2008 KU-Temple
Doing their best Grinch impression, Kansas University’s men’s basketball team stopped Christmas on Saturday afternoon at Allen Fieldhouse.
Temple guard Dionte Christmas, who entered Saturday’s matchup coming off a 35-point performance in an upset of then-No. 8 Tennessee, struggled early and often in the Owls’ 71-59 loss to Kansas, going scoreless until the 1:51 mark in the first half and finishing just 6-for-14 from the field.
“They were just more focused than us on the defensive end,” said Christmas, a senior who rebounded to finish with 21 points. “... They did a lot of denying me the ball in the first half, and the second half as well. Those guys took advantage of that and just didn’t let me touch the ball the whole first half.”
Led by guards Tyshawn Taylor and Brady Morningstar, the latter of whom was responsible for shadowing Christmas throughout much of the game, the Jayhawks held the two-time Atlantic 10 scoring champion to just three first-half points.
Christmas attempted just four field goals in the first 20 minutes, and while he eventually got going late in the game — helping pull the Owls within two, 48-46, with 11:44 left in the second half — Kansas’ defensive effort proved too much to overcome.
In a game in which his team’s top scorer was taken out of sync early on, meanwhile, Owls coach Fran Dunphy looked for another of his starters — primarily center Sergio Olmos and guard Ryan Brooks — to fill the void.
Despite entering the game with five players averaging over nine points per game, however, Temple couldn’t produce a secondary threat Saturday. Forward Lavoy Allen finished with 10 points, but no other player managed to reach double figures for the Owls (5-4).
“They’re not going to let (Christmas) get too many good looks, there’s no question about that,” Dunphy said. “And we needed other guys to step up. We had a couple of good opportunities for other guys to make shots, we just didn’t make them.”
Temple shot just 36 percent from the field in the second half — 40 percent for the game — and was regularly forced into low-percentage shots and untimely turnovers.
In the end, Dunphy wasn’t exactly surprised by what he saw from the Jayhawks (8-2) defensively.
“We thought they would be real solid on defense,” he said. “And they were.”

Dugan,While the lead starts us on a voyage of a Dr. Seuss metaphor in explaining a KU win in which Dionte Christmas was shackled, it does not fulfill its premise in several ways.1. The Grinch pinched Xmas, it is true, but then he gave it back. KU stopped Christmas, but did not then give Christmas, or the game, back. This is a logical disconnection between the metaphor and the event.2. You lead with the metaphor and then do not build on it through the story. The reader expects you to build on it and wonders why you don't?3. Your closing graph does not bring the metaphor, or the story full circle. The reader is left unfulfilled. As a result of the above, your lead seems gratuitous, almost flip, rather than skillful and organic to your story. Sometimes the best thing to do, when confronted with the temptation of using an obvious metaphor, is to avoid it completely.Let me close with a relevant quote from "The Grinch Who Stole Christmas.""What if Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more."--Dr. Seuss

Regarding Brady:The picture of Brady jump shooting beside this story explains a significant bit as to why he can play D1 hoops. He can elevate on the J!

Out of how many photos of Christmas being defended that were taken yesterday you guys choose to post one showing Taylor fouling him? How it is that a paper so able to spin liberal propaganda into their "news" can't seem to manage to make the home team look good in the sports section?

I think the picture is supposed to make Christmas look like he is 'struggling' or being 'denied'...just a guess.

Agree soobawls. First thing I noticed. Uhh..Foul! MorningStar is making me a believer. I thought, 'man, a red-shirter is now a starter..???" Even though he gets his layups blocked, seemingly everytime, he generally is a solid defensive and offensive player and knows the system. And, it goes without saying, that he can knock down the trey. Morris Twins....Why don't they dunk more? These two are going to be beasts, and I like their tenacity, but dunk the ball, send a message.Little...man I feel sorry for this kid. I really hope he isn't plagued with these injuries. I haven't seen him play at all and with all his accolades coming in, I would suspect he's going to make huge contributions....love seeing the stats of the dudes in the NBA. Chalmers has made a nice transition. Cool!

Yeah,I am sure it is a vast liberal conspiracy to undermine the image Jayhawk students have of their basketball team thereby pushing the country to the brink of communism. Get a life, and a brain while you are at it.

The writer is probably not even aware that "Grinch" is a Dr. Seuss character, or even aware of the story (i.e, the Grinch giving back Christmas). What's the Grinch's dog's name .. can't remember. Maybe it doesn't have a name.Better caption. "Taylor hacks Christmas, leaving the Owls to die in the Temple of Doom." Ok, that isn't that good.Morningstar definitely played a better game. But he played 25 minutes and had just 1 rebound, at the 3 spot. Not the best on blocking out his man and getting to the boards. But he did make a number of good hustle plays. But the reality is that this team will not win the Big 12; or make a run in March, with a guy like him playing 25 minutes at the 3. I have to give the guy credit .. he is playing to the best of his ability and he deserves to be in the rotation. On the Morris twins, it may be as simple as they can't jump; or are not explosive leapers. Even at 6-8, you've got to elevate to dunk, or get the lob.

Just a rumor but I heard Hamilton is in trouble at FL State and, if he goes, Snaer might want out and come to KU. This coupled with another rumor that KU has turned up the heat in the pursuit of Stephenson. I am not sure if that is good or bad, but at least it indicates that HCBS is a bulldog in the recruiting ring unlike other coaches we have had.

BoulderHawk: Not sure of your point. It is "than", not "then", by the way. But if you're out in Boulder, you might be letting the granola lifestyle go to your head. I'm betting that the walk-on's turd is not more athletic than I am, though. Max .. poor little dog. The Grinch was so mean to him.

OakvilleJHawk,Interesting rumor about Hamilton at FSU. I've speculated before that Snaer was a payback to Hamilton from Self, who Self assisted at OSU pre-Eddie. I've also specced that Buzz up at Marquette was in the premix when Snaer reduced it to three, because he has Billy Gillisipie ties. Ever since Ben Howland told Snaer UCLA no longer needed him, Snaer narrowed it to three Oakie Baller programs, which always seemed an improbable coincidence to me for a kid from LA. So now you say if Hamilton gets the hook, then Snaer may bail and head to KU.This makes me lean even more toward my speculation.Snaer could help Hamilton keep his job. And Hamiltion has been on the hot seat. And if Hamilton gets flushed, then Snaer goes to either KU, if KU still needs him, or to Buzz at Marquette, or maybe even Billy G in Lexington. Recruiting of top talent increasingly seems a small world.
