KU’s Thompson named third-team All-American

Kansas University third baseman Tony Thompson was honored as a third-team All-American on Thursday by Louisville Slugger. He becomes the 14th Jayhawk to be selected as an All-American and the first since Don Czyz in 2006.

Thompson, a sophomore from Reno, Nev., has hit a school-record 19 home runs this season to go with a .374 average. He leads the Big 12 in homers, RBIs (78), total bases (138) and slugging percentage (.730). He also has a current 16-game hitting streak.

Seventy-seven players were honored by Louisville Slugger. San Diego State pitcher Stephen Strasburg was selected as Player of the Year.

KU opens play in the NCAA Tournament at 1 p.m. Friday against No. 15 Coastal Carolina in Chapel Hill, N.C.
