The Kansas men’s golf team claimed its second victory of the season on Tuesday when it edged out Washington by one stroke for the top spot at the Windon Memorial Classic at Onwentsia Club in Lake Forest, Illinois.
The Jayhawks shot 4-under in an impressive first round and then held steady at even par in each of the next two, beating out the surging Huskies, whose top two golfers put together an impressive back nine in the fog-delayed third round. Ultimately, KU won the trophy at 4-under for the event.
“Great team win today,” KU coach Jamie Bermel said in a press release. “It wasn’t our best day, but we hung around and converted some clutch pars the last couple of holes. Winning is hard, and the guys showed a lot of grit and toughness and found a way to win.”
KU had previously emerged victorious from the New York Harbor Cup in Bayonne, New Jersey, at the start of September, led by sophomore Arthur Carlier. This time, it was junior and former UC Riverside transfer Hartej Grewal who paced the Jayhawks, as he tied for fourth in the individual standings by shooting 4-under, thanks in large part to a 3-under second round.
Carlier was not far behind in a tie for eighth at 2-under. Senior Will Baker was tied for 15th at even par, freshman Nicolas Vidal Reig shot 5-over and senior Noah Holtzman shot 7-over. Cal Poly’s Frederick Egnatios and UC Davis’ Zhenxian Zhang tied for first place at 8-under.
“Arthur made a critical up and down on his last hole and Hartej two-putted from about 60 feet,” Bermel said. “Hartej, Will and Arthur had a good week. Nico struggled on the greens but played solid. Noah played well the last two rounds and we needed him. That’s what seniors should do and he stepped up and played his heart out.”
KU is in good form heading into Big 12 Conference match play, which begins on Oct. 11 at Salt Lake Country Club in Salt Lake City.
