KU vs. New Mexico State
Comparing a team as young as this season’s to one as polished as the defending national champion is as unfair as it is inevitable.
Kansas always strives to be the best basketball team in the nation, even when it returns just one player, Sherron Collins, who played more than four minutes in the 45-minute national-title game.
Nobody shies from expectations around here, and nobody makes youth-driven excuses. So it’s natural to measure this year’s team against last year’s. In doing so, it’s no secret where this one comes up short: front-court depth.
Vastly improved sophomore Cole Aldrich, a shot-blocker who scores in a wide variety of ways, dominates the defensive boards and delivers quick, long outlet passes, plays even bigger than 6-foot-11 and already ranks among the top centers in the nation.
But the search for a reliable sidekick continues. Freshman Quintrell Thomas had a very productive Wednesday night in KU’s 100-79 blowout of New Mexico State, but the long-term answer lies with one of two players who have more pure talent, higher ceilings than Thomas (10 points, seven rebounds in 17 minutes).
Starting power forward Marcus Morris and reserve Markieff Morris, more than anyone on the team, remain something of a mystery.
Both appear to be gifted passers. Markieff has a knack for blocking shots, but turns the ball over too often (seventh in minutes, tied for second with 15 turnovers). Marcus has a knack for hanging around the bucket to pick up offensive rebounds, but misses easy shots.
What remains to be seen is whether they grasp just how much intensity and attention to detail is required to play for a coach as intense and detail-oriented as Bill Self.
Also, just how explosive are they as athletes?
Aldrich handled the second question.
“They pick and choose when they’re explosive,” Aldrich said. “That’s one thing a young kid’s got to learn. You’ve got to be explosive every possession, and you can’t take possessions off.”
Do the twins dunk more often in practice than games?
“They do once in a while, you know, they struggle sometimes,” Aldrich said before cutting a joke. “I usually don’t let them get that dunk or the alley-oop because of my stellar defense on them.”
Aldrich establishes position with physical play and throws down dunks with authority.
“That’s one thing we want to do this year is attack the hoop like we did last year with our bigs,” Aldrich said. “Our bigs last year were freakishly athletic, with Sasha (Kaun), Darnell (Jackson) and Shady (Darrell Arthur). They’d go up, touch the top of the backboard and just go and slam one down.”
That sort of athleticism can’t be duplicated, but the effort and attention to detail can be. Lack of that led to Aldrich playing five first-half minutes, sitting with two fouls. Self took him off the hook for the second foul.
“Somebody else didn’t pay attention to the scouting report and put him in harm’s way,” Self said. “And that’s the whole thing. We’ve got to figure out a way to find that other big guy to play next to him who doesn’t do that. I don’t think we really gather yet the importance of having Cole in the game.”
The sooner the better.

The Morris Twins are just freshmen with "fresh" legs. I'm sure Self will get them into shape and then they will be crashing the boards more often. Dunking with more authority. You have to remember that Kaun and Darnell was seniors, they knew what they had to do. Shady was a 2nd year star that grew into his own, he didn’t show upside till the end of his freshman year.Time will tell what the twins will be able to do toward the end of the season. They will have alot more muscle memory to help them and practice experience.

Yeah the Twins should be held to a high standard and so far they are getting bullied and miss the easiest shots in the world! Right under the basket and it's incredibly frustrating. They are supposed to have East Coast toughness? I believe in them still and had high hopes coming but so far Tyshawn Taylor is the only one that has lived up to the hype. The twins are skinny and get pushed around. At 6'8" you should be slamming that ball!!!! Just nuts. So far they have been disappointing. Another word that comes to mind, unfortunately, is lazy. They are VERY athletic but there is no excuse to repeat the same story game after game after game. I don't know how much more I can take. It's almost funny how many easy shots they miss!

jchief40: Let's be honest you (and I, for that matter) would vomit 5 minutes into a Bill Self practice. So I don't think you have any standing to call the twins lazy. They are trying to adjust to Div. I college ball. Give them a break. Now, if their development mirrors that of Eric Chenowith come their junior seasons, let the criticism begin.

First off, I commend Keegan as this article is completely and totally true. I enjoyed reading it. I know it's early in the season and we are only 7 games in.......but the Morris twins are making me nervous. They do play extremely soft. We all have to remember the schools that Taylor and Thomas went to. Those two schools are tough. The schools that the twins went to......everything just came easy to them. I was hoping that Marcus Morris would be what Corey Brewer was to Florida a couple of years ago. I'm down on them, but have not given up all hope. Isn't it amazing how much different this team plays when Cole is on the floor. That kid has GOT to stay out of foul trouble when we play the better teams (Michigan State, Tennessee, Arizona and the Big 12 conference). The big problem here is he is our ONLY experienced big man. The twins and Thomas are only freshman and they just don't quite get it yet. Lastly, lets not forget the one key guy that hasn't even stepped on the floor yet......Mario Little. Based on what I have read, this kid plays bigger than his size. And if that's true, we are in for a treat. He's needed! The question is......who's minutes is he going to take?

It will be February before Mario Little is seriously cutting into minutes. His conditioning must be horrible by now. Eventually (if he is the D1 player we hope he will be) his minutes will come at the expense of Brady and Reed.

Let us give the Twins a break. I do not remember Cole being a great player in his first seven games last year. Let us not put Cole at the same level as Wilt as yet or the Twins at Dackson or Arthur's level. Cole is a good player but he is learning. He is making some silly mistakes, too. Where was the logic for Cole to pick up his 1st and 3rd fouls 25 feet away from the basket? When he tries to defend 25-30 feet from the basket, he exposes the Twins more. I agree that the Twins need to be more aggressive on the offensive end but we are not missing them on offense as yet. Sherron, Tyshawn, and Cole are doing a great job on scoring.

It's a much tougher adjustment for bigs to come into the college game than it is for the guards. Aside from a month or two of DI practices and a handful of games, they're still very new to this level of play. Give the twins a break. I think they've shown some nice flashes and hustle. I love how they're capable of pulling down a rebound and pushing the break a bit (shades of Wright come to mind). I do wish they'd stick to the philosophy that if they look down and they're feet are not on the blue of the lane, they shouldn't shoot it. To call them lazy is completely off-base. They work very hard underneath, get their hands on a lot of balls, make good (yet sometimes ill-advised interior passes) and as soon as they adjust, I think they'll be a formidable duo alongside Aldrich. The turnovers will fade and the finishes will increase (and become much more authoritative). Go back and watch early film of D-Jack and Shady - not overly impressive (very similar mistakes and "softness"). A lot more pressure is put on these two early in their careers and it's just a matter of time before they start living up to all the hype (a la Taylor - unbelievable performance last night by the way).It can't be easy getting put in your place every day in practice by a superior upper classman (but look at the wonders last season did for Cole). Cut them some slack.

When we talk about the twins everyone needs have faith in Bill Self's ability to develop players. He knows how to handle young talent. Just look at Russel Rob. Self knew how to break him down (almost to the point of transferring) and then rebuilding him into a pro player. KU's work out regimen will put meat on the twins eventually. Just imagine a D. Jackson body on the twins... Scary

Cut the twins some slack. And all of the freshmen for that matter. They are freshmen and they have played only 7 games. The twins don't have the luxury of coming off the bench as backups to veterans while they learn - like Cole did. Hold your comments until next year.

derekprater - I was saying lazy comes to mind. Not that they are flat-out lazy. I say out of ALL the players that get regular minutes the Morris' are both dead LAST when it comes to agressiveness and giving 110% every posession. Dead last. And I wouldn't be so hard of them if it weren't for their hype coming in. They were recruited to make a major impact and they come off as the type that can get pushed around. Puss-like effort down low dude. I am not saying they won't correct that. But it's incredibly baffling given their height and athleticism.

Distracted - I agree with you on the Twins' ability to push the break and their above average ball handling skills given their size. Again, I am not off-base by saying lazy because even though they are not purely lazy in that sense - not coming up and defending and giving easy paths to the bucket is indeed a LAZY mistake. Lazy efforts to the bucket is why the ball isn't in the hoop. If they are not aggresive to the bucket they are lazy to the bucket. Don't get caught up in "lazy" to describe their work ethic in practive. Not lazy players - lazy plays. Sorry I even said it now but you all better realize now where I am coming from and shut it. :)

The untold part of the twins story is that they are really triplets. The other member of the threesome being Kieth Langford. This is a great rebuilding class. We have two of the countries best guards in Collins and Taylor. Our starting center Aldrich will be an All American. With some great coaching from Self and Manning the M&Ms will get better ever week and throw in Little and Thomas for a front line that will play with power and athleticism. Not to mention Reed and Morningstar who are solid backups. This is going to be one of our greatest teams who at some point should have a shot winning it all.Let's see Wilt, Manning, Pierce, Jo Jo White and a player to be named later. Maybe one of these guys.

First, Keegan, this year's team IS the "defending national champion." I don't think you can compare a team to itself. That said, I get your point and I agree. We were spoiled last year with an amazing Front Four. To have Kaun and Cole come off the bench was such a huge advantage. When Cole picked up his second foul last night (PAHAWK1 -- on the money. If he's going to pick up a foul, at LEAST use it up inside!!!) and went to the bench, the entire game changed. He is a difference maker. That said, although I do agree Cole can dunk with authority, I think he, too, doesn't do it nearly enough. Too many times, he tries to put it in off the glass and he gets stopped or it dribbles out. just throw it down, cole!! Same goes for the Twins. But they'll learn.sdoyel -- good point about the redshirt for Little. I wonder if that's an option or being discussed??

jchief40: A little sensitive are we? I disagree with your assessment of "lazy plays" as well. How can you be so sure that it's not more of the learning curve? The twins still have to think their way through every possession and can't rely on the years of practice that, say, Arthur and Jackson had. Perhaps you should try a little more thought and empathy before you go around slandering guys who (I would comfortably speculate) work a lot harder than you do on any given day.

Chill people. It's a reloading year and the kids gotta learn. As the old saying goes...the best thing about freshmen is that they become sophomores. Cole had the advantage of playing against 3 bigs that got drafted in the NBA every day in practice. He was able to make pretty good strides, but he still takes dumb fouls. He's still learning too.The Morris Twins will be alright, they just need to learn how to defend. I just think that when you're used to being the biggest, most dominant player on the court in HS, it's a HUGE adjustment to Division I ball when there are several players your size or bigger.

This is all hooey by a coach trying to get some frosh to grow up fast. If you got Self alone over a beer with no reporters or players around, he would say this team is playing waaaaaay better than he ever dreamed it would at this point. I mean think about what the freshman are doing! He's getting 15/10 out of the Twins almost every game. Whenever Thomas is not too confused to play, he gives 8/5..Cole, the grand old sophmore, is throwing up 15/12 almost every game. This years group of bigs is almost certainly outproducing last year supposedly stellar bigs over the same number of games. Last year, we were always wondering if Arthur would stay focused for more than a half. Kaun was a complete bust at this time last year. Kaun was a complete bust until the last month and a half of the season. DBlock was steady, but often could not get into the offensive flow. The guards often outrebounded last years bigs!! People are already forgetting how much trouble last years GREAT team had in the early going getting it together, even with all the veterans. This years team of frosh plus Collins and Cole are playing a slightly better schedule, which in a few weeks will have been way better, AND playing without Little, a guy who was supposed to be their lock down defender. Last years GREAT team had to do without Rush early, but they had a totally veteran team to depend on. I think this year's team is playing absolutely kick ass basketball given their age, strength of schedule, Little's absense, and how physically weak frosh bigs always are in the upper body. At least the Morris Twins bring whatever they have every game and don't cry to the coach to let them be back-ups. At this same point in Darrell Arthur's career, he was begging Bill Self to make him a back up. Talk about a sissy. The great Darrell Arthur who carried us on his shoulders against Memphis, was so confused and beat up by this stage of his freshman year that people were wondering if he'd ever get back off the bench. Really Arthur was a disgrace except for a couple games the first half of the season. DBlock never played as well as a freshman the entire season as Quintrell Thomas already has. Kaun did okay as a frosh. He carried the mail first half of the season, but he quickly went south after that. Overtime he got to the point where the only thing he could do was post defense. Couldn't rebound. Couldn't score. We thought he was absolutely pitiful for awhile. I'm telling you: these freshman are outmanning most of the freshman bigs of the Self era for sure. Get Coach Self away from the reporters and the players and he would grin and say, "Heck yes I'm jerkin' em around in the media. They're doing great. They're waaaaaaaay ahead of what I was expecting. Heck, we've got a chance to put up a good W/L AND go deep in the tourney. That's why I AM riding them so hard now. But don't tell them that."

I agree with jaybate... This KU team is way ahead of what most people expected, probably even more than Coach Self thought. Are we are comparing last year Senior Forwards to our Freshman Forwards this year? Of course the Freshman Forwards are not as good as last year Forwards. The Twins and Thomas are showing excellent signs of being great players. Taylor even shows signs of being a great freshman guard but makes freshman mistakes. Collins is performing like we expected, Alridge and Reed are playing much better than expected. Morningstar is a complete surprise on how well he is playing. And possibly the best newcommer on this team hasn't even played this season. I saw Little play in the Junior College Championship Tournament last year, he was very impressive in the post. Basically he is a 6'5" power forward who can shoot anywhere on the floor. I believe he will end up starting over Brady Morningstar but will mostly play in the post. He will be the sidekick Alridge is needing in the post. Once Little is healthy to play, I doubt we see Teahan, Releford or Appleton play much this year except for the clean up time at the end of a blow out game.

Nice, jaybate--my sentiments exactly. Didnt the 4 bigs from last year's team have a small issue with rebounding early last season? Didnt their "manhood" get called-out by Self? True, they responded magnificently...This year, we actually have 4 athletic bigs, all of whom had played alot more pre-college ball than Kaun or Jackson did, so naturally, they are farther along. I get tickled silly watching the Morris twins dribble a fast break up the floor (good thing, shows skills) which was a rare thing for bigs last year. Of course, this means someone else is breaking to the basket in transition--I would rather it be the bigs. This team is looking better than it should, but it would be rare for someone to come out super tough as a post-player as a mere freshman (unless they are a man-child). Not impossible, but rare. Im not worried about the Twins--come on--its early. Shady as a frosh was tentative and very unsure of himself, but I will not be critical--he improved and gave us the smoothest 20/10 you (n)ever saw in the Champ game. The current bigs are getting knocked around in there--toughness will solve itself. And like Jaybate said: you add their stats together, and you've got 15/10 (to equal 1 Cole), and that's pretty good production in the paint (32/20). And you've got 10fouls between the two. And they've shown a super-cool penchant for making inside passes to each other real quick--cant teach THAT kind of chemistry this fast can we? Some of those are turnovers, I know, but that will get better, trust me. I am seeing the same flashes of brilliance that jaybate & others here are, and I am sure Self is lovin' this progress. The guards are very productive as well. My biggest concern was: where is the scoring going to come from? Well, thats been answered already: everybody! It is the same offense, fed by the defense, and the kids love playing it (anybody can score, depending on the circumstance). Fun.

Hopefully Little with progress quickly like Taylor has. I love how hard Morningstar plays, but we need a more talented 3 gaurd to start. The Morris twins will continue to progress and get tougher, especially if they don't want to lose playing time to Thomas. They have the "tough guy" attitude, but they need to integrate it into their game.
