KU collapses yet again

Posted Sunday, October 22, 2006

— It’d be amazing if it weren’t so ordinary.

Kansas University’s football team painted another masterpiece of futility Saturday, blowing an 18-point, fourth-quarter lead and falling, 36-35, to Baylor at Floyd Casey Stadium.

It’s almost comical now. When Baylor gained possession with 2:43 remaining needing six points for the victory, it was pretty clear what was about to happen.

And, by golly, if it didn’t unfold exactly by the book — the way Jayhawk football is played this season. A 10-yard touchdown pass from Shawn Bell to Dominique Zeigler with 1:08 left gave Baylor the one-point lead.

It was the Bears’ third touchdown in the last 9:22 of the fourth quarter. Needing 18 points to catch Kansas and its 35-17 lead, the Bears got 19. It’d be amazing if it weren’t exactly what KU fans have seen for a month now.

That’s four games in Big 12 Conference play. Four second-half leads. Four meltdowns. And four losses in four tries.

Oh, yeah, and quarterback Kerry Meier left the game at the beginning of the fourth quarter because of a shoulder injury. If that isn’t Kansas football, what is?

Saturday’s loss could be considered epic, considering how quickly Kansas was thoroughly conquered with just enough time left. But so could the last two setbacks — losses to Texas A&M and Oklahoma State when victory was right there for the Jayhawks to take.

So let’s just call it ordinary.

“I really felt like we sort of lost our edge going into the second half,” running back Jon Cornish said. “We weren’t really coming out to win, we were trying to keep our lead. There’s a lot of key mistakes in the second half that just wouldn’t happen if we had been mentally ready to play in that situation.”

It’s the first time any of the Jayhawks said what has been theorized the last four weeks — that Kansas doesn’t win because it doesn’t play to win late, instead playing not to lose once a lead is established.

Coach Mark Mangino talks about the game against Baylor

Kansas (3-5 overall, 0-4 Big 12) looked terrific in the first half, scoring 35 points behind a running game that Baylor couldn’t stop. Kerry Meier had a 12-yard touchdown scamper. Jon Cornish had two touchdown runs and hit the 100-yard mark in the second quarter.

In addition, the Jayhawks forced two big turnovers that led to points. Arist Wright returned an interception 28 yards for KU’s second touchdown, and a Justin Thornton forced fumble recovered by Jake Schermer set up the Jayhawks’ third score.

Kansas led 35-17 at halftime, showing frustrated fans a glimpse of how KU football can be played if only the heads are on straight.

It was just a tease. The second half came, and the Jayhawks crumbled under the late-game pressure once again.

“If I had an explanation,” KU coach Mark Mangino said, “we would’ve corrected it awhile back, wouldn’t we?”

Kansas appeared to play keepaway after halftime, holding onto the football for 10 of the 15 minutes in the third quarter and almost nine of the 15 minutes in the fourth.

Despite all the time of possession, KU never ventured into the red zone in the second half and really only had two good chances to score — a Marcus Herford pass on a trick play was overthrown, and an Adam Barmann pass to an open Herford was dropped. A field-goal attempt after Herford’s incomplete pass missed wide after an imperfect snap.

Baylor woke up in the fourth quarter — or was it Kansas just falling asleep? — scoring on Shawn Bell touchdown passes with 9:22, 4:42 and 1:08 remaining. A 35-17 Kansas lead vanished like they so often do.

Meier’s injury was nothing more than kicking a dying dog while it’s down. On the last play of the third quarter, Meier scrambled right and was tackled by Baylor cornerback James Todd after an eight-yard gain. After a minute lying on the sideline, Meier went to the bench and was seen shaking his right arm, staring down at his feet in obvious frustration. He missed three games earlier this season due to a shoulder injury suffered against Toledo.

“I don’t know if it’s a re-injury,” Mangino said. “It’s the same kind of injury. Same place.”

That seems to parallel KU’s struggles anymore. Same kind of loss. Same way.

The Jayhawks will play Colorado next week in yet another attempt to salvage a season swirling down the drain. Just a month ago, it was believed that Kansas had an excellent chance to go to a bowl game for the second straight season, a feat the program never has accomplished before.

But four losses by a combined 21 points somehow bring with them the feeling that Kansas might be toast in 2006. Bowl-eligibility? They need to just win another game first.

“How many times is this going to happen?” Cornish said. “Going into the fourth quarter with the lead, and we blew it.”

It’s beyond amazing. It’s really just the way things are anymore.

The fact that there are no posts at all says it all. KU fans have given up on this team, and rightfully so. This is ridiculous. It says a lot that Cornish admitted that it seems that this team came out not to lose rather than to win in the 2nd quarter Saturday. Bottom line, this coaching staff blundered away another win. People can say that the coaches don't play the game, but the head coach, off. cord., and defensive cord. play a key role in stopping momentum. It is obvious that our defensive cord. must have had that deer in the headlights look Saturday when Baylor mounted their comeback. I am sorry, but when your program has as many Big XII wins as Baylor does for the history of the league, that is not progress. I think everyone just remembers how really bad KU was under Terry Allen, but the W-L record in league play isn't much different under Mangino.

I think Mangino has been given 4 years to build the program. In my mind, if the program was really going somewhere, we would have at least a .500 record on the road. We do not. It is time to cut ties with Mangino. He and his staff must go. Thank you for getting this program back on track, but your staff has failed to provide the winning attitude that is necessary to take this program to the next level. Mangino and his staff must go. It will be interesting to see the turnout on Saturday for the Colorado game.

One other thing, Mangino mentioned that if he knew something was wrong, don't you think he would've fixed it? That's the problem Coach Mangino, you and your staff don't have the ability to see what is going wrong and do what is necessary to alter your strategy to counter what the opposing coaches are doing. That sir, is the main problem on GAMEDAY!

Say what you want about Glen Mason, but at least his teams were tough! You would think that these wusses would get ticked off at getting embarrassed like this every week! Nick Reid, Kevin Kane and Banks Floodman have got to be punching holes in their walls when they hear how far their once-proud defense has fallen! Maybe we should have Nick Reid have a "talk" with them. These guys need to be men and step up and make plays! Marcus Herford makes the wide-open catch and scores, we win the game! If the same Marcus Herford doesn't over-throw our wide open receiver in the end zone, we win the game! Even if Marcus Henry catches the sideline pass for a first down with a little over a minute left, we in all likelyhood, would have run out the clock and won the game! The defense is porous on pass defense .......everybody knew that going in. I guess I thought our guys were tougher mentally and physically than they really are! My old coach used to ask what the score was at halftime. If we didn't answer 0-0, we didn't play.
I like Coach Mangino and he has built up the team from those dreadful Terry Allen days, but this year has been a step back! Coach needs to recruit tough players and build toughness in the players already here.

It is time for KU to bring Bill Snyder out of retirement and wouldn't that be a great story?

Posted by wwwd (anonymous) on October 22, 2006 at 9:15 a.m. (Suggest removal)

jayloco said it...Mangino and his staff don't know what's going on. Remember Toledo? He didn't even know his QB was injured. A "coach" would have known.

nikesasquatch, I hate Grandpa Snyder but maybe you're right...if he can recruit great players to a place like Manhattan and get them to wear purple, just imagine what is possible here.

The talent problem is good! Mangino has done an excellent job recruiting talent. The problem is that the coaching staff doesn't know what to do with it. And my best guess is the defensive coach. He seems to have an excellent coaching 'education' in defense, and he has learned the wrong thing. Cover Two. There are more games lost on cover two than on any other coaching failure. Watch last minute losses in the pros. Failure of cover two.
They don't get the point. Prevention, Cover Two -- are absolutely certain guarantees of failure.
If you must stick with cover two, the 'territories' have to overlap, badly! But cover two is poor organization. There are 5 potetial receivers and 6 or 7 potential cover guys. They need to play 'Cover Two' with a strong man-to-man orientation. Take your man, get in position. Keep your eye on receiver movement. If he is going thru your zone, pass him to the next man if he is available. Otherwise stay with him.
Unfortunately, we have too many guys covering the cover-zone with NO receivers in the territory. And inadequated coverage of inadequate 'territory' with the receivers in between.
You don't have to be a genius to understand that you aren't getting receiver coverage!

djks28, you are an idiot. So I guess all those years when KSU sucked, it was best just to give up on their program and stop trying to make it better. Ya, you're right, they never got good, never went to good bowls or to post-season consistently. MU, they should probably go ahead and chuck the rest of the season because they're never going to be good either. Tell that to their players. I'm as frustrated about the football program as anyone, especially when looking at our schedule this year and next. With Baylor, OSU, and A&M in the south, KU better get things figured out by the 07 season because then we get OU, TX and Tech for two years. KU is young, our secondary stinks and our D-line is not putting any pressure on the QB, not to even get into some of the coaching decisions! The kids play the game but the coaches make the calls and so far, they have proven to be incapable of stepping on the opponent's throat when they have the lead.

Hard as it may be some times, we need to continue to stand by our team, the players and the program. Those will always be here, whereas, coaches change. KU can get back to being in a bowl consistently but it will take a credible coach who can rally his players and find a way to stop opponent's momentum and put a game away when given the chance!

This is very simple. The only aspect of the KU football program that has improved in the coach's control is recruiting. The facilities improvement, the investment in the program is Lew Perkins not Mark Mangino.

The fact is under Magino's watch (or lack of attention) this program is on probation, the team has lost several very winable games and has blown second half leads due to poor coaching and poor play calling.

Secrecy and lying by Mangino to the media and to the fans on Hawk Talk is inexcusable. Bob Knight may be a nasty man and my poke fun at the callers to his coach's show and to the media but he never lies. Mangino did not know his QB was hurt in the Toledo game and then told the media he would be fine. He said after the shredding OSU put on the secondary that there would be no personnel changes, yet there were two new faces on Defense Saturday.

It is time that Lew take the $1.5 million he has available for a head coaching salary and go after someone who knows X's and o's and can coach in game situations. If Mangino wants to stay on as the recruiting coordinator - all the better, but he needent be calling the shots for this program into the future. I believe many alumni agree with me andwill vote by not going to any more games. Their support of the Williams fund will wane and this discussion will be academic becaue there will no longer be any funds to support any program.

When the Journal World publishes the attendance next Sunday tell it like it is and say how many butts there are in seats rather than how many tickets were sold.

It is not all the defense, it was the second-half offense as well. Cornish's comments tell all. If the offense would have played with the attitude of going for the throat, making big plays, more time would have been used and the defense would not have had to be on the field for most of the 4th quarter. The offensive coordinator is screwing up these games with the overly conservative play calling in the second half to try to protect leads.

How you guys liking that PAY RAISE NOW????

Complete loser coach.

agreed, that pay raise was a joke! Bye bye Mangino! You can recruit alright, but you also have to get them to play to their strengths. Perkins won't stand for losing this way anymore!

funny, you're all the same fans who will be crowing about how amazing it is that we're becoming a "football school" while singing mark mangino's praises if we do well again next season. just go watch basketball and let the true kansas fans tough it out with the football team. only those of us who stick it out through thick and thin, no matter how hard it may be, are the ones who can truly appreciate a good season anyway.

jfos4 speaks the truth. That guy is not only an idiot but is an embarrasment to the University and the state of Kansas. The University shouldnt sell him tickets to sporting events. Anyone that is content with their school having a poor football program is a loser-period.
I know this season has been a disaster, but guess what, next week Im going to be in Lawrence rooting the boys on. I cant wait to see what that loser thinks when we clown KSU when they come here in a few weeks.
Rock Chalk Jayhawk!
And look at the bright side soon KU will be on national tv every week on comedy central!

stacey, you misconstrue criticism with giving up on the team. I have always supported KU in all sports, and always will. That doesn't mean I can't be angry and frustrated when they choke games away time and time again. There is simply no excuse for doing the same things over and over and over. I don't see the slightest signs that this coaching staff has learned from their mistakes, or that they've made any adjustments.

When a team does the same thing game after game, that is a reflection of poor coaching. And whatever happens next year (assuming Mangino & Co. are even back, which is a major assumption at this point), that won't change the fact that this team could EASILY be 7-2, or at least 6-3. What they have done in the last month is nothing short of pathetic.

im as mad about this as anyone but with the exception of the o-line and cornish this is a very inexperienced team. i agree that they should have learned by now and should be given up 400 yards of pass offense/game. but yea, first basketball game is less than a month away!

Have fun at a division III school next year MANGINA. YOU SUCK

Posted by RonBurgandy (anonymous) on October 22, 2006 at 4:43 p.m. (Suggest removal)

People can say whatever they want, but the bottom line is all these late game collapses fall squarely on the shoulder of the head coach. It is hard to blame the coach for a single game meltdown, or even a couple throughout the season. But when there are five of them, it is a reflection of the coaching staff. Mangino has been getting better talent to come to KU, but he is not calling the correct play or providing the best advice from himself and through his coaching staff to keep the players motivation and focus moving forward.

Posted by sadkins11 (anonymous) on October 22, 2006 at 7:24 p.m. (Suggest removal)

It is kind of difficult to get the players to respond to a coaching staff (not just the head coach) that they absolutely despise. Although they should've been able to come together as a team in the past couple weeks despite their negative feelings towards the coaches, it just doesn't make it any easier when players don't respect those who coach them. It's a big problem that is evident through our record.

There is an awful lot of Mangino bashing going on here. Many are saying he can recruit but that the program and wins/losses are not following. However, when was the last time we beat Nebraska or were competitive with teams like Texas A&M, Nebraska, Texas, etc? We are complaining about choking away games that we were actually LEADING in the first place. We are clearly capable of competing with most teams in the conference week in and week out. I agree that the playcalling has been conservative once we have a lead and that we seem to play "not to lose" instead of to win, but it isn't Mangino who controls the defense, allowing Oklahoma State to set their school record for passing against us. It isn't Mangino who allowed Baylor to set their school record for the biggest comeback. We lost a stud corp of linebackers and several d-line starters from last year. We obviously haven't recovered from that, evidenced by the inability to stop people from passing on us (can't pressure QB, DB's not keeping up with WR). I promise you no one is more frustrated with Kansas football than me this season. I was a student at KU in the worst of years (late 80's with Bob Valesente as coach). The psychology of the 4th quarter is definitely a factor now as players are going to be waiting for the other shoe to drop... almost anticipating something to go wrong. No bowls this year. Hopefully, we get some LB and DB help in recruiting (even if juco transfers) for next season. For those of you calling for Mangino's head, fear not... he probably wont' be around much longer. He's a heart attack just waiting to happen.

Stacy been attending fB games since the Pepper Rodgers days, I have seen a lot more thin than thick. Honestly two bowl games buys the big guy another year or two, but the way we have lost this year has simply been horrible. It is embarassing, and if you are not embarassed you do not care about KU fB.

I have always doubted Mangino's ability. Ever since Phillip Rivers went wild against KU's secondary in the Tangerine Bowl I have expected the same problems to continue. Mangino has had plenty of time to recruit his own players to this point and Phillip Rivers would probably have an easier time tearing up this secondary than the KU secondary he did thrash. Mangino must go.

Posted by nikesasquatch (anonymous) on October 22, 2006 at 11:29 p.m. (Suggest removal)

It is almost comical watching the Mark Mangino Show following these losses. Mangino is calm no matter what happens. KU could never win under Mangino again and he would remain calm and still say that the secondary is showing signs of improvement.

djkc28-wow man, that is a terrible statement you made above. Accept Mediocrity? That is ridiculous and as others have pointed out, take KSU as a prime example. There is no reason, given the funding and willingness of the program to succeed that it can not be a top 25 program year in and year out.

jayhawkstacey-this has nothing to do with whether people are fair weather fans or not, this has to do with calling it like we see it. Mangino has consistently shown that he does not have the ability to win close games. Bottom line is if you are good enough to get up big on a team in the first half, you should be able to do enough to hold on and win in the 2nd half. Mangino and his staff's inability to adjust after half time is what's killing this team. He should be thanked for getting the program to this point, but it is time to go get a coach that can coach the X's and O's and is adept at making the necessary half time adjustments to insure victory

alright guys, i should have given a little bit of substance to my argument i suppose.... living in connecticut now, i haven't gotten to watch too many games this season, so i can't totally comment on anything other than what i've read on the team this year. but this is how i see it: we're seriously competing with every single one of these teams. we all know that we could (and probably should) be 8-0. you can't say that about any of terry allen's seasons. in my opinion, that means that if you tweak a few things, we're going to start winning ball games. people argue that the big 12 was stronger in the terry allen days, but i think there's just more parity across the board now than ever before.

i totally agree that it shouldn't take this long to figure out what the hell is going on, but i still have the faith that mangino's going to get his act together and put a better product on the field. i am just as embarassed about this football team as all of you right now, but i truly believe that mangino can (and hopefully will) snap out of this funk and get us to our second straight bowl game this season.

I have not given up!! However we have little talent in the defensive backfield. Mangino can not implant talent into a kid. We have given opposing QBs career days all year long. Did you see Grothe (So. Fla.) playing Cincy yesterday? They had dbacks and he did not do anything. OState and Baylor have career days throwing....come on these schools suck right now. We just do not have the talent in the dbacks.

Offense: coaches have to get these kids playing a wide open game in the 2nd half. It is our only hope in taking pressure off the defense. We have to keep the ball in the 2nd half or we will lose.

beebe1, cover 2 isn't ALWAYS a bad defense to choose. watch the bears on sunday execute it to near-perfection.

my best friend's younger brother is on the ku team and said that Mangino has lost many if not most of the players. they are completely fed up with his antics....pulling assistant coaches in front of the whole team and calling them MF idiots - that's not going to win games, it will only fracture the team further.
