Each week during the University of Kansas’ winter and spring sports seasons, the Journal-World staff will select one athlete from a KU men’s sports team and one from a women’s sports team as athletes of the week.
For the week of March 24-30, the selections are Cooper Moore and Lyla Louderbaugh.
Cooper Moore, baseball
After pitching a scoreless inning at midweek to start the game against St. Thomas, Moore tossed seven strong innings as KU completed its sweep of Oklahoma State on Sunday. The Bixby, Oklahoma, native tallied a career-high nine strikeouts along the way as he conceded two runs on five hits and a pair of walks. His work on the mound was key to the Jayhawks’ unbeaten week and ascension through the Big 12 ranks.
Lyla Louderbaugh, women’s golf
The KU women’s golf team continues to get contributions from a wide variety of sources. At Arizona State’s PING Invitational, at which the Jayhawks finished third behind a pair of the nation’s top teams, Louderbaugh recorded the first top-five finish of her career. Her 6-under 66 in the final round on Sunday featured no bogeys and six birdies, and she tied for fourth overall at a score of 7-under 209. Head coach Lindsay Kuhle said in a press release that Louderbaugh was “in the zone all day.”
