– Joel Embiid: Doubled in the post by a pair excellent defenders all game, Embiid attempted just one shot in the first half. For the game, he made 3 of 5 field goals and 6 of 7 free throws. He had 12 points, 12 rebounds and five blocked shots. Based on how quickly he picks up everything else and how well he shoots free throws, it probably wouldn’t take him long to gain confidence in a jumper from the free-throw line. The Aztecs gave him that shot all day and he passed it up.
– Frank Mason: Hit the two biggest shots of the game, a pair of late three-pointers, the first an open look from the right corner, the second a guarded three from the top of the key. Fumbled the ball away late, but it was his only turnover of the game. Mason always picks up the pace of the game and likes big spots.
– Andrew Wiggins: Misfired on all four three-pointers and was guilty of poor shot selection on some. Needed to stick his nose in the scrum a little more aggressively battling for rebounds and on drives to the hoop. Had a few impressive drives, but the ball kept trickling out. Had 14 points and five rebounds.
– Naadir Tharpe: Took a guarded three in transition late, a bad decision that marred a performance in which he had five assists without turning it over. He made 2 of 10 shots, 1 of 5 three-pointers. He was a little too quick with the trigger, mistaking that for the kind of aggressiveness KU needs out of him. Finished with a triple half-double (five points, five rebounds, five assists).
– Wayne Selden: Had trouble finishing drives and couldn’t hang with the taller Aztecs on the boards. In 26 minutes he contributed six points, one rebound, one assist and two turnovers.
– Perry Ellis: Seemed bothered by San Diego State’s length and athleticism and made just 1 of 8 shots from the field and finished with four points, five rebounds nad three blocked shots.
– Jamari Traylor: Mixed in two points, three rebounds and two blocked shots in 18 minutes.
– Landen Lucas: Always aggressive, Lucas picked up a blocked shot and offensive rebound in two minutes, but missed both free throws.
– Andrew White: Came out of heavy traffic with an offensive rebound, but later missed a wide-open three, which limited his playing time to three minutes.
– Tarik Black: Played six scoreless minutes and produced one offensive rebound, one blocked shot, one turnover and two personal fouls.
– Justin Wesley: Checked in on defense for the final possession of the first half.
