Former Kansas assistant coach Jerrance Howard, who left the Jayhawks to join Chris Beard’s staff at Texas before the 2021-22 season, has landed at Southern Illinois.
Howard, a native of Peoria, Illinois, recently was added to SIU coach Bryan Mullins’ staff, according to a news release posted to the SIU athletics site.
He joins the Salukis after leaving UT last August. There was some speculation then that Howard was headed toward becoming an agent, but his latest move clearly indicates that college coaching is still in his blood.
Howard spent eight seasons on Self’s staff in Lawrence, joining the Jayhawks after stints at SMU, Illinois and Texas A&M, where he worked for Larry Brown, Bruce Weber and Billy Gillispie.
“I am humbled and blessed to be a part of Coach Mullins’ staff. I have always been a huge fan of his as a player and as a coach,” Howard said in the release. “(I have) some very special connections with this program (and) I am beyond excited to officially be a part of this program while continuing the tradition and history of Saluki basketball. I can’t wait to get to work and help bring championships back to Carbondale.”
Said Mullins, who has been in charge of the SIU program for the past four seasons: “We are excited to welcome Jerrance and his family to our program. Jerrance has an infectious personality and will bring tremendous energy and experience to our staff. His winning background will have an immediate impact on our culture and his ability to form relationships and develop players is what separates him from so many coaches.”
