KU softball ace Kessler earns Big 12 weekly award again

By Staff Reports     May 8, 2013

Kansas University freshman pitcher Kelsey Kessler is the Big 12 Softball Pitcher of the Week for the second time this season, the conference announced Tuesday.

Kessler, who won the award after a no-hitter in early April, shut out the No. 1 Oklahoma Sooners on Sunday. Her record is 9-6.

“Kelsey Kessler is a pitcher that makes you stop and take notice of what she can do,” KU coach Megan Smith said. “She certainly did that this weekend. Kelsey held her poise and confidence against No. 1 Oklahoma and it showed. We are very proud of her and are happy to see her great accomplishment be recognized by our conference.”

Kansas (31-16 overall, 6-8 Big 12) will finish out its conference season with a three-game series at Iowa State, starting Friday. If the Jayhawks make the NCAA tournament field — the selection show airs 9 p.m. Sunday on ESPNU — they will begin regional play on May 16.
