A former Kansas basketball player was arrested on Saturday afternoon in Memphis, Tennessee, and has been charged with attempted first-degree murder.

Lagerald Montrell Vick, 29, a native of Memphis who currently resides there, was also charged with employing a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony, according to Shelby County, Tennessee, criminal court records.

According to an arrest affidavit, Memphis police spoke in the early hours of July 5 at Regional One Hospital with an alleged victim who said he had been shot in the back while attending a party late at night on July 4.

The alleged victim said that a man who had a handgun tucked under his arm — he apparently described the man to police as “a dark-complected male in his late 20s, tall and slim build, wearing dark-colored clothing,” per the affidavit — began a “verbal confrontation” with him. When the alleged victim turned away, the man continued to berate him and shot him with the handgun.

The shooter fled, while the alleged victim went to the hospital. He later provided the first name of the suspect and then on Tuesday identified Vick from among photos of six people as the person who shot him, according to the affidavit. Allegations in affidavits have not been proved in court.

Vick was an inmate in Shelby County jail as of Sunday night, according to jail records, with a video arraignment scheduled for Monday morning. His bond was set at $1.5 million.

He had previously been arrested in April on separate charges of felony aggravated burglary, felony theft of property worth between $1,000 and 2,500, and misdemeanor vandalism of property worth $1,000 or less. That case is pending, with a report to the court set for July 30.

Vick played for KU from 2015 to 2019. His career ended when he took a leave of absence from which he never returned late in his senior season. In recent years, he has played professionally in countries such as Mexico and New Zealand and appeared for the KU alumni team in The Basketball Tournament.
