KU’s Self recognized as Kansan of Year

By The Associated Press     Jan 10, 2009

A group promoting Kansas history is honoring Kansas University men’s basketball coach Bill Self as one of two Kansans of the Year.

The award from the Native Sons and Daughters of Kansas follows the Jayhawks’ national championship last year.

The group plans to have its annual awards banquet Jan. 30 in Topeka.

Self is the Distinguished Kansan of the Year, an award that recognizes someone who has made contributions to the state but is a native of another state. Self is originally from Edmond, Okla.

The Kansan of the Year award, reserved for a Kansas native, will go to Delano Lewis, a former U.S. ambassador to South Africa and past chief executive officer of National Public Radio. He was born in Arkansas City and raised in Kansas City, Kan.

The group also is giving a Distinguished Service Citation to the city of Greensburg, following its recovery from a devastating May 2007 tornado.
