KU baseball defeats Creighton in home opener

By Staff Report     Mar 4, 2020

The Kansas baseball team used timely at bats and solid pitching to earn its first home victory of the season, 3-2, against Creighton at Hoglund Ballpark on Wednesday.

The Bluejays (4-6) attacked first, earning the lead after a double scored a run in the third inning. Kansas (6-6) was quick to respond, however.

In the bottom of the third, Nolan Metcalf reached base on a throwing error by the third baseman. It also allowed Casey Burnham to cross the plate and even the score for Kansas. Metcalf was later hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to give KU a 2-1 lead in the fifth.

After Creighton tied the ballgame with a homer in the sixth, Kansas answered in the bottom of the seventh. Metcalf came through with a base knock to left, scoring Burnham to put the Jayhawks back on top for good.

Nathan Barry (1-1) and Blake Goldsberry each pitched a scoreless inning in relief. Jonah Ulane struck out the side in the ninth to finish things off for KU.

Kansas will host Indiana State for a series this weekend.
