With 4-star prospect Jalen Wilson now having completed his visits to Kansas and North Carolina, it’s time to move into the waiting phase of the talented wing’s recruitment.
The former Michigan signee and native Texan, who recently received his release from Michigan after former Wolverines coach John Beilein opted to make the jump to the NBA, has visited KU and UNC in the past week and appears to have enjoyed both visits.
I exchanged text messages with his mother, Lisa, Friday morning and she said they were still discussing things as a family but hoped to have an announcement date and a decision soon.
Wilson himself followed that up with an early-afternoon Tweet (see below) that simply said, “Stay tuned.” He later sent another Tweet that revealed that he would announce his college choice at 2 p.m. Wednesday.
Most recruiting analysts continue to peg Kansas as the likely destination for the 6-foot-8, 210-pound wing who has the talent and versatility to play and defend multiple positions.
Rivals.com’s Corey Evans recently reported that Wilson’s visit to KU “could not have gone any better” and added that, “Kansas is where I believe he will end up. The Jayhawks have much to offer, but his heavy interest in the program before it had even begun to recruit him (again) might be too much for UNC or his previously expected landing spot, Michigan, to overcome.”
Wilson visited KU last weekend and was in town for a couple of days.
During an Instagram Live interview with Tipton Edits before his visit, Wilson confirmed that he pretty much had settled on picking KU before he made his visit to Michigan.
“Growing up, I loved the Morris twins,” he said of former Jayhawks and current pros Marcus and Markieff Morris. “I love Kansas basketball, Allen Fieldhouse, that atmosphere is crazy. The college itself is so alive; it never dies. Coach Self and his staff are great coaches and they’re really cool. It’s not even a coach-to-player relationship, it’s just I’m here to make you get better and make you reach your dreams and that’s what I really like about them.”
A four-year varsity player at Guyer High in Denton, Texas, Wilson averaged better than 16 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists in high school and also scored nearly 20 a game while playing on the Gauntlet AAU circuit.
He currently lauds his versatility and ability to play multiple positions — most notably the big wing position a la recent KU stars Josh Jackson and Svi Mykhailiuk — as his biggest strength and has not tried to hide what he believes he can offer any program.
“My plans for college are not to come in and sit,” he said. “I feel like I’m the best player on every school I’m considering, so I just want to make an impact and win.”
