Each week during the University of Kansas’ sports seasons, the Journal-World staff will select one athlete from a KU men’s sports team and one from a women’s sports team as athletes of the week.

For the week of Sept. 22-28, the selections are Reagan Kibet and Jovana Zelenović.

Reagan Kibet, cross-country

Kibet, a freshman from Ravine, Kenya, debuted for KU at the Gans Creek Classic in Columbia, Missouri, and became the top finisher for the Jayhawks at the event. He came in ninth place overall in 23 minutes, 52.6 seconds, in the 8K race as the men’s team took fifth overall. Assistant head coach Michael Whittlesey said he “executed the race plan extremely well.”

Jovana Zelenović, volleyball

The 6-foot-7 freshman opposite hitter from Novi Sad, Serbia, performed well in each of her first two home matches as a Jayhawk, with 13 kills on .409 hitting in Sunday’s sweep of Arizona and 18 kills on .250 hitting on Friday in a five-set loss to Arizona State. She also set a defensive career high with nine digs in the ASU loss.
