The Kansas baseball team split Saturday’s doubleheader with Charleston Southern at Nielsen Field at CSU Ballpark.
KU’s bats came alive in the first game of a doubleheader in a 13-4 win. The offense was shut down in a 1-0 loss in the nightcap. The Jayhawks are now 3-3 after dropping two of the first three games to the Buccaneers.
Nolan Metcalf clubbed a three-run homer in the top of the first of the first game to get KU’s offense started.
After CSU (2-5) got a run in the second inning, Kansas struck back in the top of the third. Jack Wagner and Benjamin Sems were both brought in by a pair of back-to-back wild pitches by Charleston Southern’s starter Peyton Schofield.
A walk by Metcalf, a double by Skyler Messinger and a walk by Dylan Ditzenberger loaded the bases for Zach Hanna. He then roped a one-out single to right to bring in Metcalf. A sac fly by Anthony Tulimero scored Messinger and gave Kansas a comfortable 7-1 lead.
Seven Jayhawks recorded a hit. Sems and Metcalf recorded three RBIs each while Ditzenberger and Hanna each drove in two runs.
The series finale is slated to begin at noon Sunday.
