Kansas softball team splits

? The Kansas University softball team defeated Harvard, 9-1 in five innings, and lost to San Diego State, 10-2, on Friday in the San Diego Classic.

In the first game, KU freshman Mariah Montgomery went 4-for-4 with three RBIs.

The Jayhawks collected 11 hits, while KU pitcher Allie Clark held the Crimson to three hits as she improved to 4-3 on the year. Clark also batted in a run.

Freshman Rosie Hull joined Montgomery with multiple hits, finishing 3-for-3. Maggie Hull, twin sister of Rosie, and senior Sara Ramirez each batted in two runs.

KU sent 10 batters to the plate in the first inning and scored four runs off four hits.

The Jayhawks tacked on one run in the second and two more in the third inning. Kansas scored its last two tallies in the bottom of the fifth. With the bases loaded, Harvard pitcher Jessica Ferri hit Clark and then walked Maggie Hull.

Harvard scored its lone run off back-to-back doubles in the fourth inning.

In the second game, San Diego State put the Jayhawks away with two big innings, scoring three runs in the fifth and four runs in the sixth.

KU trailed just 3-2 in the fourth inning, but the Aztecs replaced starting pitcher Bailey Micetich with Samantha Beasley, who proceeded to strike out KU’s last seven batters.

Alex Jones and Rosie Hull each had two hits for the Jayhawks.

San Diego State’s offense rallied for seven runs on seven hits over the last two innings to pull away and end the game in six innings. Senior Sara Vertelka tossed all six innings for the Jayhawks. She fell to 4-9.

Kansas (12-16) concludes the San Diego Classic today with a 4 p.m. contest versus Illinois-Chicago and a 6:30 p.m. game against San Diego.
