Snyder tells crowd of K-State’s boosters he was Sebelius’ first choice to be her Lt. Gov.

— Kansas State coach Bill Snyder prefers football to politics.

Snyder told a crowd of football boosters in Winfield, Kan., this week that he was asked to be former Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius’ running mate in 2006. He said he seriously considered the job but eventually decided not to delve into politics.

Snyder’s comments were first reported by the Arkansas City Traveler.

On Friday, Sebelius confirmed that she talked to the popular coach about running for lieutenant governor after he first retired in 2005. But she said he was never officially offered the job.

“I talked to a variety of people about their potential interest and running for public office, and he was one of them,” Sebelius, now secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, said during a health care event in Omaha on Friday.

“He had been a good friend and supporter,” she said.

Snyder — who is in his second stint as coach with the Wildcats — said former Nebraska football coach Tom Osborne, himself a former congressman, and Kansas Sen. Pat Roberts advised him against a political run.

Snyder said his decision was sealed when Roberts told him that Sebelius would likely be offered a federal job if a Democrat won the White House in 2008, which would shift Snyder into the governor’s office.

Roberts’ office didn’t return a phone message seeking comment Friday.

Snyder made his remarks during Wednesday’s 17th annual Purple Pack Catbackers Golf Tournament and Banquet.

Sebelius chose Mark Parkinson as her running mate in June 2006, and he became governor when she was appointed to her Cabinet post earlier this year.

It's hard to decide whose insight is more challenged: Is it Bill Snyder's - when choosing between running a STATE versus running a football team, he picks the football team, and K-State at that; and of course, Tom Osborne talked him out of it - he only got to be a US Representative; or Is it Gov. Sebelius who picks Bill Snyder for the #2 job in state government based on his credentials, which, other than football are...? Or is it Bill Snyder's for throwing this story out there now (look for a retraction of sorts - my guess is he got confused on the offer).

She said she never offered him the job.

He says he was the first choice & turned her down.

Why would he say that to KState boosters if it wasn't true?

In related news - K-State and some non-mentioned boosters have agreed to pay every scholarship athlete a substantial stipend every year beginning 2012 through 2015.

Honestly, they should report what medication Snyder is on or better yet, how he plans on turning around a program that seems to not only be in a nose dive, but has enough equipment to dig a hole big enough to bury the entire university in.

WHO CARES ABOUT KSU?

Can we get some news on some new up and coming KU football players? How about some insight into our defense, the spread offense, how much Mangino sweats at practice, or anything else related to the 2009 football season?

Thanks!

I heard this was indeed true but Snyder saw that the legislature was going to lack talent for the next couple of years so he decided to pass on the job, just like when he bailed out on the football team a few years ago. Also, he was told that it wasn't possible to rename the Capital Building "Bill Snyder Family Capital Building" so he declined the offer! Oh that wacky Bill Snyder.................
