Former Kansas golfer Gary Woodland had his toughest day since the PGA Tour’s return on Saturday at the RBC Heritage golf tournament in Hilton Head, S.C., shooting an even-par 71 and falling out of contention.
By the time Woodland’s round was done, he had dropped 21 spots and into a tie for 66th place through three rounds.
Woodland’s third round began with plenty of promise. The former Jayhawk standout birdied the first two holes he played and added birdies at No. 8 and No. 9 to shoot a 3-under 33 on the front nine.
But a bogey at No. 12 and a quadruple-bogey 7 on the par-3 14th erased all of the ground Woodland had gained earlier in the round.
At the disastrous 14th, Woodland hit his first two tee shots into the water before putting his third attempt on the green and two-putting from there.
Woodland birdied No. 18 to end his round on a good note and at even par for the day and 5-under for the tournament.
Six different golfers shot 8-under on Saturday at the RBC Heritage, including leader Tyrell Hatton, who leads by one, at -15, heading into the final round.
