I know many of you are still resentful about Roy Williams’ decision to leave Kansas University men’s basketball for his beloved Carolina in the pines and his perceived destiny along Tobacco Road.
But that was nearly five years ago. Today Williams seems — to me, anyway — like an eccentric uncle who has moved to another part of the country, yet still surfaces from time to time in family conversations.
“Say, did you hear what Ol’ Roy said the other day?” would certainly have been one of the topics during Easter dinner.
North Carolina played its first- and second-round NCAA Tournament games last weekend in the RBC Center in Raleigh, home of the Tar Heels’ ancient geographic rival. No, not Duke. North Carolina State.
“Ol’ Roy wasn’t happy.”
“Oh, what didn’t he like? His team’s performance?”
“Naw, he didn’t like the logos.”
“The logos?? What logos?”
“The ones on the court. He said they were too slippery, that somebody was going to slip on one and get hurt. Said he’s been harping on this for years.”
“Was anybody injured in a logo pratfall?”
“No. But when somebody actually does slip on one of those things, Ol’ Roy will be able to say, ‘I told you so.’”
Say this for Roy Williams: If he isn’t the king of college basketball coach carpers, he’s definitely in the top three. Ol’ Roy is always jawboning about something.
To tell the truth, I wasn’t aware of his slippery logo-mania, but I witnessed his other logo pet peeve many times. This one began many years ago — in Dayton, Ohio, I think — when he was gigged by the NCAA for having a soft-drink can on the dais during a post-game media session.
Only paper cups with the logo of an NCAA sponsor — I won’t say which sponsor because you’ve seen those blue cups often enough — are permissible.
Williams tested that ban five years ago in Anaheim, Calif., when he ridiculed the Gestapo-like tactics of the NCAA by pouring the contents of an “unofficial” soft drink bottle into an “official” blue cup.
“Do I have to use NCAA ice, too?” Williams quipped as the assembled media laughed.
Then, as if on cue, an NCAA official walked up to Williams, handed him a cup of ice and, after he had poured the ice into his drink, the KU coach ceremoniously lifted the bottle in the air and placed it behind his chair out of sight.
More guffawing. Ah, those were the good old days with Uncle Roy.
Mostly, Williams’ jawboning was diverting fun, something to break the tedium of the interminable inane questions about his team’s motivation, confidence, frame of mind, approach, character, blah, blah, blah.
Yet Williams stepped over the line in that now famous interview with CBS’ Bonnie Bernstein after Syracuse spilled the Jayhawks in the ’03 NCAA championship game.
After Bernstein asked about the North Carolina rumors, Ol’ Roy used the S-word on live TV, then accused CBS of being insensitive. In retrospect, Williams should have said he was too overcome with emotion to comment.
Then again, Uncle Roy comments on everything. That’s what makes him such a popular topic at the dinner table.

He is a "popular" topic only to those LJW supposed journalists who just can't let it go. LET IT GO DAMMIT.
This is yet another display of a very poor topic. Evidently Woodling can't think of anything better to write than 'ole Roy.
PATHETIC.

I'll be glad to let it go. But only AFTER we've kicked Roy's butt back to Chapel Hill from San Antonio along with all his precious Tar babies.

He only "surfaces in family conversations" when you bring him up, Chuck.
Give it up, let it go. Forget Roy. We don't give a sh!t about Roy right now.

Roy's comments about never leaving Lawrence are very descriptive of his personality. He is all about the limelight. Every thing he does, he imagines he is on the cameras and acts accordingly. Everything he says is all about the camera. I have never been a Duke supporter but I am now. I follow their recuiting and their season. I root for them in every game. I want them to win the ACC or anyone but UNC. This is not because Roy left, but the way he left. When he saw the program falling apart, he caught the first train out. Bill Self had to come in here and rebuild this proud program. Roy lost heart and left just because he had a couple of bad recruiting seasons. He should have stayed but I'm glad he left. If he had stayed, we would have never gotten Bill Self. Bill was blamed for the two seasons that Roy wasn't willing to go through. Why is Okla. State still saying they are going to get Bill Self? Kansas needs to make sure we don't lose this guy. He is the best in the nation hands down. There is no way that he should already have the program back to where it is but he does.

Some of "us" (got to wonder about an article that starts, "some of YOU...") don't particularly resent Roy, nor do we think of him as a lovable eccentric uncle. He's much more like an ex.
You've seen it all before. It's neither charming nor grating, just dead and buried.

You'd think the love affair between LJW sportswriters and Uncle Roy would be over by now, but it ain't. NH_JHawk, right on. My only concern is how NC gets such honeymoon playoff assignments.

Actually, Roy is right about the logos. There have been many "slippages" on those things and serve no purpose. Who in this world is not aware that this is the NCAA basketball tournament? That giant logo in the center of the field is unnecessary and, yes, dangerous.

Let's concentrate on winning a two game tournament this weekend. Wouldn't an analysis of the 3 teams in the Midwest Regional be a more appropriate story that is more edifying to your readers, Chuck?

Man, do I want UNC in the Final Four. I'd love to watch Bill Self run a zone or some other grind it out method against "Ol' Uncle Roy" and watch UNC struggle. That would be sweet.

This column isn't out of place... Chuck is just prepping KU fans for a KU vs UNC matchup much like he would do if for a KU vs MU or KSU matchup. Bring on UNC we'll destroy them... the ACC is the most overrated conference other than the Pac 10.

Selfs defense would smother Roy's boys. Roy is a good offensive coach, but we never had the kind of defense with him that we have now. Let's just get there first however.

Memo to LJW staff. The appropriate time to write your next article about former HCRW will be when and if KU and UNCle Roy meet in the final four.
Please run as many articles as you like after KU dismantles his team and his inner tarhawk spawns an explosion of conflicted tears of sorrow and joy during the postgame interview.

Oh, don't worry, doctorWho, there's plenty more where that came from.
Seems to be a lot of disdain for Chuck out there. There's nothing wrong with this piece. Those of you who don't think that Roy is still talked about in KU circles are kidding themselves. Although LAJayhawk5 is right that most people don't talk about him in the ways Chuck demonstrated.

For what it is worth Williams did put up 418 wins, I believe second to Allen's 590.
This is what I find interesting. With 418 wins as of 2003, a coach of that caliber and years left could have easily continued, perhaps come close to the 590 wins set by Allen, and in a sense cast a large shadow for those that followed. Instead the guy bolts and will be judged within the shadow of Dean Smith.
For those that have forgotten it was Smith that forever was coaxing Williams to Carolina. SMITH IS/WAS A KANSAS ALUM AND THIS IS THE KIND OF RESPECT HE HAS FOR HIS ALMA MATTER?

2. If Kansas fans bleed twice as much college basketball than the wine and cheese crowd of North Carolina, and North Carolina fans bleed 100 gallons of basketball, how much do Kansas Fans bleed?
3. If I could give a sh!t 50 times less about Roy Williams than I could about North Carolina, and I care 0% about Carolina, how much of a sh!t less do I care for Roy Williams?
4. And if Bill Self > Roy Williams. Who is the better coach?

Honestly I am glad Roy left KU. He was a great coach, bad recruiter and a very self involved individual who only cared about ROY and his favorite players. He did not recruit in North Carolina or even near the east coast. Bill will beat NC in the final four so we all can enjoy that moment of NC/Roy losing to Kansas. The true basketball powerhouse.

From Seth Davis (for what it is worth). I'm suprised OSU isn't making a run at Coach K or Roy. Perhaps John Wooden will be feeling up to taking the gig at OSU.
On another Kansas-related note, I am still hearing that Oklahoma State athletic director Mike Holder is considering jettisoning Sean Sutton so he can make a run at Bill Self, an OSU alum. And if Holder can't get Self, word is he's deeply interested in Kentucky's Billy Gillispie. Why would Holder think he could pry away coaches from two of the most storied programs in college basketball history? Because he has Boone Pickens, the billionaire alumnus who donated $165 million to the Oklahoma State athletic department two years ago. I've heard some crazy contract figures being tossed around -- anywhere from 10 years, $30 million to five years, $20 million, which is tip money for Pickens -- but at the end of the day I have a hard time envisioning either Self or Gillispie leaving their current gigs. It would be a shame if Oklahoma State fired Sutton, who did a very respectable job this season under trying circumstances, all in a careless effort to buy a big-name coach who ends up turning them down.

Speaking of OSU, I was sitting with a couple of OSU fans at the Big 12 tourney and they told me that:
a - They want Sean Sutton to have another year to get things turned around and a lot of fans they know agree.
b - Bill Self would be an absolute idiot to leave KU for OSU.
Interesting that an article that nobody really cares about is one with the most comments on an article in a really long time.
Come on, its ok, you can admit it. You still have a spot in your heart for the ex don't you?

Congratulations, northleavitt, you have outshone Chuck by coming up with a topic that's even MORE of a dead horse. For God sake, how many frickin' times are we gonna hear about T. Boone Pickens courting Bill Self?!?!?!? Enough already! Let's worry about it if and when Sean Sutton is let go--and even then I'm not too worried about it.
As for the Roy situation, time does dissipate things a little. I'm not as bitter as I was at first, and I was never bitter enough to make things up out of my a** like fansincewilt. Let me ask you, wilt, where exactly do you get your information about Roy leaving as a result of poor recruiting classes??? Are you sure his leaving didn't have something to do with a solar eclipse or gamma rays or visiting Martians? They're about equally likely reasons.
Admittedly the WAY that Roy left was simply awful and wrecked what could have been a great moment for KU. But he left because his family had health problems, he was summoned back to his alma mater by Dean, and Al Bohl was still the athletic director at KU. Those were the three reasons he left, and those are pretty much universally acknowledged. Anything else is fantasyland.

actorman (D(umb)M... F...):
northleavitt, by suggesting that OSU should hire Coach K or John Wooden, was employing the use of "sarcasm," not reviving the topic for reasons of 'let's discuss, could this happen?' OSU is, apparently, as ignorant as, say, you are (for example) if they think they're going to walk away with HCBS.
Definition: [n] witty language used to convey insults or scorn; "he used sarcasm to upset his opponent"; "irony is wasted on the stupid"

You know what will happen if KU plays UNC? I gaurantee the refs will call three quick ones on Arthur and send Hanbrough to the line probably 15 times during the game. I hope we destroy UNC if we get the pleasure of playing them but something tells me that there are other forces at work when UNC and UCLA play.

kstatetraitor- You are right about Roy's recruiting. He wouldn't dare want to take a recruit away from his "daddy". He always said it was just because you can't get those kids to come out of that area. Well Bill has players from NY, Alaska, Florida, or Russia how ever you want to count that one. Next year we've got a couple from NJ. I guess your wrong again Roy!

It's abundantly clear that Actorman's reading comprehension skills are lacking. I will not, however, "dumb it" down for him in the future. The point of my prior post was that the Self/OSU issue is utterly absurd. And Seth Davis agrees -- he's pretty credible.
Given that Seth Davis' "blurb" appeared in his cnnsi column TODAY, it's actually not a dead horse. I pray that we get to San Antonio, but we are all naive if this "dead horse" does not become a mild distraction for Self. Particularly, if UNC makes the trip, which would certainly fuel the "pulling a Roy" storyline.

Everyone is missing the main thrust of this article and I bet Ol Chuck is laughing in his office as he knows he's successfully thrown a wrench in the gears. For whatever reason, Woodling of the LJW has an axe to grind with the University of Kansas. Perhaps its his Mizzou roots. Time and time again hes shown himself to be one who gets kicks from penning ill-timed, divisive articles. When we should be celebrating two tournament wins and are caught up in the revelry, Woodling is wringing his hands deviantly as his mind is wrapped around how he can be a thorn in the sides of the Hawk community and thereby rain on this parade.
Im not a conspiracy theorist, as many of you know. I resent implication and unfounded suspicion. But Woodlings track record of this makes me nauseous! I agree with the poster that says this article is out-of-place, as any hypothetical game with UNC is three games away. Not two. Not next. THREE GAMES! Before we would get to that point there would be a bigger story: Bill's cracking the bulwark that is the Final Four. THAT should be the story.
I like Roy Williams. He did a lot for Kansas. But he has his Carolina allegiances and I have my Kansas sympathies: if we play I hope we beat them by 100 points. But Woodlings ramblings are detestable. They come from a man who is obviously angry with his lot in life, and has nothing better to write about at tournament time than some irrelevant (at this point) piece that has no purpose other than to bring down Kansas and try to cause division.
You are SAD, Woodling. A pathetic little man.

A lot of comments on this one! Roy was great for KU but did make the right decision to leave. He looks like a distiguished professor with his Carolina blue suits and gray hair. I think he will have a long legacy in college basketball, but he will still more often than not have choking teams with bad free-throw shooting, so I will enjoy watching that in the years to come. Doesn't look like it will happen this year, though.

I doubt this post will survive the editors, but here's my imput. First, I am from North Carolina, and a true blue Tarheel fan. I once felt the same way that the people from Kansas feel about losing a good coach to another school. When Mack Brown left UNC as football coach to take the job at Texas, I was pissed. It was also because of the way he left. He built the team into a national power house, but I chose to ignore that. I admit, it took me a few years before I quit bad-mouthing him. When Roy came back home to Carolina, I finally understood. We, as fans have double standards. We would happily leave a job that is 1000 miles away to return to our home for the same amount (or more) money. We tend to put our sports programs in a different light. We dont' like our coaches leaving, or our players turning pro early. It is our own selfish reasons that causes our dislike of someone who wants a change in their life, is chasing their dream, or trying to improve their life. We should be wishing them well in the new challange they took, and appreciate what they gave to us while they were in our enviorment.

funspot: KU fans do appreciate the years and the success Roy brought to this fine university. However, it's the way that everything was handled that burns some people thin. While the KU/Carolina connection was cool in the 90's and it was fun to root for one another; The new century has a different take and in my opinion the feeling I get from most fans is that that connection has been severed.
What I don't get is the disrespect that the boosters, administration, Dean Smith, your athletic director, etc. etc. showed during the week leading up to the Final Four in 2003. We all know UNC had it's trouble in 2002 going 8-20 and then in 2003 going 19-16, but all those individuals I stated above could have waited until after the season or the following week to have leaked that story or made a decision with your basketball coach until after KU had finished it's season. It was a pretty classless move in my opinion and really ruined a good opportunity for KU to win a National Championship.
Roy had to do what he had to do, but Roy is about the most selfish person there is in coaching. Roy probably learned that from Dean Smith also because I could say the same thing about him as well. Yes, they come across as good natured personalities on the tube, but their actions in my opinion speak for their true character.
Who in their right mind comes to a 55 year celebration to honor a championship team for his alma mater and decides to wear a "carolina blue blazer" as his jacket of choice for the ceremony. Nothing like rubbing it in the faces of 16,300 fans who attened that game at Allen Field House.
I live in Charlotte, NC so my distaste for the ACC, UNC, and Duke has grown to extreme proportions over the last 4 years that I have problems keeping my blood pressure down. It's okay to have a good debate and talk about the success of an individuals university, but carolina fans always have their own methodical way to run down a KU fan. For that reason and my own mistake for choice in geographic location I have the utmost dislike for UNC. There is not one team in America that I root against more than the "ESPN NORTH CAROLINA TARHEELS". From now on I will always refer to UNC as the "ESPN UNC" because I'm sure UNC is paying ESPN a ton of money to be their affiliate.
Well, that's pretty much it, I feel pretty calm now after having written that. Have a good rest of the week and there will be nothing better than to see a UNC vs KU National Semis. For KU"s sake and my own personal vendetta against UNC, I want that game!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

funspot- Nowhere do you explain what Dean Smith DID and that is the real issue. I was using the restroom at the F4 and heard them interviewing Dean Smith asking "why are you here?" and Dean said "I'm here to support my alma-mater." The interviewer was not aware that he was a Kansas alum and I immediately had a sick feeling that Roy might be leaving at that point. I'm okay with it now because you have no idea what it's like to have a true, humble human being like Bill Self. It ended up being a good move for both programs.
Now to Roy... he was a great guy when he started at KU then he became a parallel of Terrell Owens becoming "T.O" when he made an unbelievable catch in the playoffs. Go listen to his interview with Dan Patrick on SI.com and it is apparent that he is now a fraud. He begins the interview speaking in his "over the top" fake politeness yet becomes his old backwoods self when he tells an actual basketball story that happened to him when he WAS a humble guy. Don't trash my post until you have heard the entire interview and be completely honest if you can comprehend the difference between who he WAS and who he has now BECOME. It's not that tough to hear the difference.
His humble background simply couldn't hold up when he became a star in college basketball. He became "T.O." after he transformed into one of the best coaches we have on this planet. I can understand how it happened but I no longer see him the same way.
One last story if you still think Roy is a great person. A newspaper reporter should interview our local ABC anchor in Wichita, Jeff Herndon, who received a message from good ol' Roy on his personal answering machine that was completely rude and inconsiderate after Roy mixed him up with another local guy named Jim Kobe. Roy was running late for a KU luncheon in Wichita and Kobe chased him down for an interview but Roy was not happy that Kobe was making him even later. That part is understandable. However the "mistaken identity" message left on Herndon's voicemail was elitist and completely baseless. The gist of the message spoke of how Herndon was a "nobody" and had no right to treat him that way. Roy had the wrong guy and never offered an apology.

I obviously missed the sarcasm in northleavitt's post because I forgot about his small first paragraph and focused on most of his post, the next paragraph--Hence the juvenile name-calling. (That's Mr. Jackass to you, LAJayhawk.)
But I also find it interesting that no one bothered to comment on my response to fansincewilt's ridiculous diatribe (the likes of which have been seen many times on this subject) about the numerous "reasons" that Roy left. Again I wonder where fansincewilt and people like him get their information that Roy's reasons for leaving include the fact that he had had a couple of poor recruiting classes.

Bill Self played the hand that was dealt him and never complained. The guys that stayed with Self learned to appreciate him for the man he is. If I recall correctly, Self ended up having to start a walk-on yet continually praised him. I don't remember him complaining once. He had great guys but how many were NBA caliber players? You don't get a better guy than Simien, yet he may have gone too high in the draft. Time will tell. However, I think the idea of poor recruiting classes was a poor choice of words since all those that stayed were absolutley great guys. They were a great team. I take it back. There's more to Self than winning a national championship. I will always think Roy bailed. He left a great group of guys even though promising them he never would. A couple of seasons of one and done were not Self's fault. I never heard one complaint or one comment that it wasn't his fault even though many fans were down on him. But I ask all those players to please disregard the idea of poor recruiting classes. They will go down as one of my favorite teams of all times. I will never forget that shot by Miles at Mizzou. Wow! There's much more to a team than winning a Big 12 or national championship. I was wrong letting my feelings about something that happened years ago affect what I think we have now. I really feel bad for those guys that went throught the transition. At the very least, it could have and should have been done differently.

I have not read all the comments on this thread, but I can tell you Pickens has already started trying to woo Self. They spoke earlier this year in a conversation that had Pickens offering Self a pile to the moon to come back home. The word I am getting is that Self politely declined saying the Suttons had done far too much for OSU for them to be so quickly cast aside. Since that call, I have heard that Self has met twice with people/supporters from Stillwater. Folks, Alma Mater is a powerful thing. I don't blame Roy for going home, and as much as I distain Stillwater, I couldn't blame Bill for trying to revive his old school. So be aware, the ball is rolling to try and get Self back at Gallagher Iba. Lets hope they win this year, and then it will be a lot harder for him to leave... or will that make it easier.. hmmm

Why would Self down grade his JOB...
When Roy left to UNC, it was a lateral move.
Why would Self wanna go to top 100 school from top 5 power house of basketball.
I'm sorry but being OSU being almamatar is not a strong pull that he will move. come on this time it is a common case.
Kansas = chance to be a legendary coach of all time.
OSU = Start all over again.

Roy is definitely and arrogant elitist, there's no doubt about that. Remember that whole flap when he yelled at the KU ROTC Honor Guard because he didn't think they got off the court fast enough after the national anthem?
What about him claiming WSU had cheated in their recruiting of Maurice Evans, simply because he couldn't fathom the Evans would choose WSU over KU.
My brother in law delivered a Christmas tree to his house when they were both at KU, and Roy was a jerk, bossing his wife and the kids around. He said it was very uncomfortable.
Great coach, though, but a jerk like a lot of those coaches.

fansincewilt, I'm not necessarily disagreeing with you about Roy leaving a certain lack of talent at KU when he went to UNC. I was mainly focusing on why Roy left. And I also have great love for the guys that had to deal with the transition. I will say, however, that I don't think you can pin the Bradley game on Roy's players, because that was Self's third year and it was a very young team. I think that had more to do with a lack of experience on that team than with a lack of talent. And don't forget that Self's first team came within an OT of making the Final Four, so the cupboard obviously wasn't TOO bare. I don't know if I'll ever understand the Bucknell season--not even so much the game itself, because the team had been playing like cr*p for quite a while before that so you could almost see it coming, but the last part of the whole season. I'm guessing a lot had to do with Langford's injury, but there was obviously a lot more going on than that. Was it players not getting along with each other, with Self, or what? Or maybe the players had just been overrated because of playing with Hinrich and Collison. Who knows, but that will always be a mystery.

When I think about the guys that were left, I felt terrible saying anything negative about them. I loved that team. I was very upset about Roy leaving them and misspoke. When I reread what I said, I take everything back. I am very sorry for saying anything negative about that group. They were gamers. Their coach left them and still they competed. I will never understand why their last season went the way it did. I guess it's just something that can happen. Who knows how that season will figure in their lives. They are wonderful guys. I just didn't feel they deserved what they got.

Roy is not an elitist, neither is he a jerk, nor is he a traitor.
Once again, kudos to the REAL Satan who is witness to and responsible for this incident:
CHUCK WOODLING!
Dude, youre an ass...

sewnerJhawk- Alma-mater can be a powerful thing so long as you are not going from the role of MASTER to the role of APPRENTICE. Self ain't leaving KU. It's ridiculous that people keep bringing it up.

Okay, you work at a job for several years. Due to your contributions, the company grows and does very good. You get pay raises, perks, and respect and admiration from your co-workers for the great job that you are doing. If you leave for another opportunity, you would receive thanks for a job well done, some disappointment from people who are sad to see you go, and employees wishing you well on your new posisition. Now, imagine, if you were treated like a coach in the same situation. All of a sudden, everyone hates you. They call you names. Everyone brings up every mistake you ever made. They hope you fall flat on your face. Plus, the comments are published in the news media. Five years later, everyone of your co-workers still hate you, and bad mouth you, only because you chose to leave for another opportunity.
I hope this never happens to anyone whose only offense is changing jobs. If you don't want these things happening to you, you should not wish it upon someone else. It amazes me that so many people dis-like Roy after all he did for KU basketball. Are all of you who are posting on this site, going to stay in the same job for your lifetime? Please open your mind, and let your hatred go. It is the only way that you can be objectionable.

funspot- Would you like to comment on that "great guy" Dean Smith? You can complain all you want about the opinions of KU fans about Roy after he left. I'm tired of "outsiders" like Dick Vitale and even fans of other programs telling us how we should act. Why don't they ever bring up the questionable tactics of Dean Smith? It's a ridiculous double-standard when you really assess the entire situation.
The way Doherty was treated at UNC was much like the NBA. The players were in charge of your program and had him run out of town. The one part I did enjoy was watching Roy shake them down when he arrived. What a bunch of loser human beings on that championship team! Doherty was such a great friend of good ol' Roy's that he had no trouble in taking his job.

I was one of those people upset when Roy said he wasn't going to leave and then did...but you know, we got somebody better than Roy and I couldn't be happier. I love Bill Self. I really, really, really love Bill Self and I hope he never leaves KU until he's ready to retire. It may be too much to hope for, but I can still hope. Regardless what the Jayhawks do this weekend, I'll still love them and I'll still love Bill.
Go Jayhawks!!

I am not complaining about the opinions that KU fans have. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. The main point is about how we have a double standard towards sports figures leaving their job for another one. It seems that if you look at it from a fan's point of view, their is a negative reaction. If you look at it from a logical , compassionate view, there is understanding.
There is much, much, more to the Doherty story. but it doesn't relate to this topic. College players do not get a coach fired simply because they don't like him/her. If that were the case there would be tons of coaches fired regularly. Still talking about Roy after 5 years isn't enough. Now you want to bring up Dean Smith?
One thing that would help me understand more, would be if if I could see archives of post to this forum when Roy was coach at KU. Would I see the same hatred in them as I see now?
I can tell from reading everybody's post here, and their reaction to mine, that it is hard for people to put aside their emotions on this issue, and it is completely understandable. And yes, you are right; no one should be telling you how to act.

Thanks Woodling. You're the problem. Not the solution.
Are you sure Keegan didn't write this one for you?

How can anyone not say Roy Williams is an arrogant SOB? It's one of the things that makes him a great coach. It is pretty odd that he cried after every loss.
Posted by actorman (anonymous) on March 28, 2008 at 2:34 p.m. (Suggest removal)
What's so odd about crying??? Roy's an emotional guy, he put his heart and soul into a team and they worked together like a family for months, only to see it end in (often) devastating fashion. And he knew that he would never have a chance again to win with some of those players.
I find it mystifying why so many people question and/or criticize Roy for crying in that situation. There are plenty of things to criticize Roy for, but that isn't one of them. And those who do criticize him for that show an incredible lack of empathy.

i was very sad that roy left for whatever reason that he did. espn was saying good things about KU and the program.
but any respect i had for roy went out the window when with 38 pts up he still had his starters playing. 100 pts? not an option. why embarrass the other team like that? roy proved he was a JERK!
