The Keegan Ratings: Sophomore sensations

By Staff     Nov 11, 2006

_After each KU basketball game this season, this is where you can find out the basketball equivalent of The Nielsen Ratings from Journal-World sports editor Tom Keegan. He’ll rate the Jayhawks’ individual performances from top to bottom, telling you who was worth tuning in to watch and who has seen better days. If you agree or maybe even differ, make sure to comment and tell Tom how you really feel._**1. Brandon Rush**: Shoots the pull-up three and the pull-up mid-range jumper with noticeably more confidence and has phenomenal endurance. Contributed 21 points, six boards and four assists.**2. Julian Wright**: He’s handling the ball more and turning it over less (one turnover in 24 minutes) all the time. Exhibited smart shot selection (7-of-9) and relentless hustle.**3. Russell Robinson**: He’s a pain in the neck to try to penetrate against, never appears to take a second off, mentally or physically, and takes great care of the basketball. Four assists, three steals and one turnover.**4. Darnell Jackson**: Looks like a far more confident player than in the past and it didn’t hurt that Rush set him up for KU’s first two baskets, the second a slam after he cut down the lane and caught Rush’s pass. If he continues to produce as he has been (12 points, eight rebounds) there is no guarantee he’ll lose his starting job when Sasha Kaun returns.**5. Darrell Arthur**: He blocked three shots and contributed the highlight of the night when he soared for a one-hand slam on a Brady Morningstar lob that at first appeared as if it was going to be too high to reach.**6. Sherron Collins**: College basketball, meet the latest cross-over dribble phenom. It set him free for a hard drive along the baseline for a first-half bucket and made 2-of-4 three-point shots. Has a tendency to reach for personal fouls, a habit that will fade with time.**7. Mario Chalmers**: Made just 2-of-7 field goals, but otherwise looked like the quick, hard-driving Chalmers who came on big-time in the second half of his freshman season. Had three steals and four rebounds in 16 minutes.**8. Brady Morningstar**: Has very efficient footwork. Blew a layup, but made another. Drew praise for the defensive job he did in the second half on Northern Arizona sharp-shooter Stephen Sir and had three rebounds in 14 minutes.**9. Matt Kleinmann**: Does not play at the same pace as the scholarship players. Managed to mix in a steal and a rebound in nine minutes.**10. Rodrick Stewart**: In 11 minutes, missed all three free throw attempts and both field goal attempts. Was not the same player who boosted the team with energy in both exhibition games.**11. Brad Witherspoon**: Gets on the board with one blocked shot.**12. Brennan Bechard**: His next mistake as a college basketball player will be his first.
