Another Kansas defensive back is headed to the transfer portal.
Laquan Robinson, a former junior-college safety who spent one year at KU after transferring from Auburn, will be looking for his fourth school in four years. He has one season of eligibility remaining.
The news was first reported by 247Sports late on Tuesday night and shared on social media by Robinson and his representative Kaisaun Nichols. Robinson is the third safety to announce his intentions to leave Kansas, following Lyrik Rawls and Damani Maxson.
Robinson was once one of the top JUCO recruits at his position in the 2024 class, but he never gained significant enough traction to play much on defense at either Auburn, where the Tigers listed him as a linebacker, or at KU. At Auburn, he saw 34 snaps, 29 of which were on special teams according to Pro Football Focus, and redshirted. At KU, where he was something of a surprise addition late in the winter transfer window, he appeared in eight games with 56 snaps, 46 of which came on special teams.
Robinson was in fact a pretty effective special-teams contributor for the Jayhawks, for whom he primarily appeared on kick coverage. He recorded four tackles and even forced a fumble on a kickoff against Oklahoma State. Now the native of Greenville, Alabama, will move on to a new team.
It will be an overhaul at safety for the Jayhawks, who played five defensive backs far more often in D.K. McDonald’s first year as the defensive coordinator. They return a full-time starter in Taylor Davis, who had an inconsistent season, and a part-time one in Mason Ellis, but beyond those two have a pair of freshmen in Darrion Jones and Brandon Schmelzle, making the position one of KU’s top needs in the portal.
