Xavier Henry to skip summer school, will report to KU’s campus in August

Incoming Kansas University freshman basketball player Xavier Henry won’t be attending summer school after all, coach Bill Self said Thursday.

Henry — who had his braces removed from his teeth earlier this week — needs a root canal and some other dental work and has decided to condition in his hometown of Oklahoma City with a personal trainer.

The 6-foot-6 McDonald’s All-American will report to KU’s campus in August with his brother, KU walk-on C.J. Henry.

“The most important time for him to be here this summer is first term when all the players are here. He’d have a hard time doing that with the situation he’s dealing with his mouth,” Self said. “We understand. I know he’ll be working on his own.”

C.J. Henry, a 6-3 guard who cracked a bone in his foot last year as a freshman at Memphis, is also rehabbing in OKC.

Carl Henry, father of the Henrys, said in a phone interview Thursday that C.J. should begin running next week and will be full speed when he reports to KU.

“One thing you have to remember about C.J. is the Yankees (who C.J. signed with in 2005) pay tuition for two semesters, not summer school,” Self said. “So he would have had to pay his own way.

“Hopefully he’ll be cleared (physically for full scrimmaging) in a month or so. They’ll both be here (in August) ready to go.”

Back in Oklahoma City, Carl Henry said Thursday he was fine with the decision of Xavier to not report to KU until August.

“I mean if it’s OK with coach Self, it’s OK with me. He told coach last night,” Carl said. “I encouraged him to go to summer school because everybody is there. But the way I look at it is C.J. and Xavier will be working out with the same guy who gets them in shape every year. Both will be in tip-top shape when they get to KU.

“I started watching the workouts yesterday,” Carl added of Xavier’s work with the trainer. “Xavier does three to four hours a day several days a week. They’ll both be in great shape.”

Carl said in weeks since Xavier’s April 23 commitment to KU, he looked into the possibility of Xavier playing in Europe for a year before heading to the NBA Draft.

That will not happen.

Carl said Xavier had a recent conversation with former prep standout Brandon Jennings, who, instead of going to college, played in Europe last season in advance of the 2009 NBA Draft. Jennings is expected to be a lottery pick. That conversation had Xavier a bit more curious about the European option.

“They (European team) could get him $1 million a year,” Carl said. “But he’s not interested in that. He needs instruction and you don’t get that overseas. Overseas they put you in and want you to score. There’s no talk of Europe at all. He and C.J. are 100 percent coming to Kansas.”

In a text message to Rivals.com, Xavier indicated he was sold on attending KU a year and there were no other options being considered.

Let me summarize many of the comments that will be posted below this... "THE SKY IS FALLING, THE SKY IS FALLING..."

Let me summarize what coach Self is saying right now.... " : ) "

I guess he's still smiling too hard to say anything just yet.

Jeff Hargate 5 years, 4 months ago

Why would Carl even mention the stuff about Europe at this point unless he was looking for headlines? I truely believe these 3 Henry's "could" be a huge distraction next year and beyond. Dosen't CJ have like a million dollars in the bank? Will the summer tuition of $1,500 break him? If he really wanted to be here he would be...and so would Xavier. On the surface this looks bad...

Ryan Wood 5 years, 4 months ago

jeff -- Maybe he was asked about Europe.

Mike Blur 5 years, 4 months ago

I took two sessions of summer school at KU, and I mostly remember the fine-looking women wearing "not much." So they're missing out as far as that's concerned.

I guess there are no dentists in Lawrence. The Henry Show began a long time ago and the saga continues!

Cmill1221 5 years, 4 months ago

Why are we being convinced in every story about this kid that he is in fact coming? i am in no was scared that he is not coming so why do they keep insisting that he is not going to europe, or back to memphis, or kentucky, or becoming a priest. Where does this stuff come from??

Cmill1221 5 years, 4 months ago

Jeffthejayhawk: he would be paying out of state so its more like 10,000 and he still needs to pay for living, book, and all that other stuff. but if he does have 1000000 in the bank than it shouldent be a problem.

Aligned 5 years, 4 months ago

I hate to be negative, but so far, everything I have read is about what's best for the Henry's. This is a team sport and he needs to be here for summer school to start building team chemistry, and also a reputation for being team oriented.

KANSTUCKY 5 years, 4 months ago

They must have Kansas confused with Kentucky were we really don't even need dentists. I brought my own teethbrush. I hope this kid is worth all the hassle.

mjlindsm 5 years, 4 months ago

Rush also didn't go to summer school before his freshman year at Kansas. He still led the team in points and rebounds and was a terrific team guy from day 1. I'm not worried about Xavier.

Jeff Hargate 5 years, 4 months ago

HowMuchRice, you know what I mean. If Carl did not want headlines he could have danced around the question, if that was the case. My gut tells me he knows exactly what he is doing and it is driving us all crazy.

If 6 hours of out-of-state summer school tuition costs $10,000 then I don't blame him. That's just stupid.

I know I sound negative, but all this is getting old. X better go 15-6-6 next season...

Dirk Medema 5 years, 4 months ago

Lance, or rather Mr Stephenson Sr., is noted in some places to be a much bigger headache. I'm with HowMuchRice - Carl probably just honestly answered a question that he was asked, especially in light of circumstances surrounding other (non-KU) recruits.

The summer won't be a big deal for them anyway. Both are getting their health together. Neither one needs to get a head start on classes to maintain eligibility during a lighter regular season class load. They've been on campus, and probably will be on campus during the summer as well. How far is it to Putnam City? Sherron and Cole are probably on the phone or texting them already figuring out a time for them to come up, hang out, play some ball. They've got a trainer, and CJ in particular knows what it means to be professional, so there are no worries of overcoming a HS attitude that other new recruits face. That being said, it will be nteresting to hear what they think of boot camp.

jayhawkerjoel is absolutely right. The sky is not falling, and Coach Self is tickled as all Jayhawks should be to have a pair of gifted 2nd generation 'Hawks on board. Maybe Darnell needs to hook the guys up with the OK City court where he spent all his time 2 years ago. It served him well, as well as everyone else that wears crimson and blue.

Rock Chalk

GeoHawk15 5 years, 4 months ago

Out of state tuition is ~$650/credit hour. I don't know what the minimum # of credits summer school athletes have to enroll in, but I seriously doubt it would be enough to add up to 10 G's. Besides, how much do you all think the Henry's personal trainer costs, when they could have top trainers more or less for free here on campus?

Regardless, I'm not on the worry wagon about the Henry's not showing up. Although I do wish they were here this summer to integrate with the rest of the team and show that competitive hunger and commitment for a 2010 Nat'l Championship run!

truefan 5 years, 4 months ago

Cmill1221, we are hearing the reassuring comments about them coming to KU because of a rumor about second thoughts that started to float around and was eventually posted on a thread at Jayhawkslant.com. Since the day that the thread appeared Carl Henry has had to dispute the rumor over and over because every reporter wants to know if it has any legitimacy. They are definately coming and they definately want to come. If Self doesn't care and isn't worried, then there is no reason for any of us to be.

canuckhawk 5 years, 4 months ago

"Carl said in weeks since Xavier's April 23 commitment to KU, he looked into the possibility of Xavier playing in Europe for a year before heading to the NBA Draft. That will not happen, Carl said."

Melosh wants to play in Russia?

Gee whiz Carl? Are you actively trying to get your kids hated in Lawrence? Are you trying to get them so they more popular in Columbia? Why would you say anything about checking out the options in Europe? Why would explore those options after finally committing to KU?

This situation is so silly. It has been up and down for a while, but lately, mostly down.

LAJayhawk 5 years, 4 months ago

Of course it would be nice for X and CJ to gets some reps and build some chemistry with the team, and it's a little disappointing that neither of them will be here. But setting that aside for a moment, look at X's situation from a school standpoint: he's not going to be graduating from the University of Kansas (unless he comes back in the off season from the League), hence summer school is a little pointless for him. So if he wants to spend his last summer AS A KID at home with his parents and his friends, I certainly understand that. I'm not particularly happy about it -- as I would like them to get the reps -- but I understand.

As to the Henrys in general, everyone needs to take a step back and breath.

In and out.

No other player is getting this kind of scrutiny. If you say they brought it on themselves, I would call BS. The actions and situations of the last couple of months have (mostly) been brought up by something out of their control.

Calipari left.

Not their fault.

Someone falsely acting as Carl Henry tweeted that X was unhappy and was leaving KU. A Kentucky blog picked it up, then everyone else followed. Now everyone is looking into every action they take as some sort of conspiratorial plan to evade coming to KU.

Again, not their fault.

But somehow because of all of that they are now "difficult"??

I don't understand this.

They had calmly selected Memphis amid the recruiting circus (blogs, reporters, "scouts," rabid fans) that they did not create nor encourage and over which they have no control. That decision was then torn from them by circumstances, again, beyond their control. After only a COUPLE OF WEEKS they selected KU, and yet people (including many on this site) hounded them for taking too long and trying to milk the spotlight. Now they choose to wait a couple of months before heading up to Lawrence -- something some of us may not have chosen to do ourselves if we were in their shoes, but, nonetheless, is entirely within the acceptable perimeters of an inbound athlete, a decision many other athletes have made before, and one that Bill Self, at least publicly, is perfectly fine with. Yet many people now call them [Henry brothers] "difficult."

I really don't understand this.

And, honestly, it is quite disappointing.

  1. We won't have brady to guard him in practice ANYWAYS.... so any lateral defensive learning we could have is limited.

  2. He is working out ( which we hope he is ....we won't know for sure until he shows up )

  3. Bill hasn't told him to go jump a bus. Which means bill still thinks he's worth it....

  4. He didn't break into any houses. Nor was his recrutiing tainted in anyway

What will really be "disappointing" is if it takes too long for the team to come together when it could have been done over the summer.

Most recruits who attend KU jump at the chance to get here and play over the summer...this, to me, as a KU graduate, fan and donor is disappointing.

Ten Excuses for X and CJ Staying in Oklahoma for the Summer:

  1. Know Mom will be much stricter with them in Lawrence than Dad will be in OKC.
  2. X working through a Summer of '42 experience; CJ trying to sort out feelings for a 42 year old secretary.
  3. Mistakenly believe there are more tornadoes in Kansas than Oklahoma.
  4. Fooled into believing Oklahoma has better barbeque.
  5. Prefer gardening in red dirt.
  6. Winter wheat allergies.
  7. Think the bootleg liquor from s.e. Kansas tastes better, when its been chilled on a barge in an Arkansas River lock in Oklahoma for a while.
  8. Have reason to believe terrorists will set off a dirty bomb in Desoto.
  9. Mistakenly believe Oklahoma has a Meditteranean climate.
  10. Everyone wants as much separation as possible until the NCAA's Memphis investigations clarify.

Note: the above is not meant to be taken seriously.

why is everyone being so hateful? when the henry,s get here they get here. quit with the neg. stuff. try to get billy gilespe the usc job. he can resign the players JC kicked of of the kentucky squad and get lance on board too. then beat kentucky this and every year.

You're a fool if you think this kid missing 6 weeks is going to make or break the KU b-ball team in 2010. By you, I mean anyone with that opinion. This team will be real good come late December so maybe it's time to start reviewing movies so you can have something to complain about or maybe look into a political blog so you could stay up on all of the conspiracy theories.

Why can't we give these guys a break?
It's a long season and looks like Sherron and Cole was more burnt out on bball than anything. Why can't these kids kick their feet up and take it easy sometime in the year. Like fishing, hunting, bowling, archery, reading, learning something new or anything that tickles their insides. Being an one track mine is not being real. Same with the football team. There is a season for everything and a season to give it a break.

I'm starting to feel a sort of Iverson-esque vibe from this Xavier cat. Don't be surprised if the next thing is him trying to find a way out of Bill's "boot camp". Has he even been in Lawrence since making his decision known?

Maybe T. Boone could slip Carl some stock or something and lure the boys to Okie St. I'm sure part of that deal could be that X could come and go as he pleases, show up for the games he wants to play in and maybe even get a degree after his first semester before declaring for the draft.

100 5 years, 4 months ago

Looks like the Kentucky posers have attacked the boards again.

I noticed one of them started up a Twitter page pretending to be Xavier.

Considering the NCAA's new rules is that legal?

Also noticed in the Lexington Herald UK basketball got caught with infractions today, as well as had to cover up some bad grades of a couple basketball players, presumably Meeks & Patterson.

So they get bored with their 3 weeks of daily bad news and come pose over here?

suttonku 5 years, 4 months ago

Wayward---

this is kinda funny actually...its all good though as long as he comes to play and is in shape then im fine with it but this will make it tougher on him to win the job at the wing...i have no doubt that he will win that position but this does make this whole henry thing more interesting...oh well though guys lets talk more about the awesome football season that is upcoming.

100 5 years, 4 months ago

The Lexington Herald has reported that the UK basketball team has been accepting free meals & possibly alcoholic drinks for the last two years at a local bar/ restauraunt, the players essentially popping in anytime they wanted.

Coach Calipari (JC!!!), being the smart wholesome honest coach he is, told his TigerCat team to stop going to this bar.

Obviously the NCAA will have a difficult time totalling the bill on this one -- with the way they were playing last year that sure wreaks of a lot of mint julips (about $10 a pop). Multiply that times a reasonable number (x)....

A rough estimate of UK basketball extra benefits (some illegal) over the last two years... $200,000

championhawks 5 years, 4 months ago

For someone who wants to get minutes this year, CJ doesn't really seem to care. I understand that he has a trainer at home and everything, but there is nothing like being at the school and developing relationships with the players and coaches, all while getting the treatment of a personal trainer still.

I don't really care either way because this team is bigger than these 2 and will be fine either way, but looking at it from CJ's point of view, you would think he would be there

Mint Julips? They should be sanctioned for bad taste alone.

You guys need to chill out. For the first time in years and for the last time in years, these guys have the chance to sit back and clear their minds – of basketball, of the spotlights, of school, everything. They've been through a lot and they haven't even played their first game yet.

Think about it. If they are prima donnas, do you really think Coach is going to give them minutes over team players? If Coach Self is okay with everything then there is nothing to worry about.

jaybate 5 years, 4 months ago

100,

$200K in gimmes the last two years?!

Now we know why Gillispie got canned.

The NCAA was on them like flies on Waste Management, Inc., and someone had to take the fall in hopes of preventing some really drastic penalties.

But then they hire Calipari?

Insane!

Our off spring got the crazy gene that has been latent for many prior generations in the family.

I smell big trouble for UK.

Perhaps even a perfect death penalty is brewing.

jaybate 5 years, 4 months ago

Regarding the Haskins wing of the Okie Baller Mafia:

First, Gillispie gets canned at UK in the midst of money give aways and recruiting investigations.

Now, Tim Floyd, who once enabled Larry Eustachy, gets caught running a crooked act at USC and gets canned.

Boys, boys, boys, to paraphrase a once famous country song: "Hank never woulda done it this'uh way."

And from what I've read, Don Haskins never woulda done it that way either. But who knows for sure? Fruit doesn't usually fall that far from the tree.

Oh, lord, let's hope Coach Self has been doin' it the right way. If he hasn't been, it appears the NCAA knows who's been naughty and nice. And the Brothers Henry will surely lead them to KU's door for a peak into KU's laundry.

I'm tired of hearing that this is their last time to sit back and relax. Like I said before, I don't care if they are at KU this summer or not, because this team is bigger than these 2. But stop saying that this is their last time to be kids, or relax, or whatever else people are saying. Being there in the summer still gives them their time to relax and goof off with the other players, it's not like they would be going through Boot Camp while they would be here.

I understand why X is staying home for his dental issues, and like I said I don't really care if they are at KU or not (obviously would prefer they were, but oh well). I'm just tired of hearing everyone make excuses for why they aren't at KU this summer.

treidy 5 years, 4 months ago

Carl Henry is a scumbag and I don't think very highly of his two sons either. Why would we even considering having these chumps at KU they are only concerned with themselves. I haven't liked these kids nor will I ever. It seems as if Carl Henry runs the show with these goons. Last time we had a dad that called the shots was David Padgett and we all know how that turned out.

You all might think I am being harsh but I am thinking about the overall program not one year or one player. Just my opinion.

MichJayhawk 5 years, 4 months ago

Treidy, I am a father, and my son is a solid athlete in 6th grade (works out with a Pistons trainer in basketball, shoots 70%+ from 15 ft., shot in mid to upper 70s last summer in golf, etc.). I don't expect him to become a star, but I would love for him to have the opportunity to play sports in college, whether it be a small college or large university. After reading comments like yours, however, I'm not so sure I would want him (or my wife and me) to be subjected to harsh, critical, non-informed comments like yours.

Please realize that, behind these stories, there are actual real, live, human beings with feelings. How would YOU feel to read comments like yours. Please grow up and show some respect!

jaybate 5 years, 4 months ago

MichJayhawk,

I agree that we need to be considerate of all the human beings involved, but it is unrealistic to expect uniformly civilized behavior towards players, either from the mainstream media, the alternative media, or the reader generated media. There just are jerks in the world. There were before the net, there are now, and there will be when the next communication revolution occurs when our brains are turned into bio-cell phones.

Don't let your child get anywhere near college, or even high school sports, without preparing them for the scornful opining that goes on. Not preparing them for it would be like Bill Self not toughening up KU bigs in preparation for the war in the paint these days. And it is entirely okay for a child not to play even if he/she would be quite good. Not everyone is cut out for public life.

Just posting here is an exercise in taking punches part of the time. Sometimes, it seems politeness and manners have been outsourced, as well as our jobs. On the other hand, some of the nicest, most stimulating persons I have ever read responses from come from this same board. I want wheat. I have to winnow chaff. Your son will face the same challenge, only more so, when he laces up the tennies at show time. Let him choose, then help prepare him if he chooses to play.

odc213 5 years, 4 months ago

OFF THE SUBJECT>>> which might be a good thing

I am hoping Damion James of TEXAS returns to school for one more year. Texas is projected top 5 preseason with his return. I think a stronger big 12 is better for KU. We need tough competition day in and day out for make a case/strong run as a 1 seed in the NCAA's. Sorry but Big 12 Norse with CU, KSU, ISU (even with Krackins returning) are not top quality teams to place TWICE in conference.

my two cents

With all of these twists and turns, Xavier had better be a STUD this season.

Have some patience next year is gonna be a blast.

LAJayhawk 5 years, 4 months ago

"With all of these twists and turns, Xavier had better be a STUD this season."

92% of the twists and 95% of the turns Xavier had no control over.*

*editors note: percentages above are approximate and should not considered an exact science. More over, lay off the kid for the love of all that is holy in this world.

MichJayhawk 5 years, 4 months ago

Thanks, Jaybate. I enjoy reading your posts--although there are times when I do skim over. :-) I appreciate what you say, and yes, there were jerks before the net, as there are now, and in the future. It's just so easy nowadays for them to hide behind a computer and post without any consequences. I guess it's a power play--one small part of their world they can control when so much of their own lives are falling apart in other ways.

I love your analogy about winnowing chaff--my grandfather was a wheat farmer in Kansas, no less. I guess Treidy's post just struck a nerve. I love to read this blog, but I rarely post--only when something goes totally against the grain. (Pardon the pun!) I so agree with you about preparing our son if he chooses to play. And, he is a huge Jayhawk fan, so it would be awesome if he eventually chose to matriculate at KU--not that I'm trying to live vicariously through his "tennies." :-)

I think it's reasonable to expext a kid to show up and work with his teammates during the summer, just like any other player on the roster. On the other hand, dental issues are pretty difficult to just ignore, and individual circumstances should rule over general rules about player expectations. Let's give the kid a chance, and let's also be patient with those that are impatient with X. I can feel their pain too.

ralster,

You really nailed this issue. You did not oversimplify. Self wants them here, but has to smile and put a good spin on things in order to try to fit the missing piece in his team's puzzle to give his guys their best shot at a ring.

Some top talent is unfortunately narcissistic. Billy Wilder, a brilliant director, was asked after shooting "Some Like It Hot" and having to put up with Marilyn Monroe's frequent failures to show up for shoots, how he could bear it? To paraphrase, he said Monroe had exactly what his movie needed and what she could put on a screen, when she could pull herself together long enough to do a scene, was something he could not get from anyone else. The movie was the thing for Billy--making it the best it could possibly be in order for it to do big box office was, no pun intended, paramount. Basically, Coach Self is saying something similar; that the team is the thing; that there is nothing more important than making it the best it can be within the rules. If Bill Self could get what X offers from someone else, someone who wanted to be with the team, someone who did not constantly make choices that made life complicated for Self, I suspect Bill Self would never give Xavier Henry a second look. But he couldn't find that person at this particular moment. Coach Self also believes he can work with a player and develop his sense of responsibility. Many great coaches do.

Of course coaches like Self also understand that players like Xavier (and CJ) can dally now and make him wait, but eventually they will come to school and then Self will be holding all the aces.

Put bluntly, if Xavier Henry does not perform adequately, or if he tries to cause trouble, Coach Self can cost Xavier can, with reduced playing time, translate these short comings into an enormous loss of cash by choosing not to play Xavier very much.

jaybate 5 years, 4 months ago

Ultimately, the coach, especially a beloved one with a long term contract, is in the driver's seat in this situation.

And Bill Self has already shown several times during his KU tenure that he is not remotely hesitant about marginalizing players who can't bring the ingredient needed that year (RR and Travis Releford their freshman years), or who can't fit in (Downs, Padgett), or who require attitude adjustments (Gidden, Giles), or who just aren't good enough (Thomas, Appleton).

My point in all of this is that since Xavier and his parents know that X's best chance to go OAD and be a Number One pick would be for X to be in Lawrence right now making Bill Self as happy as possible (so that Self is certain to help X as much as possible), then one has to infer that Xavier is not here for another reason than continuity of care with his orthodontist and preference for a personal trainer.

I suppose there could be any number of possible reasons that would explain Xavier's absence. I suppose there is a long shot possibility that the Henry's have learned of some possibility the NBA is changing its rule, or that there is a legal loop hole that might let Xavier go straight to the L. Or some European team might be waving a ton of green in his face and the Henry's want to quietly explore the possibility.

But until further evidence surfaces, I am going to place my gentleman's wager on a desire on the part of everyone involved for X (and CJ) to keep as low of a profile (and as much distance from KU) as possible until the NCAA investigations of Memphis clarify. If the Memphis investigation were to splatter mud on X and CJ, KU and Self would like to be able to say, "they were never actually enrolled at KU and as soon as we learned what happened they were told not to come to KU." For the Henry's, this also buys them time out of the spotlight of KU hoops in Lawrence to explore European options should the Henry brothers get splattered with investigative mud.

Of course, I don't know anything in particular. It is just a hunch and opining at that.

100 has been exceedingly on target on the Henry's actions and on Calipari's travails for quite awhile, it seems to me, and he seems sanguine that the Henry's are just approaching their summer in a way that ensures they are both in tip top shape. Another side benefit the Henry's may gain from being in OKC is that they are less likely to get involved in college pranks that might get blown out of proportion (bee-bee guns anyone?).

So: I suppose if I had to bet actual money, then I would bet 100's scenario.

But I don't.

If they show up in August and everything works out fine, are all of you still going to bad mouth them then?

X already has relationships with many of his new teammates through AAU ball and the like, and if he thinks he can better prepare under the tutelage of a personal tranier than playing pickup games each day, then so be it. It's not like the coaches are allowed to offer instruction along the way.

I figure we should just calm down and let things happen. If the situation is going to change and the Henrys wind up going elswehere, then I'd rather they not have been here in the first place.

Whether B Rush's not getting here until August was a different situation because he hadn't committed earlier and then spurned summer school, the fact remains that he wasn't here until August. He still developed good enough relationships with his teammates that he was able to be rather successful right away.

Sorry if this has been posted before, but is it normal for KU hoopsters to be on campus all summer? Not sure this is much of an issue until we can judge their on-court presence. In some ways the Henry's remind me of BRush and his brothers, obviously that worked out pretty well here.

Chicago_JHawk,

Some may be bad mouthing, but not most.

What I hear is this: some persons are questioning their commitment, which is hardly bad mouthing. Others are wondering if they are staying away to explore lucrative pro offers from Europe. And still others, like me, are also wondering if they are staying away this summer, because they may face some fall out from the NCAA investigations of Memphis recruiting during CJ's season on the Memphis team, and during Xavier's recruitment by Memphis? Again this is hardly bad mouthing.

So: to me, anyway, you seem to miss the point of the majority of the comments.

Of course, if they show up and fit right in everything will be great. And if they lead us to a ring, well, that would be positively stellar.

But the point of the majority of the comments is that that is probably not going to happen, in part because they did not have the desire, commitment and team spirit to join their teammates, when they could have, and perhaps (though there is no evidence of this yet) because they needed to keep their distances from KU due to possible adverse recruiting fallout from NCAA investigations, or to explore lucrative professional offers from Europe.

Perhaps the correct question for you is: what kind of behaviors on their parts would it take for you start to question their behaviors?

Does anyone have any inside information on the rumor of Harrison Barnes leaning toward KU?

jaybate-

Fair points. I made a generalization, but perhaps misspoke - a number of folks on here, like yourself, are discussing thoughtfully what could be possible reasons for X to miss summer school that go above and beyond what has been reported by Carl or Coach.

My issue is with the numerous comments that go along the lines of "We don't need this prima donna attitude." "Who does X think he is?" "Thinks he's bigger than the program." "He better show up and put up numbers right away or this won't be worth it." Those are the types of comments that irk me, the negative ones, the personal attacks, because nobody on this board knows any more than what we hear from Coach Self.

I usually take comments from the source at face value. When Coach says they'll be here in August because X is having some dental work done, then I believe that. I also question how much harm it has on the team chemistry. Not all incoming freshman show up for summer classes, and 8 weeks of pickup basketball with his future teammates isn’t going to have a huge effect one way or another on his development as a player here. If he’s more comfortable getting ready for the school year at home, then so be it. I’d rather he do it his own way. Am I wrong in my understanding that the coaches can't work with the players during this time?

I’d begin to question his desire and commitment if there was reason to suspect that he wasn’t putting in any work while he wasn’t here, but it sound like he will be. I don’t question him for looking at Europe…I would expect the Henrys to investigate that option. Why not? If he wants to be in the NBA after a year, why not get paid for that year if he can without hurting his development.

Chicago_JHawk,

I agree with you that those kinds of comments that you mention are off base. We need Xavier. And we need him at his best in order for KU to be the best this coming KU team can be. Same with CJ. Self would not have hung in so hard to land both of them, if they were not key pieces of the team puzzle. And I actually think CJ could make as big of a contribution as Xavier, if CJ too were to live up to his billing. It is very rare to land two guys that could step in immediately and not only create match up advantages against most teams at the 2 and 3 spots, but also two guys who could really pop the triceratop from those positions. Think about this for a minute. Sherron and Cole give us clear match-up advantages at the 1 and 5 most nights. Xavier and CJ could give us the same at the 2 and the 3 spots. This means match-up advantages at 4 of 5 spots on the floor. And Marcus Morris could well improve as a sophmore to the point of being a match-up advantage against most teams at the 5. This would be a monstrous starting five. And then add in that we have one or two credible backups at every position and you are talking about a team with the kind of abilities that some of the great undefeated teams in D1 history have had. 4 match-up advantages would be awesome. But 5 would "moiderize da bums!"

It is almost too good to be true that Xavier and CJ are coming. And I suppose some Jayhawk fans, me included, are wondering if it really is too good. Its a Midwestern thing. :-) If this were happening on either coast, the fans would be talking seriously about going undefeated right now.

Rock Chalk!
