One of Kansas’ quarterbacks of the future will reportedly begin his career in earnest at another school.
David McComb will enter the transfer portal, according to a report from On3 on Friday afternoon. He spent one year in Lawrence, during which he redshirted, and will have four years left to play.
McComb, who was a three-star recruit out of Edmond, Oklahoma, helped lead Edmond Memorial High School to one of the first playoff runs in its history. After having served as the first commitment in KU’s class of 2025, even before his junior year of high school, he enrolled early at the school in the winter of 2025 and seemed to give the Jayhawks an archetype of quarterback they have not often had with his size at 6-foot-4 and 220 pounds and his arm talent.
McComb could have been poised to play a role in KU’s upcoming quarterback competition along with the more experienced Isaiah Marshall (class of 2024) and Cole Ballard (class of 2023), and head coach Lance Leipold had said at the start of December he was happy with where the room stood.
Instead, KU may now need to pursue another quarterback for depth or potentially to join the forthcoming competition. The Jayhawks also have Jaylen Mason coming in as a signee in the class of 2026.
Also announcing his intentions to enter the portal on Friday was Kene Anene, a redshirt freshman offensive lineman from Cottage Grove, Minnesota.
“All glory to God,” he wrote in a post on X. “Thank you to the entire University of Kansas for everything these past seasons. I am very grateful. With that being said, I will be entering the transfer portal with three years of eligibility.”
Anene was part of a crowded group of offensive linemen who were soon to be redshirt sophomores, which also includes former high school recruits David Abajian and Carter Lavrusky and former transfers DeAndre Harper and Jack Tanner. (Greydon Grimes recently announced his plans to transfer.)
Anene was a three-star prospect in the class of 2024 who had chosen KU over Army, Colorado State, North Dakota State and more. He played four snaps at right guard and five on the field-goal unit during the 2025 season, according to Pro Football Focus.
KU is now up to a dozen scholarship players expected to enter the transfer portal when it opens on Jan. 2. The Jayhawks have one commitment from a Division II player who was not bound by the usual portal window.
