Many believed that former Kansas University wide receiver Kerry Meier possessed too much versatility to be passed over in this year’s NFL Draft.

The Atlanta Falcons agreed and made Meier the 34th pick in the fifth round, pick No. 165 overall. Meier was the 19th wide receiver taken in the draft.

“As soon as I picked up the phone and they said Atlanta Falcons, I was the happiest man on this planet,” Meier told members of the Atlanta media Saturday. “It’s something you can’t really put into words right now, and I’m so excited to be where I am today and have the opportunity to come in and help the team out in any way possible.”

The day was a good distraction for Meier, who’s been dealing with the death of his older brother, Dylan, a former Kansas State football player.

“It’s something I still don’t really feel happened,” Meier said. “I keep thinking my brother’s going to come walking through that door with that big smile on his face he always carried. It’s definitely going to be very hard to let this guy go. He was one of a kind. The news I got today, besides me being the happiest guy, he’s the second happiest guy for me.”

Meier leaves Kansas as the school record holder for career receptions (226), single-season receptions (102) and single-game receptions (16 vs. Iowa State).
