Darin Fyffe and Matt Koster have known one another for 10 years.
They played football together in junior college. Koster was in Fyffe’s wedding. But on gamedays between KU and K-State, the two aren’t even friends.
The in-state rivals stood outside in Kansas City’s Power and Light District conversing over beers. Though they were smiling and laughing, Koster, who lives in Leawood, said the two talk trash every day.
“If we’re not doing it face-to-face, there’s a text message flying somewhere,” Koster said.
The friendly divide occurred when the two left junior college and made their respective state university choices.
“I got smart and went to KU,” Koster said. “He fell off and went to K-State.”
Koster doesn’t always have the upper hand though. Fyffe, a hoisington resident, said during the basketball season he finds himself saying ‘wait until football’. During the football season, Koster is constantly telling him ‘wait until basketball’.
Kansas holds a 32-2 record over Kansas State since the Big 12 was formed.
The two will once again be divided when The Jayhawks match up with the Wildcats for the Big 12 Tournament championship at 5 p.m. Saturday. Koster had a game prediction that he shared loudly in the direction of Fyffe.
“This one’s not even going to be close,” Koster said.
