Big inning dooms KU softball, 8-0

By Staff Reports     May 4, 2014

? Kansas University and Texas battled through four-plus innings of a low-scoring pitchers’ duel Sunday.

Then the wheels fell off for the Jayhawks.

Texas exploded for seven runs off seven hits in the fifth to claim an 8-0, Big 12-series-clinching victory on Sunday at McCombs field.

“We were in it until the end, and I don’t think the final score indicated the closeness of the game,” KU coach Megan Smith said.

Kansas starter Kelsey Kessler (18-14) allowed just one run in the first four innings but ultimately surrendered seven earned runs off 10 hits.

KU (30-21, 4-11 Big 12) managed just two hits off UT’s Tiarra Davis (17-11).

Texas improved to 32-20, 11-5.

Kansas will conclude the regular season May 9-11, when it hosts Iowa State in a three-game set at Arrocha Ballpark.
