Kansas University senior Elizabeth Scherer was named Conference USA Rowing Scholar Athlete of the Year on Wednesday, a year after collecting the same award from the Big 12.
KU competes in both conferences in rowing.
“I don’t like to talk about myself or brag, but this does make me really happy,” Scherer said. “Being in both conferences, there is always more competition, so it’s exciting. I am involved in a lot of things, but I feel like there are so many people that are more involved so I was surprised to win. This is great.”
An All-Big 12 pick as a junior and senior, Scherer was voted the 2014 Kansas Oarswoman of the Year by her coaches and teammates. She accumulated three victories, 22 top-five finishes and 27 top-10 finishes as a member of the First Varsity Eight.
A Wamego native, she graduated in May with a 3.97 grade-point average in exercise science/pre-physical therapy.
