Massachusetts Street was quiet Saturday night as Kansas University football fans reeled from a loss to the Missouri Tigers.

"We're thoroughly disappointed," said George Brahler, a 21-year-old KU senior and Lawrence native.

Brahler might not have seen the victory he wanted, but like many other fans, he said he is proud of the team's success this season and looking forward to a bowl game.

"I haven't seen KU football do this in my whole lifetime," said Patrick Harmon, 18.

The Lawrence native braved the cold down to the final seconds of the game at the outdoor watch party at Ninth and New Hampshire streets to cheer on his team.

"Todd Reesing is still my hero," Harmon shouted with one minute left in the game.

Alisha Ashley, a KU graduate and Lawrence resident, joined in his enthusiasm.

"Eleven and one is an excellent record," she said. "We're still one of the best teams in the Big 12."

P.J. Neary was heading home with his head still high on what he called a "historic day in the greater Kansas City area."

"It's been a hell of a year," he said.

The Tigers couldn't take away the spirit of Michael Folendore, a KU senior from Orlando, Fla.

"We've got a good bowl game coming," he said, "and they can't take that away from us."

These guys have it in the right perspective. KU still had a great year. They may not have national championship talent, but they played like it most of the year, and they are overachievers to be 11-1.

Still, you gotta wonder if we'll ever have another team as good as this one...

Of course we will. This is just the beginning with Mangino's recruiting and coaching skills. Besides if KSUck can claim a football dynasty (in their own minds) after a decade of winning (with no NC and only 5-5 in bowls to boot) after being a football embarrassment for their university for many decades, then KU should have no problem. Mangino has brought football pride back to Mt. Oread!! We Jayhawk fans just need to learn how to respond to it now.

We MUST keep Mangino at all cost. It seems everytime we get a coach that starts to build something he bolts for greener pasture. Lew, lock him up, make him a lifer!
