Although he has had his hands full with football so far, Kansas University football coach Turner Gill has found plenty of ways to demonstrate how important community is to him.
KU officials announced recently that during halftime of the Jayhawks’ April 24 Spring Game, Gill plans to lead a group of youths and their parents in a pledge against the use of drugs.
In a letter sent to all of Lawrence’s elementary schools last week, Gill wrote: “I want you to know that we teach our players what you are learning in your health and science classes at school — drugs are not fun and they can harm you, your friends and your family. Together, we can all take the pledge and promise to live a drug-free lifestyle.”
The reading of the pledge, which can be obtained upon entering Memorial Stadium the day of the game, will be led by Gill and senior defensive back Chris Harris.
In addition, the first 500 youths who arrive can pick up a “Drug-Free Jayhawk” bracelet and the first 5,000 fans will receive a free T-shirt.
The annual Spring Game is scheduled to kick off at 1 p.m. Gates will open at noon, and admission is free.
WR catches KU offer
Rivals.com is reporting that Kansas has made an offer to junior wideout Shevin Patton of Millwood High in Oklahoma City.
KU becomes the second school to offer Patton, 5-foot-11, 180 pounds. Tulsa was the first, but the offer from the Jayhawks followed quickly.
KU assistant coach Robert Wimberly is the lead recruiter for Patton, and the player described by his high school coach as “electric with the ball,” told Rivals he plans to attend KU’s Spring Game.
Arizona and Texas A&M also have shown interest in Patton.
KU adds Illinois DT to list
Last week, Kansas became the second school to extend a scholarship offer to East St. Louis High defensive tackle Clint Tucker.
Tucker, 6-2, 285, is being recruited by KU assistant coach Reggie Mitchell and already has an offer from the University of Kentucky on the table.
Illinois is the other school vying for Tucker’s services as of now, but Tucker told Rivals in late February he was hoping to hear from both Alabama and Ohio State.
