to be a Kansas Jayhawk," Selby said.

He chose KU over Tennessee, Kentucky, Arizona and Connecticut.

As expected, guard Doron Lamb, the 21st-ranked player according to Rivals.com, will play for Kentucky. He made his announcement at the 12-minute media timeout during the second half.

Another East Coast recruit for Self & Co. Keep up the good work!

Jeff Kilgore 10 years, 5 months ago

Absolutely. It's hard to stay at the top without a mixture of east coast kids--like the MTwins.

I haven't been this excited about a recruit since Paul Pierce.

I love it. Welcome to town Josh. Excited to see him in Crimson And blue

Kye Clark 10 years, 5 months ago

Allright, now where's Jayhawkinmullen? You better talk to that AAU coach you have as a friend and ask him why he's feeding you bogus info. And where's Vinnie_Vin? He told everyone that thought Selby was coming to Lawrence was "kidding themselves". Seriously bro, time to man up like you said you would.

Firebirdguy31 10 years, 5 months ago

Once again, my cynicism yields positive results.

Chris Bruning 10 years, 5 months ago

no doubt Jaminrawk....best point guard in the class....everyone else take notice to John Calipari's "next great point guard's" ball handling whoa's???

mandomax 10 years, 5 months ago

Also, I've seen Selby listed at both 6'2" and 6'3." Can anyone comment on this? Maybe the 6'2" number is just a little outdated...? After all, he is 18 and could still be growing.

Firebirdguy31 10 years, 5 months ago

6'2 is barefoot, 6'3 is with shoes most likely. However most teams exaggerate a players height. For instance, some billed Michael Beasley as 6'10, but in reality he's barely 6'9, this was actually a draft issue for him because he wasn't tall enought to be a true Power Forward, however, he's now listed as 6'10 on his NBA profile. Funny how that works. If you went up to a player with a tape measure and asked to measure their height, they would probably decline.

MDHawk 10 years, 5 months ago

A lot of these kids keep growing until they're 22-23 or so...not surprised if they grow an inch or two between graduating high school and when they graduate/jump to the pros.

waywardJay 10 years, 5 months ago

excellent. beyond excellent. Fantastic, bring your popcorn for some showtime this winter.

Can anybody else see another NCAA championship on the horizon? Smart move Mr. Selby. RCJH GO KU!!!!!

KU08 10 years, 5 months ago

I can see one, but I'll be much more confident if Selby stays for two years (wishful thinking).

dwill33 10 years, 5 months ago

i missed the beginning of the game and want to see the video of him announcing. anyone find the video online yet?

KU08 10 years, 5 months ago

You didn't miss much. Selby was all business and made comments about liking Kansas and Self's personality. It wasn't as exciting as a hat ceremony (not that we've ever been happy after one of those).

kvskubball 10 years, 5 months ago

Yeah, but I'll take it over the Doron Lamb 'commercial' in saying he's going to Kentucky...thanking everyone, the sponsors...really?

When he started that speel, I thought for sure he was Kentucky bound...

I liked that Selby was all busines, and seemed to be thinking about how important a decision it was for him!

Welcome to KU Josh...and you WON the game...you did say before the game started that was what you were there for!

gchawk 10 years, 5 months ago

Awesome! Welcome to the crimson and blue Josh, I believe you'll find it most accomodating.

Linda Daxon 10 years, 5 months ago

I am excited FOR Selby. He can't begin to know what a good time he is going to have being a Jayhawk. He'll be able to take pride in that for the rest of his life. This is a great win/win for both sides.

Brennan Keller 10 years, 5 months ago

With the addition of selby, Kansas becomes a top 10 team! thats my guess...

MDHawk 10 years, 5 months ago

Agree...we lose a couple guys, but gain an amazing one...should be top 5, I think. We shall see...

Theutus 10 years, 5 months ago

Kansas should be a top 10 team regardless, but yes.... I'm stoked to have Selby coming in.

Selby and EJ are quite frankly the scariest duo in PG athleticism in the country in my opinion.

MDHawk 10 years, 5 months ago

Going to be great...both of those guys can get to the rim with ease. If Selby shows up ready to do (which I figure he will), and EJ has developed as much as I hope (I figure he did), you've got speed, you've got the ability to slice through the lane and get to the hoop, and you've got the ability to dish...this is going to be fun to watch!!

Jeff Schartz 10 years, 5 months ago

Congratulations, Coach Self. We are very proud of the job that you are doing with our young men.

KU08 10 years, 5 months ago

What does Lebron James have to do with Kentucky? Why is he recruiting players to UK? Anyone who gets such star treatment and perks from the UK AD shouldn't be allowed to recruit. The guy isn't even an alumni. He just has a common friend with Calipari in William Wesley (WWW).

Firebirdguy31 10 years, 5 months ago

Exactly, and World Wide Wes knows every top Executive representing the League, ie. Nike. While Wes doesn't give players money, he offers "assistance" to help players reach their "full potential." He uses Lebron to woo them wherever he wants them to go. In college bball it just happens to be through his good friend, Squeaky Clean Calipari. I have no clue how Wes makes his money though, I'm not sure anyone really does. He obviously has something to do with Nike and endorsements. There is no way he works for free.

John Randall 10 years, 5 months ago

Well, you're right on one point, at least ... James isn't a UK "alumni" ... nor is anyONE else. It takes more than ONE person to qualify for a plural noun, you know.

KU08 10 years, 5 months ago

Wow, you is so smart. How you get to be so smart?

I knew right after posting that someone would call me out on it. I'm just glad it wasn't from anyone I respect.

MDHawk 10 years, 5 months ago

Hey, it's tough to post on a Saturday night when you've had a few too many...come now, 62. I'm a little under the weather...care to continue your review of English 110?

chriz 10 years, 5 months ago

So who's Self picking up next? And who are we starting next year? Can we start Selby, Tyshawn Taylor, and Elijah Johnson? Who are the remaining two? Morris and... Withey?!

John Randall 10 years, 5 months ago

Out of the gate (November), I see the Morri, Little, TT and either Henry the Elder or Reed as the starters.

By January, possibilities include two other Bigs, three other guards (two frosh among them) to start at least some of the time. Morningstar won't start until SrNite, and maybe only one or two guys will start all year long. If you think you know which two, lend me your Ouija board.

I also don't see Self being so stubborn about keeping the rotation as shallow as he did this past season -- I still think a "shock troop" five-at-a-time substitution could be effective as hell. Even if you only used it once every third game, for 2 minutes or so, having that kind of threat makes headaches for opposing coaches in preparation. I'd love to see that in Columbia - a dose of their own!

Brian Conrad 10 years, 5 months ago

Lamb signs with LeBron's agent ... Kentucky and Calapari on NCAA sanctions... no tourney for you. UK will be caught eventually. Memphis has learned the cheating ways of Cal. KU has 100 times better team for Selby. Morris twins and Withey - UK ? senior leadership from Brady and Tyrell- UK ? big time advancement in Mario, Tyshawn , Johnson , Robinson and Releford - UK ? Selby will outshine Knight and Lamb

resultsinMarch 10 years, 5 months ago

Great!

Selby said that it was a "tough decision." After he is here he will know without a doubt that it was the right decision!

Go Hawks!!

Linda Daxon 10 years, 5 months ago

Right on.
X was raised on KU basketball and I still don't think he had a clue how much he would love this place after only one (semi-disappointing) season. Bawled like a baby at the press conference announcing he was going pro. Sherron, too, teared up after playing his last game on Sr. night. People who haven't been here don't get was a truly special place Lawrence is. Selby is in for a great love affair: both him with the school and us with him.

KGphoto 10 years, 5 months ago

I only watched part of the game (first half) but he showed flashes a couple of times. He just blew by his man at the top of the key en route to a pull up jumper that missed. But his first step is devastating. He pulled up when he could easily taken it to the hole. Self will have him finishing those.

The other play was that fast-break, behind-the-back pass on the money.

Smooth and under control.

He also threw a lob from about half court, missing. But what a show we're gonna get. All that speed (Selby, Taylor, Johnson) and depth (Reed, Star, CJ) are gonna give Mizzy's 40 minutes of hell fits.

superdave 10 years, 5 months ago

When talking athleticism, let's include Tyshawn too. Remember his block at the top of the box? (White box inside the backboard) I'm sure there's a name for it. I was stunned that a PG could get up so high.

Brian Conrad 10 years, 5 months ago

Chriz... forgetting Mario, Markieff, Robinson will need 8 to 9 man rotation... please up the tempo , press press press .. witth all these ball handlers KU can be a nightmare for other teams

Brian Conrad 10 years, 5 months ago

also Lamb would not start over Tyshawn and Johnson.. was no big deal

heuy1981 10 years, 5 months ago

I know he is just going to be a frosh when he arrives on the hill but hes everything as advertised and some. Also did you here how much props and respect was given to him by J-will and the others.

Aaron Carpenter 10 years, 5 months ago

Why do people continue to use the term "frosh?" It not only makes zero sense but also sounds retarded.

jchief40 10 years, 5 months ago

Haha!! Me too dude. Frosh is such a stupid word that I wish was never spoken again on this site.

Dan Pawlowski 10 years, 5 months ago

I did some research and the term frosh is probably from the German slang used for a pre-college level student in the early 1800's, 'frosch' (frog). Since it has been around since the 1800s I doubt if such as sophisticated tactic as name calling will stop its usage.

kvskubball 10 years, 5 months ago

because they have more than a four word vocabulary!

John Randall 10 years, 5 months ago

Actually, they misuse the term -- it is a collective, therefore does not apply to an individual.

Of course, plural and singular distinctions are just 'nit-picking' when you have experienced only diluted, everybody-passes, educimation, ya no?

Brian Conrad 10 years, 5 months ago

Self keep picking up some 3 & 4 star long term players ( Royce) and team will stay in top 25 year in year out with final four potential almost every year.

KU08 10 years, 5 months ago

Agreed. I don't think I could handle the reload-or-bust philosophy that UK fans will have to put up with every year.

chriz 10 years, 5 months ago

I double agree. I say go for a one-and-done, go for a long-termer who can get some experience on the bench the first year behind developed upper-classmen, and win a championship with experience. Well, at least get to the Sweet 16. Ugh...

chriz 10 years, 5 months ago

coonrod--I was just talking about starters. I have no idea who will start. I don't really know where Withey fits in.

Jack Wilson 10 years, 5 months ago

Selby is a perfect fit. If I had it my way:

  1. Selby
  2. EJ
  3. Releford
  4. Marcus
    4a. Robinson

Off the bench 6. Reed 7. Markieff 8. Little 9. Withey 10. Taylor

Theutus 10 years, 5 months ago

Only think I would change is that Little should start of Releford, with Releford coming in and splitting time with him..... I like the way you think though!

jchief40 10 years, 5 months ago

What was that other players name we have? Morning.. yeah, Morninghan.

jchief40 10 years, 5 months ago

Yep. I just Googled it. CJ Morninghan.

dmku25 10 years, 5 months ago

Great news!!!!!! This will make a us a top ten team and a final four contender!!!! They should be more of a team. Selby seems to have a good head on his shoulders where from the start you could tell Xavier was in it just for himself. This is a much better signing then Henry was. Starting line up next year. Morris,Morris,Little,Taylor and Selby. I think Little is going to have a huge year!!

jchief40 10 years, 5 months ago

Dude get off the whole Xavier was in it for himself bit. That's just stupid.

hammerhawk 10 years, 5 months ago

Ahhh. Good. Glad you decided to come to the home of Basketball in America. Looking forward to another great year of Kansas basketball. Great to have you on the team.

kufreak1512 10 years, 5 months ago

So just on the ncaam page on espn.... doesnt report selby signing but reports ucla signing a juco transfer. I'm sick of bias and KU never given any respect

mandomax 10 years, 5 months ago

Selby hasn't actually signed his NLOI yet, he just announced that he is going to KU

MDHawk 10 years, 5 months ago

Yeah, but still...he did announce. I think that's newsworthy enough. Since when does the news wait for a story to become "official" before they air it?

KU08 10 years, 5 months ago

This is even more difficult than last year, but I got:

  1. Taylor
  2. Selby
  3. Little
  4. Marcus
  5. Markieff

Johnson, Reed, Releford relieve the guards (sorry Morningstar, you regressed too much last year). Robinson and Withey relieve the forwards (hopefully Terrence Jones can be added at the 3 or 4, but that hope is really greedy).

Theutus 10 years, 5 months ago

You wanna talk about someone not putting out, you better add Taylor to that list... He was awful all year with the exception of maybe 2 games. That's to say nothing of his "off the court" actions.

KU08 10 years, 5 months ago

I'm hoping Taylor's regression can be explained by a sophomore slump (although that might just apply to baseball, not really sure). Morningstar's 30 years old. He doesn't get the benefit of my doubt.

Dan Cook 10 years, 5 months ago

That will be the starting lineup. Nice work, KU08.

Ryan Wilson 10 years, 5 months ago

I agree with the players you selected, but i would start Releford of little. From all the rumors in practice last season it sounds like he's the most improved player on the team. Little will get solid minutes as well. Also Selby will start the PG spot because he's a true point guard and he was recruited for that spot. Though Taylor will bring the ball up as well Selby will start PG.

Starting 5 PG- Josh Selby SG- Tyshawn Taylor SF-Travis Releford PF- Marcus Morris C- Markieff Morris

Just my prediction based on all the coverage I've read. Should be a fun year though. Much faster game style without having a true center. Less High low and more alley oop

How about those Jayhawks on the grid iron! Looking like we could have a similar year to 08. Orange bowl and a Championship.

Rock Chalk Jayhawk KU

Martin Rosenblum 10 years, 5 months ago

It was sure nice to have finality to this. No father speaking to the media, no mixed messages between the recruit and his family, no theatrics outside of the announcement production.

Lamb's image bothered me frankly. I think he and Cal are more suited for each other. Selby is more our kind of guy. Maybe he and Withey will form a similar relationship as Sherron and Cole had on the court.

Jack Wilson 10 years, 5 months ago

Agree on Selby being more of KU guy. But that Selby/Withey "relationship" thing is a bit random ....

Martin Rosenblum 10 years, 5 months ago

But we're so used to the high/low game! It's been like Malone/Stockton for so long that It's still hard to imagine not having that chemistry in the future, ya know?

Jack Wilson 10 years, 5 months ago

dmku25/KU08: You ruined my night .. forecasting TT in the starting lineup. But I will leave the EJ thing alone for now.

That being said, don't each of you see a much higher ceiling for TRob vs. Markieff? Do you really want Markieff starting ahead of TRob? I want athleticism, hustle, energy .. TRob is all of that. Markieff is not a guy that runs the floor well. He does certain things well, like rebound. But his upside is not that of TRob.

And why the projection of Little over Releford. Did Little show anything in 08-09? I saw a guy in Releford that is a slasher, a guy who in the open floor can run and get to the rack. Curious as to why Little over Releford.

Lineup (push the ball, run, get to the hoop) 1. Selby 2. EJ 3. Releford 4. Marcus 4a. Robinson

Or choose KU08/dmku25's lineup, and go to sleep. Little/Taylor/Markieff? No way. This is our best lineup, with a strong dose of the assassin (Reed).

By way, KU08, totally agree on Morningstar.

KU08 10 years, 5 months ago

Ha ha, HEM. I just thought to myself, "How can I ruin HEM's night?" (kidding, of course).

My choices are for the early-season lineup. You know where I stand on Taylor getting a shot at 1, so no use going there again (unless you really want to). EJ was a TO waiting to happen last season, but I can see him taking the starting role from TT late in the season. Or it could be like Collins vs. RussRob in '08: basically split time with RussRob getting the starting job out of respect.

Little over Releford? I honestly have no idea why. The hype has been equally strong for both. Little had some flashes in '08-'09 but was inconsistent. What sticks in my mind is Releford constantly tripping over the basketball while trying to dribble that same season.

'Kieff over Robinson is another early season projection. If Robinson makes the expected Aldrich-like improvement his sophomore year, it won't be long before he gets the starting spot. I just think it will be fun to see the Morris twins playing together more.

My lineup puts you to sleep? Come on! Everyone on my lineup thinks he can shoot the three. We won't have a single offensive rebound next year, but it will be a lot of fun seeing every player beyond the 3-pt arc at the same time.

Kye Clark 10 years, 5 months ago

Little showed more than Releford did in '08-'09! And Little was doing it against Big 12 opponents while almost all of Releford's stats were accumulated against cupcakes!

Kye Clark 10 years, 5 months ago

Man, you've got the Al Davis syndrome. You could mail a tape of a guy running a 4.2 40 to Al Davis and he'd draft him #1 and start him at wide receiver without ever seeing him catch a pass. That's you. Athleticism trumps all. Higher ceiling. Upside. Nevermind the fact that TRob was a turnover (usually in the form of a travelling call) waiting to happen last year. You say Markieff doesn't run the floor well...I don't have a whole lot of memories of TRob out leading the break. You've gotten trapped by Bill Self and the announcers last year all bragging about TRob's "motor", kinda like everyone got trapped by Brady's reputation of "lock-down defender". Markieff already has displayed a tremendous capacity for improvement, now it's on TRob to do the same. If he does, maybe he pushes Kieff for the starting spot. I like TRob a lot, and I'm not opposed to him starting, but giving him a starting spot before he's earned it...again, it's like Al Davis just giving guys millions on athleticism.

As for Releford, sure maybe he can get to the rim in the open floor, but what percentage of possessions are played in the open floor? Even for teams that play fast it's far less than half. Little is a superior shooter/scorer and rebounder than Releford, and I'd bet a far better defender. Little at maybe 75% got minutes over Releford in '09, at 100%...no contest. If I had to guess, of the 13 guys I see right now fighting for minutes, Releford is going to be on the outside looking in. And now Terrence Jones is talking about wanting to make an official visit...Releford might just transfer.

I'm with you on Taylor. I think he had his shot last year and blew it. Unfortunately, my guess is that for whatever reason, CS will start him somewhere next season. It was pretty nauseating listening to Jay Williams talk about how great Taylor is.

Mike Kendall 10 years, 5 months ago

Great news--welcome Josh to the best playing environment in college baskeball--we have a long winning streak, you know? Where does this put us in the preseason rankings since we have Mr. Selby? I thought a week ago or so, ESPN had us at #15 or #16.

Sorry K-State fans---your "Octagon of Doom" doesn't cut it---we have our own Doom in Josh Selby! BOOOOOOYA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

tical523 10 years, 5 months ago

Great news, but I don't know why so many people (nationally, not necessarily KU) think that it is going to be Selby and Taylor for the dominant backcourt. . . . I really, really, really hope it is Selby and Elijah Johnson.

Perfect lineup in my eyes. . . . 1.)EJ 2.) Selby 3.) Little 4.) Marcus Morris 5.)? ? ?

There is goiing to be a lot of competition for minutes, I hope that it is healthy though. I would hate to see people get discouraged.

I cant wait!!! Rock Chalk!!!!

Jacobpaul81 10 years, 5 months ago

I have Kansas top 5 regardless of who we add. I think this team will be better without Cole and Sherron. They negated their defensive quickness and transition skills. I'm pretty sure Coach Self is thinking the same thing.

Selby just adds another piece to a pretty full pie. As a general rule, Freshman Guards, no matter how high their rating, are rarely as good as Junior Guards... especially 1s and 2s... and they almost always slump. With a team this deep, Selby likely won't start. He's going to be fighting with Johnson for minutes this season.

The Lineup I expect:

Taylor Reed Little Morris Morris

6th - Robinson 7th - Johnson
8th - Releford
9th - Selby 10th - Withey 11th - Morningstar 12th - Henry

KU08 10 years, 5 months ago

If that happens (Selby the 4th option off the bench), Self will never land a top-10 recruit again.

aerohawk 10 years, 5 months ago

I know right. If Coach Self was getting crap for not having a one and done imagine how the conversation goes if Selby isn't a starter, "Well, you could consider kansas, but you have to remember that time when Josh Selby went there and rode the pine for a whole year, so why don't you come to Kentucky. I know you will get playing time because I push my starting lineup off the team every year."

kranny 10 years, 5 months ago

Don't count out Woolridge. There is video of him scoring over EJ during AAU circuit. This kid can flat out score-28ppg this year, 31ppg last year, 20+ his sophomore year. VERY under the radar and Self's type of player-chip on his shoulder, willing to learn, and tough. His coach says he's the hardest working player he's ever seen.

dchon127 10 years, 5 months ago

  1. Taylor EJ, Henry
  2. Selby Reed, Morningstar
  3. Little Releford,
  4. Robinson Markieff or Markieff Robinson
  5. Marcus Withey

I really think Thomas Robinson will bulk up during the offseason and with the offseason program, he will have the type of breakout year Marcus had this year. Same with Withey, he was buried on our bench this year, but I think he will improve and have an impact as well. Next year, we will be able to play small ball or play big. Teams will have a tough time matching up with us.

Wooldrige may have to redshirt, and the only player I can possibly see leaving is CJ Henry.

tical523 10 years, 5 months ago

HighEliteMajor you are the man, I am just dumbfounded on the TT thing. I have never been impressed on the court (Oklahoma game last year flukish) and off the court the guy just doesn't get it. . . . . the complete opposite of EJ. But on another topic I really hope we don't get another recruit, we have enought talent for now and the next couple of years. God #!$% I am excited for next year!!!

Brian Powell 10 years, 5 months ago

"They run an NBA-type offense with pick and roll and pick and pop," Selby said. "When I get to the next level I don't want to be looking around [thinking] this [system] is different. I'll already know it."

Welcome to the show, Showtime!

He said 'God willing' only one year :( but with everyone jumping ship for the LEague this year, maybe one year is all we need??

I predict TT turns it around. I -hope- EJ gets quality minutes off the bench, but I have the feeling coach will still lean on Brady/Reed and now bring in Releford and Little more.

I agree that T-rob will have a breakout year coming off the bench for Morris'.

Trying not to get my hopes up for next March like I did this year, but should be an awesome season.

rcjh22 10 years, 5 months ago

Jones is gonna make an official visit!

nammyjignigh 10 years, 5 months ago

http://theshiver.com/2010/04/terrence-jones-says-hes-planning-to-officially-visit-kansas/

Sounds like Terrance Jones announced that is planning to visit Lawrence in the very near future and the Jayhawks are back on his list.

As for starting lineups/bench hierarchy:

PG: Taylor SG: Selby SF: Morningstar PF: Marcus PFa: Markief

6th Man: Little 7th: EJ 8th: Reed 9th: Releford 10: Robinson/Withey X FACTOR: Royce Woolridge

From what I've read on local Arizona AAU basketball blogs, this dude can light it up wherever he is. I would like for him to redshirt, but also don't forget he's played for the US U-19 team and did well. I think he's gonna play as much as EJ did this year.

I guess it all depends of foul trouble, or if anyone gets a DUI in the off-season. I know it will never leak out, but lets be honest. With the departure of Collins, Selby was all but guaranteed a starting spot. I just don't know if he'll start at point, but he will share duties like KU did in '08.

KU08 10 years, 5 months ago

Off topic: I'm watching half time of the Utah-Denver game, and one of the commentators is Avery Johnson. I forgot how much he sounds like a drunk Mickey Mouse. Great point guard though, or was.

KU08 10 years, 5 months ago

Does anyone know if Jones is a OAD-leaning player? I know I'm going to be flogged for this, but if he wants to go to the NBA after next season, he should just commit to UK. No post player has been able to master Self's system in one season. If Jones is patient and plays two years, Kansas is the best place for him to become a lottery pick.

tical523 10 years, 5 months ago

So Reed, Morningstar, and Releford are better or more effective than EJ who is our most athletic guard, and also a 5 star recruit with arguably the best attitude on the team???? Elijah gets no love from most and it is confusing. I'm not saying I don't like those other guys but to just assume he is going to take a backseat to them is just mindblowing to me. What am I missing?

tical523 10 years, 5 months ago

Really? I don't see that, especially after a year of EJ watching games, practicing, and the weight room. Get real.

Eric Schneider 10 years, 5 months ago

Just a guess but

Selby Taylor Little Twins

But the offense still needs to go through Marcus. He can just do too many things. And I'm sorry guys I just don't see Releford starting. Two years ago he was light years behind Mario. And Mario was playing at half-strength. At best.

Check out this interview with Selby after the game. I cannot wait until this guy plays at the Phog. It will be something special.

Thanks for the link. He seems really level headed. I like how he said if Terrance took an official visit to KU "it will be a done deal."

Before I read all the gushy-mushy comments, I just want it on my record that Josh Selby won't have a great impact on KU's 2010-11 team.

He will play some minutes, probably more as the season goes along. I doubt if he starts any games before January, if then. By March, I expect him to be established in the backcourt rotation of 4 or 5, and contribute at about the level Sherron did his freshman year. Better, even, than that would thrill me, but I don't expect it.

Probably not many on this board agree with me, but Josh Selby does, and coach Bill as well.

After a year in the program, the sky's the limit -- both for JHBB and Josh. At least two BigXII championships, as many BigXII tourneys, and about an even chance at one NCAA title would be my guess. Bigger and better could well happen, but so could smaller and lesser. Can you name as many as four other teams in the country with prospects that good? If I hear Calliope and Co. mentioned, I may laugh all summer.

Damn, it's great to be able to shout, "ROCK CHALK! GO 'HAWKS!"

dchon127 10 years, 5 months ago

I want it on my record as well that Selby will have an impact. He did not choose KU over UK, Uconn, Tenneseee for nothing. He could have easily gone to any of those schools and had a guaranteed starting spot for any of them. He will get a lot of playing time or why else would he have picked us? From watching the post game interviews from Selby and Jones, Selby sounds like he is heavily recruiting Jones to come to KU. Jones will be able to play the 3 spot on the wing , that'll be ridiculous especially since he is 6'8". I think Marcus and Mario will be our leaders next year. I am def. looking forward to next year. Can't wait for jones to visit and commit to us.

Andrew Moore 10 years, 5 months ago

From what I've seen, I think Selby is an instant impact plug'n'play type of guy. Starter from day 1.

He may or may not 'lead' the team, depends on the way our returning guys mature mentally and emotionally. I see him having a larger role than what X had, and X was the 2nd leading scorer.

Selby won't 'replace' sherron, but he will be able to fill the shoes admirably.

Big 12 champs? Yessir! National Champs? stranger things have happened...

Tony Bandle 10 years, 5 months ago

Observations from afar:

1] You don't put someone on your recruiting list unless they've moved into first place and you want to verify. Why bother with a second, third or fourth choice.

2] Josh Selby will see significant PT right from the start for one reason...he can do things that none of our other guards can do.

3] Next year..if the lock-out happens as expected... there will be no OADs in this class 'cause everyone will stay in school two years. That make UK very scary in 2011-12 but it makes KU even scarier!!

4] Add Ben McLemore to the list for 2011..his AAU coaches are telling other schools "don't bother". KU will be his choice.

5] Watch for the "Thunder and Lightning" team play from KU next year...the thunder of thug ball from the front line and blur of speed break from the backline.

lv_jhwk 10 years, 5 months ago

Regarding observation #4: now Coach Self has to do his part and offer that schollie.

Btw, have you seen him in person? I only ask because the highlight videos I see seem to show a low release point (barely above his shoulder) and am curious how accurate that is. I would be a bit concerned about a 6'5" kid who has the same release point as someone 5'10".

Tony Bandle 10 years, 5 months ago

Observations from afar [part II]:

6] Which will last longer...Cal's relationship with UK or Larry King's next marriage!!

7] Doron Lamb's quote on guaranteed playing time can be blamed on poor hearing.....HCBS was talking about Josh!!

8] Please analyze next year's roster if Terrence Jones does commit to KU.....I tried to but my head started to explode so I had to stop!!

9] Just got back from the St.Louis Cardinal/New York Met game, a 20 inning wonderland of lousy hitting, bad fielding, puzzling strategy and stupid baserunning. A game won by the Mets 2-1. Luckily, Kansas City never sees this kind of baseball! :}

10] If you had a Three Man Texas Tag Team Death Cage Match, who would win:

Rush Limbaugh, Ann Couilter and Bill McClellan versus Nancy Pelosi, Bill Mahr and Al Franken

Martin Rosenblum 10 years, 5 months ago

The Cage Match would end in a DQ. None of the people, with the exception of Pelosi maybe, could do physical harm to anybody - verbal abuse and slander won't win such a match!

lv_jhwk 10 years, 5 months ago

Close, memhawk, but you were wrong on one important detail...the match would never take place to begin with. Both sides would be spouting so much misinformation in the days leading up to the match that no one would know where to go much less when to be there!

Lacy Mohler 10 years, 5 months ago

Glad that picking a starting line-up won't be my job. I think we will see many different starting line-ups next season. Probably every line-up listed above. However, if Morningstar is required to play significant minutes next year--forget the final four.

Priest Fontaine 10 years, 5 months ago

Thunder and Lightning!!

Regardless of who starts I really hope Self plays a more up-tempo game next year with more than an 8 or 9 man rotation. I was just at the Garden watching these kids play earlier tonight and Selby is fearless. I too can't wait to see him along side Elijah Johnson and Taylor next year. Anyone that doesn't think Selby will have a huge impact on our team next year is either crazy or doesn't know basketball.

the beginning of season starting five:

1-Taylor 2-Selby 3-Little 4-Marcus 5-Markief

the "Thunder and Lightning" (end of season starting lineup):

Selby Johnson Releford Marcus Morris Robinson

other thoughts: -Rolls Royce's shirt should turn red this season. His time will come. -Hudy needs to transform Withey into a man like she did to Morris' -I'm glad we didn't get Lamb 'Tuckit' -We don't need Terrence Jones but I'll gladly welcome him as a Jayhawk!!! -Will be happy to see less of Morningstar and Reed this next year. Hoping Taylor and Elijah get it together. Not worried about Selby. -Saw an amazing highlight video on our 2011 likely recruit Ben McLemore and I'm blown away. Why is he not listed anywhere in the ESPN Super 60? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oIcfVs... -Also saw a highlight video on youtube of Selby that I hadn't seen before. Check this out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YEEGg_... -What's the word on Henry?

Kye Clark 10 years, 5 months ago

I posted a modified version of this yesterday, but it seems particularly relevant again today:

The way this team is constituted will ensure one thing: that we as KU fans wil be quibbling all off-season and all season long over who should play and who shouldn't. Who should be starting and who shouldn't. Who should see more minutes and who should see less. And unless they win it all there will be another off-season debate over how Coach Self mis-managed his personnel and how that cost us the championship. There's just no clear-cut drop off other than after Marcus. Almost everyone else you can make a case for playing over someone else. Even if CS expands his rotation to say...10 guys, there's still going to be that 11th or 12th guy. There will still be that faction of fans wailing away that it is because Jeff Withey didn't see more minutes. Or CJ Henry. Or EJ. If Selby plays 25-30 mpg and we don't win it, there will be those whining about "didn't he learn his lesson from X last year? You can't win starting some over-hyped freshman". Blah blah blah. Here's the roster, broken down not purely by position, but by perimeter players & bigs:

Perimeter (9) - Selby, TT, Tyrel, EJ, Brady, Royce, Little, Releford, CJ Bigs (4) - Marcus, Markieff, TRob, Whithey

(Yes I know Little could spell some minutes at the 4 and Marcus at the 3, just don't start).

There's 13 names up there, and if I ask 20 different fans to give give me a starting line-up and rotation of reserves, I might get 20 different variations. It's doubtful that CS expands his rotation as far as 10. If he expands it, 9 might be more realistic. There's no way there is a consensus as to which 4 don't make the cut. And now Jones is talking about making a visit! I'm no different that anybody else. I've shared my preferences before, and I think I'll probably throw my 2 cents in again here shortly. All I'm saying is that this topic will consume the message boards from time to time, but for right now it's all speculation.

There is no one definitive way to win a championship, but the '08 team did not have this issue. It was more or less a 7 man rotation, with Cole seeing minutes as foul trouble dictated, and Roderick Stewart seeing minutes early due to injuries, but largely just mop-up duty once everyone was healthy. Now try cutting that list of players for next year down to 7!

flankrin 10 years, 5 months ago

I just watched the Terrence Jones interview posted earlier, and he seems like a really great kid. He even mentioned wanting to visit on a weekend so he wouldn't have to miss more school.

YuCoJayHawk 10 years, 5 months ago

WELCOME MR. SELBY! Gotta like Bill Self and his recruiting style. But, I have to say I'm am quite surprised that so many of you don't think Brady Morningstar will contribute or start next year. I don't think Brady is all world, but he started something like 33 of 35 games in 09 and 9 of a possible 27 games last year. I would think that Bill Self knows the talent (defense, 3pt shooting) that Brady brings to the team better than any of us. Not to mention, Brady will be one of, if not THE most experienced Jayhawk on next years team, and the oldest player in the big 12. If Morningstar plays 15-20 minutes per game, that would seem about right for this team.

Selby Taylor Marcus Little TRob

That would be starting a senior, 2 juniors, a soph, and a fresh. Sounds about right with 2 seniors, a junior and 3 sophomores coming off the bench Morningstar Markieff Reed EJ Withey Releford

Wow, once again that is alot of players to spread meaningful minutes among. Not to mention you still have Woolridge and CJ Henry fighting for minutes.

David Howell 10 years, 5 months ago

KU62,

What were you drinking tonight ? Did you even watch some of the game when Selby was in ?

Of course he is going to play and a lot. It won't take long for Self to see that is he basically unguardable and he is relentless in driving to the bucket and makes things happen. At this point he might even be a better lob passer then Sherron was in his prime. Just imagine when he is running an offense with screens and motion and not the playground game going on tonight.

If Selby is the catalyst that brings in Terrence Jones then kudos to him big time. I still say we need one more BIG in our rotation. Withey is no sure thing, and we all know the Twins and TRob can and do easily get into foul trouble.

As for the '10-'11 rotation, who knows. TT for sure has to know he is on a short leash with EJ, Reed and Royce breathing down his neck. At this point I really don't forsee CJ and Morningstar being factors. Reed when inclined to can flat out score and his defense really improved last year ........ As for the Releford / Little battle at the 3 spot. Anything can happen, but I remember reading several posts on here that Releford had really been tearing it up in the intrasquad scrimmages and we all should be excited to see what he's got next season. Hopefully Little surprises too and we have a double headed 3 spot rotation with the hot hand.

Come on Bill, work your magic on Terrence Jones ! He wants to visit soon and sign before May.

jayhawker97 10 years, 5 months ago

welcome Josh "Dynamite" Selby to Phog's House! another shiny season in the making at KU! it's gonna be grreeeaaaaaaaaattttt!!

tophersdad 10 years, 5 months ago

I took a lot of crap last year when I said that we were doomed if Morningstar and Reed are playing significant minutes at the end of the season. If Elijah, Selby, Releford and Little do not progress enough to push those two into clean up minutes, we will be in the same place next year.

I, too, have given up on TT. That young man is so lost that it is difficult to watch. In the UNI game, my seven year old paused and rewound the game to show the guy searching the entire floor for his defensive assignment (the guy was right behind him). If you watch the press when the killer three happened at the end of the game, he left his assignment to go triple team what was supposed to be a trap. His guy leaked out, went long, and Reed had to guard two guys. He has skill but I am convinced there is not a basketball IQ to go with it.

There is a good chance that Releford is the key to this year. If he develops, along with the rest, we can tell nice stories about those two Kansas kids that are at the end of the bench. That is when I will have hope.

The bigs are going to be fine. If Jones comes in, do not expect him to be a difference maker from the jump. Mr. Robinson has the potential to be an absolute beast. Here is the line up if KU wins it all.

Selby Johnson Little Robinson Marcus

With Releford and (only in spurts) TT rotating on the perimeter and Markief and (hopefully) Jones at the bigs.

If you see a couple of Kansas kids taking minutes from this rotation, sweet sixteen is a stretch...

Jack Wilson 10 years, 5 months ago

Don't forget Reed off the bench .. he is the 3 point assassin that is a necessity. I would like to see Releford beat out Little, and then you have a freaky athletic starting lineup. Releford is a key to this coming season.

Jacobpaul81 10 years, 5 months ago

You guys crack me up.

A.) In 30 years, Kansas has started one Freshman Point Guard: Aaron Miles... a pass first, shoot second guard with good team skills on day one (and If I remember correctly, he struggled his Freshman year like all the rest.) All of the other Point Guards were backups. Why? The transition from High School to College is the hardest on Point Guards. They have to go from playing as the star scorer to running an actual offense. It takes most 2-3 years to make that transition. Selby is being called a very talented guard with scoring ability, but they are saying his team skills and offensive knowledge outside of simple run and gun transition is weak.

B.) The Junior year is the biggest transitional year in game play. The guards seem to just get it sometime between sophomore and junior seasons. See Vaughn, Robinson, Robertson, Hunter, Pritchard, for Kansas examples.

C.) How many players have we had rated high by scouts that have struggled to see minutes during a season? You guys see high rankings and you immediate think one and done. 99% of the kids who think they are going to be one and done's aren't.

D.) Use your heads. Don't get up your expectations. Let this kid find his place. He'll be lucky to see significant minutes on a team full of upperclassmen who know the system, who have more court experience, etc. He's got a lot to learn before coach hands him the ball and says "you're starting."

Benjamin Piehler 10 years, 5 months ago

also 8 out of the top 15 freshman last year went pro. and all of the top 5 went. pretty good odds. if you do research, you dont have to rely on expectations. that being said, id love to get more than one year out of him.

Jack Wilson 10 years, 5 months ago

Jacobpaul81: When was the last time a top 5 player signed with KU? You have to go back to Roy. X was like 6 or 7 last year on Rivals. I guess you didn't see Derrick Rose or John Wall? That transition was particularly hard on them. As it was on Willie Warren his freshman year, right? Too many to count, actually. Of course, there are some that bust or under-perform. But you do not recruit Selby unless you plan on starting him. Period. Top 5 guys are a bit different. In 30 years, Kansas has not landed a top 5 point guard (unless Vaughn was, which I don't know. I know he was McDonald's guy)

That all being said, I don't really dispute your logic. Even if he does start, I think a point that underlies your comments are that he may struggle and have freshmen moments .. it isn't going to all be peaches and cream.

However, you are really off base in saying "He'll be lucky to see significant minutes .." That is pure fantasy. X started all year as a freshman. You don't recruit top guys to not start them. If Selby struggles to see significant minutes, Self will struggle to get in the doors of top 10 guys in the future. Neither will happen.

Kye Clark 10 years, 5 months ago

All right, well I've said I'd give throw my 2 cents out there regarding the line-up, so here goes:

Starters Selby EJ Little Marcus Markieff/Robinson

Bench Reed Robinson/Markieff Tyshawn Releford Withey

This is my personal preference line-up. It's a wait-and-see game with Elijah, in terms of can he progress enough in whatever was lacking that kept him from seeing the floor last season to make the jump to the starting line-up next season, and do his abilities allow him to flourish at the 2 guard spot with EJ running the team. With Little, I think it's a no-brainer. For me, him coming off of a red-shirt season is almost like bringing in another big time recruit, only he'll have a superior understanding of the system, the ability to come in and defend, and the physical aspects - strength, conditioning, build, physical maturity - that all give him an edge over anyone else. The second post spot (after Marcus) is a toss up. I think right now you have to give the edge to Markieff, but wouldn't be surprised to see TRob starting at some point. Kieff saw significant minutes his first two years, so he is no doubt more "game ready" at this point. He is more of a threat in the half-court game and has a better shooting touch from mid-long range. He has also already demonstrated a tremendous capacity for improvement. Now it's on TRob to make the same kind of commitment this summer. If he does, it's possible he could find his way into the starting line-up at some point. I love TRob's game, so I'm hopeful that he can improve enough to push for 25 mpg or more.

I listed the bench players in descending order of who I think should get the most minutes, not by position. Many posters will list their rosters with a starting 5 followed by a second 5 substituting for the respective positions, but we really don't see it work that way. Reed is the team's only viable 3 point threat at this point, and its hard to envision a team having a great season without the ability to shoot from beyond the arc, so his specialty will be highly coveted next season. He also made great strides on the defensive end to where he was not the liability on that end of the court that he once was, although he still has some work to do. He hustles as much as anyone on the team. He should be the first guard off the bench. Then should come the 3rd post player, whether that be TRob or Markieff. Then, and almost unfortunately in my opinion, you have Tyshawn. Tyrel isn't a great option to run the point. If you start both Selby & EJ, at some point you'll need someone to come in and run the team, and Tyshawn has some experience in that area. After that you have Releford, who can spell minutes for Little at the 3 or slide down and help at the 2, maybe 10-15 mpg. Whithey sees limited minutes in the role of the 4th big, as foul trouble and match-ups dictate.

Kye Clark 10 years, 5 months ago

oops. meant to say "do his abilities allow him to flourish at the 2 guard spot with SELBY running the team"

tical523 10 years, 5 months ago

Holy Moly, that is a great starting lineup! I really think Withey may surprise people next year though.

Kye Clark 10 years, 5 months ago

He may. There's so much "wait and see" with so many players because of the 13 players we have only 5 have seen significant minutes (The Twins, TT, Brady, & Tyrel). So yes, it is entirely possible that Withey could surprise people and be a major contributor. Again, just my amateur analysis. Can't wait for next season!

Kye Clark 10 years, 5 months ago

Now I've left off some guys. Brady...sorry but his time should be up. We saw too much regression last year on both ends of the floor, and if he can't be counted on to hit the open 3 or play solid defense then it's not worth giving him minutes. Royce should redshirt. I think he can be a good player at some point, but he should wait to start the clock on his eligibility until after Brady & Tyrel have left (and maybe Selby as well). Spend a year in the system, learn to play defense, get your body in better condition, and come out for the '11-'12 season ready to help the team. CJ...his health issues make him too unreliable at this point. His best chance for playing time would have been at the point, and bringing in Selby pushes him further down the depth chart.

Now, this more or less my ideal scenario. However, if I had to guess, TT will start over EJ, and Brady will continue to see minutes and I think could push Releford out of the rotation. And now there's talk about trying to bring in Terrence Jones, so we'll all be doing this again should he decide to come to Lawrence.

tical523 10 years, 5 months ago

I also agree with this. Coach may have a tough time figuring up minutes. I love Big Bill but I hope he would not be hard headed and just play 8 players because that is what he want to do. Keep a guy on the court who is playing well, but he will need to rotate to keep people happy. I read someone else say playing ten players could be great for us, I think our players are the type that would not mind playing less if someone is hot that game but overall five and five rotation.

Kye Clark 10 years, 5 months ago

imho, 10 might be stretching it, or rather hoping for too much. The last 2 seasons it's been 8, and when we won the championship in '08 it was pretty much only 7. Not saying we don't have 10 that deserve minutes, but I think 9 might be a more realistic goal. I would say that in the '07-'08 & '08-'09 seasons it was a case of there being a significant talent drop off after that 7th or 8th player. Last year though I don't think that was the case, and we still only played 8, so expecting CS to change his ways too much...idk. Maybe I guess.

Priest Fontaine 10 years, 5 months ago

I'm sure CS knows best but if I had a vote we'd play a faster paced game this season and increase our rotation. This goes especially for the beginning of the season when we are playing against cupcake teams.

Selby will start next year. Maybe not right away, but he will start and see a lot of PT at the 1 and/or 2. If Jones wants to get immediate significant playing time then he should go to another school. If he is happy splitting time and possibly winning a championship then he should come to Kansas. If he is patient, he could be a star his soph year after Little and Boringstar graduate and Marcus possibly to the draft.

Would love to see CJ Henry stick with it. He can't be cursed forever with injuries. He's got a few years left of eligibility left doesn't he? If he can stick it out another year or two then he could be the man by his senior year and get a degree. I just can't see him competing with Selby and company this year even if healthy.

I wonder how many pull ups Reed will be able to do this off season? Last summer wasn't it 42 in a row or something?

Kye Clark 10 years, 5 months ago

First off, love the "Boringstar" blast. I try and reign in as much of my own negativity towards any players and just stick to analyzing their game, but that cracked me up.

As for CJ Henry, unless I'm mistaken he still has 3 years of eligibility left. If memory serves he was a medical redshirt 2 years ago at Memphis, so this past season he was still classified as a freshman. I agree that it would be nice for him to stick around, always a bonus to have a non-scholarship player that could actually make an impact. I think that's unlikely, but yeah it'd be nice. As for your statement "He can't be cursed forever with injuries." Go ask Wayne Simien.
