The Kansas women’s basketball team received a commitment on Monday evening from Kawehi Borden, a 6-foot guard from Sumner, Washington.
Borden made her announcement on Instagram. She had reported previous offers from BYU, Oregon, Seton Hall, TCU, Utah and Washington, and now joins guard Amillia Prochnow of Overland Park in KU’s class of 2027.
Rivals lists Borden as a four-star recruit. As a junior at Sumner High School, she averaged 16.0 points and 5.5 rebounds per game, according to MaxPreps. She led her eighth-seeded team to the 4A state title game — “When Kawehi Borden wasn’t dominating the midrange, Sumner’s star guard was facilitating the show,” The News Tribune’s Tyler Wicke wrote of her semifinal performance — before it ultimately lost to the No. 1 seed.
Borden has also played for the Northwest Greyhounds in Adidas’ 3SSB club competition, where per one site she tallied 9.5 points and 4.0 boards in 18 games with a 15-3 record last season.
“Borden is the prototypical wing with her size and length,” Jason Key of Premier Basketball wrote about her back in April. “I was impressed with Borden’s willingness to embrace contact. Long and smooth, Borden will continue to be hotly contested on the recruiting trail.”
The Jayhawks now have two incoming freshmen for next season compared to only one fifth-year player, Brittany Harshaw; their other three listed seniors will all have the opportunity for another year of eligibility if they so choose under the NCAA’s new five-year rules.
