Rush’s last-second three falls short, KU drops nail-biter in Stillwater, 61-60

STILLWATER, Okla. - Bill Self said his team played like one that was distracted.

Distracted or not, the result Saturday in Stillwater was a 61-60 setback in the KU coach's third trip back to Gallagher-Iba Arena as the Jayhawk sideline commander. The win boosts the surging Oklahoma State Cowboys to 14-12 overall and 5-7 in the league with three straight wins over three of the top five teams in the league. KU drops to 24-3 overall and 9-3 in Big 12 play, falling behind Texas' pace atop the conference standings.

It was messy from the beginning, with the two teams combining for nine turnovers in the game's first four minutes. OSU took charge for the first time behind a pair of Obi Muonelo three-pointers before halftime, taking a 36-32 advantage into the intermission.

The Cowboys endured a slump for the first several minutes of the second stanza as KU charged back. Brandon Rush, who was scoreless on 0-for-5 shooting in the first half, scored 12 points in the second. Mario Chalmers finished with 11 points, taking charge offensively for much of the afternoon with KU's leading scorer on the year - Darrell Arthur - scoring just six points in 17 minutes of play before fouling out.

Arthur exited the game after fouling OSU junior Byron Eaton, who finished with a game-high 26 points, most of it coming off of a 16-of-18 free throw shooting performance. He hit the game-winner with :12.6 seconds to go, and Rush's last-second three-point attempt from the left corner was short off the rim, sending the OSU students into a frenzy as they rushed the floor.

Darnell Jackson led KU with 16 points and eight rebounds, as both he and Rodrick Stewart played in the wake of deaths in their immediate families.

KU next plays Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Iowa State.

Final, OSU wins 61-60

Mario Chalmers missed a three after a first Jayhawk attempt was swatted by Marcus Dove, but Brandon Rush, off the offensive board, swung around to the free throw line and cashed a jumper, letting out another yell as he scored his 11th and 12th points of the second half and put KU ahead 58-54.

Byron Eaton scored another point at the stripe to make it a three-point game, and Byron Eaton then fed Martavius Adams for two inside to pull OSU within one. A KU turnover led to Sean Sutton calling a full timeout with his team down just a point with 2:01 to play.

Eaton was called for a travel on the baseline out of the timeout, giving KU possession with just under two minutes to play.

KU turned the ball over after Bill Self called a 30-second timeout, and Marcus Dove stroked his first three-pointer of the game right at the one-minute mark to put KU up by two. Darnell Jackson answered back by slipping two into the bucket off the glass, leaving OSU with the ball and a five-second difference on the clocks.

Byron Eaton milked the clock and got to the free throw line with :12.6 left, drawing the fourth foul on Sasha Kaun.

Eaton calmly sunk the first try, but missed the second and KU opted to go for it and not whistle a timeout. Brandon Rush got a last-second look at a three, but it missed short off the iron, giving OSU a 61-60 win as the students rushed the floor.

3:58, second half, KU leads 56-54

Byron Eaton hit both his free throws, but KU closed it down into a three-point game with Mario Chalmers hitting his first three-pointer of the game from straight on. Eaton then got back to the line in the bonus off of Darrell Arthur's fifth and final foul of the game.

Brandon Rush answered back with two points after following his own miss inside, drawing contact, too. His free throw gave him seven points, all of which have come in the second half.

Marcus Dove then wound up at the stripe with OSU in the double bonus off a Chalmers foul - his fourth.

He hit two free throws, but Brandon Rush finally tied things back up for KU with his first three-pointer of the game coming from the left corner. That made it 54-54 with just under five minutes to play.

Sasha Kaun then put the Jayhawks ahead 56-54 with just his second bucket of the game following an OSU offensive foul. Ibrahima Thomas was then called for his fifth foul, sending the game into its final TV timeout with 3:58 to play.

7:20, second half, OSU leads 48-45

Mario Chalmers missed an up-and-under layup attempt out of the timeout, giving OUS a chance to extend its lead. Martavius Adams missed a mid-range jumper, and Darnell Jackson responded for KU with his first points of the second half, giving him 14 on the afternoon and pulling KU to within seven points. Byron Eaton scored two more for OSU, giving him a game-high 20 and keeping the crowd a factor with OSU up 48-39.

Chalmers scored again getting to the rack, giving him eight points and forcing Sean Sutton into a 30-second timeout call.

Brandon Rush aired a three after an OSU turnover out of the timeout, but Russell Robinson followed it up with an easy layup underneath. That turned into another OSU giveaway with KU down five and eight minutes to play.

Rush hit his second two-point jumper of the game after that to make it a three-point contest. Rush was then called for a foul as Byron Eaton went up for a layup underneath but got clobberred.

11:49, second half, OSU leads 46-37

Darrell Arthur hit one of two free throws on KU's first possession out of the half, and those would be the game's lone points for nearly three minutes, as each team played just as sticky and physical as it had in the first half.

Terrel Harris checked back in for OSU after the Cowboys called a full timeout with just under 17 minutes to play. The Cowboys immediately missed a shot, and Brandon Rush got himself on the board with a long two-point jumper, letting out a yell after scoring his first points of the game to pull KU wtihin one at 36-35.

Harris quickly picked up his fourth foul at the 15:49 mark, sending the game into a full break with the Cowboys still scoreless in the second half.

James Anderson finally got OSU onto the second half scoreboard with a three form the wing, and Ibrahima Thomas followed it with a turnaround two inside, forcing KU into a quick timeout, suddenly down six.

After a Brandon Rush miss from the wing, Byron Eaton faced a fading shot clock and cashed a baseline jumper to give OSU its biggest lead yet at eight points, but Mario Chalmers was able to get to the foul line on the other end, hitting a pair of free throws and keeping KU within range at six points. Obi Muonelo came back down for the white-hot Cowboys and swished another three-point try to put the Cowboys up nine.

Ibrahima Thomas created another KU turnover after a Jayhawk 30-second timeout, and Russell Robinson was quickly called for his second foul.

Halftime, OSU leads 36-32

Following a Marcus Dove three miss, Darnell Jackson tipped in a Russell Robinson miss to make it a two-point game, but Byron Eaton continued to build on his great offensive first half with two more free throws before setting on the bench to close the half. He left with a game-high 16 points.

Darnell Jackson put himself in double figures with a pair of free throws after that, but Obi Muonelo canceled it out with a three atop the key. Jackson scored again, slashing to the hoop once more.

Cole Aldrich closed it down into a one-point game before OSU held for the last shot. Muonelo got off a three with five seconds to play and cashed it, putting OSU ahead 36-32 at the break.

Muonelo finished behind Eaton for the top scoring honors in white, putting away nine. Darnell Jackson led KU with 12, while Russell Robinson added seven.

Offensively, it was a strange half for the Jayhawks. Brandon Rush and Sherron Collins were both scoreless, while Darrell Arthur was limited in terms of minutes due to two early fouls - one of which was a technical. KU was also 0-for-5 from three-point range.

3:24, first half, OSU leads 28-24

Darnell Jackson hit a pair of free throws out of the timeout in the bonus, but OSU answered back in a big way. First, Eaton hit his first three-pointer of the game, giving him a game-high nine points. Then, James Anderson dropped in two in transition. Darrell Arthur added two bonus free throws with KU now in the double-bonus, tying the game again, 23-23.

After KU then turned it over for the 10th time already, Byron Eaton hit another three-pointer, this time from about three feet beyond the arc. Eaton would hit two more free throws after a Darrell Arthur charity. That all came on the heels of a fan just off the floor on the sideline getting booted, causing a slight break in the game.

A series of misses on both ends, including Mario Chalmers being called for his second foul of the game on a charge, was capped by a travel call on Darnell Jackson heading into the final full break of the first half, OSU up by four.

8:36, first half, KU leads 19-18

Terrel Harris hit one of two free throws out of the timeout in the bonus, but Sasha Kaun responded with two for OSU, following a Mario Chalmers floater miss with two off the glass. Harris answered back with a three from the left corner to again give OSU a four-point advantage.

KU got itself into the bonus a couple of moments later, as Terrel Harris was whistled for his third foul and the team's seventh. Russell Robinson hit a pair of free throws after the foul.

Mario Chalmers then tied it up with his first points of the game after a blown OSU scoring opportunity, slashing and dropping in two off the window. Chalmers was whistled for his first foul moments later, blocking Byron Eaton's path to the basket. Eaton cashed both, giving him six points and OSU a two-point edge. Chalmers again answered with a one-hander off the dribble drive.

An OSU three miss by Obi Muonelo gave KU a chance at something, but off a miss, Muonelo threw a lob for James Anderson, whose first points of the game brought the crowd to a fever pitch.

Russell Robinson picked up where Mario Chalmers had left off by slashing to the bucket, scoring two of his own and drawing contact. His free throw gave him a game-high seven points and put the Jayhawks back up by a point, 19-18.

11:39, first half, OSU leads 10-8

Ugliness truly ensued after Russell Robinson scored a bucket and Obi Muonelo dropped one of two free throws out of the timeout. Offsetting technical fouls were called on Ibrahima Thomas and Darrell Arthur after a foul call against Terrel Harris when Sasha Kaun got tied up with the ball under the OSU hoop.

For KU, it was Arthur's second foul of the game, sending him to the bench with just two points to his credit just inside of the 15-minute mark.

Darnell Jackson drew a foul underneath on Byron Eaton after it was all sorted out, and then hit two free throws to put KU ahead 6-3.

Obi Muonelo then drew another foul and hit two free throws to make it a one-point game. The Cowboys followed it up with a big defensive stand in forcing a shot clock violation before Mario Chalomers could get off a three look.

Martavius Adams off the bench hit a two inside in response while drawing contact to put OSU on top. His free throw made it 8-6, which brought Cole Aldrich and Rodrick Stewart into the game.

Byron Eaton then went like a bowling ball into the lane again to get to the foul line, drawing the sixth infraction on KU in the first half at just the 12:47 mark, forcing Bill Self into a 30-second timeout call. Eaton hit both free throws out of the timeout.

Terrel Harris had a three rim out after OSU got the ball back yet agin, and Darnell Jackson responded with a fading two while knifing across the lane to pull KU within two. Russell Robinson was called for a foul, though, sending OSU into the bonus and the game into a full break at the 11:39 mark.

15:53, first half, game tied 2-2

Russell Robinson controlled the game's opening tip, but Mario Chalmers was forced into a tie-up by Byron Eaton almost right away, giving possession to the Cowboys. Ibrahima Thomas missed a three from the left wing for the 'Pokes, but KU turned it right back over, again giving OU a chance at the game's first points. Byron Eaton was quickly called for a carry while trying to work around Darrell Arthur.

Arthur scored the game's first points with a baby hook in the post on the other end. He was called for a foul on the defensive end of the floor though as Eaton knifed near the hole. Eaton cashed both charities, tying things up 2-2.

Darnell Jackson turned it over after that into the hands of James Anderson, but a Marcus Dove three attempt was no good in response. KU did OSU another favor with a quick turnover after the defensive carom was gathered. OSU again couldn't answer, with Obi Muonelo missing a mid-range look, but KU turned it back over into Eaton's hands. The junior guard missed a layup, but KU was no good on two more shots sandwiching a Mario Chalmers swat of James Anderson.

The ugliness continued, with Chalmers and Anderson swapping two more ugly looks before a TV timeout at 15:53, score still tied 2-2.

Pregame

STILLWATER, Okla. - It's been a week since Kansas University last took the floor, and in the team's return to action the Jayhawks hope to shake off a mini-funk which culminated with an underwhelming 69-45 win over Colorado last Saturday in Allen Fieldhouse.

Today, the Jayhawks (24-2 overall, 9-2 Big 12) take on a talented team in Oklahoma State (13-12, 4-7) which is on its first roll of the season. The Cowboys are making a late push towards the middle of the league standings now after back-to-back win over likely NCAA Tournament teams in Texas A&M; and Baylor.

Every game continues to have added importance for KU, which is in the thick of a three-horse race with Texas and Kansas State for the Big 12 regular season title as the schedule now hits its stretch run. After six days off, KU plays three games in the next seven days, including a trip to Ames, Iowa, Wednesday and then a home game against K-State next Saturday at 8 p.m.

But KU cannot afford to look past OSU. The Cowboys boast as talented a corps of perimeter players as you'll find in the Big 12. The charge offensively is led by James Anderson, a freshman swingman who chose OSU over KU and leads the 'Pokes in scoring with a 14.5 average. The sparkplug in the last two games for OSU, though, has been junior point guard Byron Eaton. In the two wins, the former McDonald's All-American has 42 points, 13 assists and just four turnovers.

KU is playing with heavy hearts, with both Darnell Jackson and Rodrick Stewart having suffered losses in their families this week. The other major storyline heading into today's action is the return to Stillwater for the third time for Bill Self as the KU head coach. He's 1-1 as a head coach in Gallagher-Iba against his alma mater.

Tip-off is set for 3 p.m., with the game airing on CBS.

Before I get bashed with the Julian comment, I said "quite often" which allows for exclusions :).

You guys are pathetic. Dont even talk to me. Next time your brother is murdered and you go play a basketball game at Gallager-Iba before he is even buried, and win, come talk to me. Until then-SHUT UP!

On time we PRAY!! I hate watching 75% of the game. NO Overtime for Ark & KY Please!!!

Darnell Jackson to Eaton- "you tell the cowboys that I'm coming, and that Hell is coming with me!"

jayharchitect 14 years, 4 months ago

Listening to the game, they were talking about Gallagher-Iba arenay. Self was talking about how they have raised the roof, etc... etc... Then he said "just like what we're planning on doing to the Fieldhouse."

Did anyone else just hear that?

lance1jhawk 14 years, 4 months ago

I heard Bill say that as well... Chris and Bob just said that there is alot of Blue in the building as well. Can you confirm or deny that Ryan?

ku98 14 years, 4 months ago

Somebody needs to light a fire under Brandon's a$$.
He needs to stop that little mid-range floater cr*p and attack the rim. He is way too soft on offense.

Bleed_Crimson_Blue 14 years, 4 months ago

Does it seem like to anyone else that this team has lost some component of their game? They look nothing like the team that started 20-0. It seems that ANY team that plays any kind of stiff D just drains our game...

BCRavenJHawkfan 14 years, 4 months ago

It would be nice if we would play college level ball rather than 3A high school ball!

truehawkfan 14 years, 4 months ago

We have been saying that about him for 3 years. I just don't think he is that tough. Cole seems to be playing well. He is playing his role and grabbing rebounds.

jayhawkinATL 14 years, 4 months ago

What the freak is Case doing in the game already?!?!

mom_of_three 14 years, 4 months ago

could someone yell at the refs already???

mom_of_three 14 years, 4 months ago

Kevin Harlan thinks Self coaches at KState

Joe Ross 14 years, 4 months ago

OSU is killing us from the perimeter. I said after the first few games of the season that perimeter defense was going to be our Achille's heal.

jayhawkinATL 14 years, 4 months ago

Actually surprised we're only down by 4!!!!

Bleed_Crimson_Blue 14 years, 4 months ago

This is pitiful...

This team has gone from a Final Four shoe-in to not even the best team in the Big 12.

truehawkfan 14 years, 4 months ago

It looks to me like Aldrich is the only one that came to play!! Our guard defense has been really bad so far. 5 3's in the first half!! Wow!! OSU came to beat our a$$. We better step up and get in battle mode. We will have to grind this one out. Hopefully Brandon gets an earful from Self at the half! Way to hide for 20 minutes Brandon. I am sure the scouts are really impressed now!!

jayhawkinATL 14 years, 4 months ago

One of these day, Hubert Davis is going to stop drinking the Kool-Aid and stop voting us #1 in ESPN's Power 16.

jayhawkinATL 14 years, 4 months ago

Lately, Brandon has definitely been playing his way to a senior season at KU.

truehawkfan 14 years, 4 months ago

Maybe we peaked to early? I don't know, but I agree, we don't even look close to the 20 - 0 team early on.

okjhok 14 years, 4 months ago

Bottom line is this team has not improved one bit this season. In fact, they seem to have regressed in some areas. When was the last time they looked solid against a "decent" team? BC? Someone mentioned they looked like they lost a component of their game. Yeah, they don't play with any heart. That's what's lost. They don't play to win. They play scared. I have no idea where the fire went, but it's gone, and until it's back any team in the conference as well as any team in the NCAAs will have about a 50/50 shot of beating KU.

jayhawkinATL 14 years, 4 months ago

Our lock-down guard play has deserted us too!!!!

okjhok 14 years, 4 months ago

On second thought, Jackson and Chalmers play with heart...but Chalmers makes too many boneheaded plays for it to matter. Time for Arthur to go into beast mode, if he's capable of that.

Bleed_Crimson_Blue 14 years, 4 months ago

Who does everyone think KU's best win of the season is? I thought those non-con games with BC, Arizona, G Tech, and USC were pretty decent, but they have all kind of flamed out lately.

My vote would either be OU at home or USC on the road. That's kind of sad when you think about it, because OU was without Griffin the whole game (even though we dominated early when he was in there).

What do you guys think?

jayhawkinATL 14 years, 4 months ago

My pick is Nebraska on the road. Back then, Rush looked like he was going to have a GREAT Big 12 year.

Greg Lux 14 years, 4 months ago

Why is it we dont shoot 3 pointers when we are open .... Rush passed up 3 to drive to the basket and missed all 3 attempts at 5 footers .. I dont know why we dont drive and dishout anymore .. we are not using all our guns .. we need a balanced offense and we are becoming a total get it inside team .. Come on Hawks ... Think ..

ku98 14 years, 4 months ago

After reading Keegan's article about Eaton and Collins, I thought it would be an interesting match-up to follow... Eaton has 16, Sherron 0. 'nuff said.

LAJayhawk 14 years, 4 months ago

We need to utilize that high post against the zone a lot more. Darrell is very effective from there.

LAJayhawk 14 years, 4 months ago

Our guard pressure is just not there anymore. Get in their grill boys!

NH_JHawk 14 years, 4 months ago

Just joined the game. Am I seeing the scoreboard correctly (CBS sportsline feed)? Only 3 points for KU this half? Seems like a terrible game so far...

jayhawkinATL 14 years, 4 months ago

Once again, the Hawks are just chugging along and may very well cut into this lead...BUT time will RUN OUT again!!!!

jayhawkinATL 14 years, 4 months ago

Well...hopefully, we can hold on to 2nd place in the Big 12!!!!

ku98 14 years, 4 months ago

This is as bas as I have seen our guys play this year. Turnovers... Stupid fouls... Bad D. It is painful to watch.

LAJayhawk 14 years, 4 months ago

They've got to relax and play, not panic. If they do that the offense will look worse... if that's possible

NH_JHawk 14 years, 4 months ago

Is our offense on springbreak or something? 37 points thru 3/4 of the game? WTF?

Bleed_Crimson_Blue 14 years, 4 months ago

This might turn into the most disappointing season in a while. How can such a talented team look so inept, especially on offense. This team should be scoring 90 a game... on off nights!

LAJayhawk 14 years, 4 months ago

It feels like their empty inside today.

Greg Lux 14 years, 4 months ago

I wish I could put my finger on one player .. but this is a team effort to play bad ..

okjhok 14 years, 4 months ago

This is, without question, the most frustrating game I've seen KU play in years. Arthur is the biggest waste of talent I've ever seen.

ku98 14 years, 4 months ago

We have scored 6 points in 11 minutes.

Greg Lux 14 years, 4 months ago

we dont have a shot thats not dribble in and throw it up at the basket I guess ... thats all we are doing .

LAJayhawk 14 years, 4 months ago

We need to just goes balls out on defense right now, that will turn the whole game around

lance1jhawk 14 years, 4 months ago

You think Arthur is bad and then you notice Brandons total lack of effort today.

NH_JHawk 14 years, 4 months ago

Another o-fer from 3 point land? This is definitely turning into a big weakness for us. Certainly a decline in production from last year. OSU is 7-16 from 3? This team shoots like 36% from 3. Again exposing our other glaring weakness...PERIMETER DEFENSE! This is UGLY!

BCRavenJHawkfan 14 years, 4 months ago

I've seen enough! It is official we are a pretender rather than a contender. I see nothing but about 5 guys riding it out to draft day!!

ku98 14 years, 4 months ago

I can't believe we are only down by 3, despite playing like a bunch of a$$ wipes. Ridiculous.

Greg Lux 14 years, 4 months ago

Chalmers .... PLEASE shot your open 3 oppertunities ... Please ...

LAJayhawk 14 years, 4 months ago

A THREE!!!!!!! HOLY SH*T!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bleed_Crimson_Blue 14 years, 4 months ago

One thing I miss about Roy is when the starters were playing with a lack of fire he took them ALL out, sat them, and put in the scrubs. It always seemed to send the message. I wonder why Self doesn't do that sometimes...

ku98 14 years, 4 months ago

Sasha with the left handed hook. NICE!

Brian Powell 14 years, 4 months ago

I missed the first half - and glad I did - 15 turnovers in a half!?

LAJayhawk 14 years, 4 months ago

Like I said, the defense has started to pick it up, and it's a whole new game (of course the threes don't hurt either)

Bleed_Crimson_Blue 14 years, 4 months ago

Has anyone else noticed how Harlan, a KU grad, seems to do a good job of staying impartial. I guess that's why he's one of the best and has been around forever. Just a random observation.

LAJayhawk 14 years, 4 months ago

Who's this Rush guy? Has he been on the team the whole time??

Bleed_Crimson_Blue 14 years, 4 months ago

Good timing for a "dribbling violation"! What a crock!

jaw7621 14 years, 4 months ago

Arthur fouled out? The guy seems WAY too foul happy. We need him to reign it in, if we're going to be successful in the tourney.

lance1jhawk 14 years, 4 months ago

Gotta love Kevin Harlan... Hawks have got to stop the turnovers!

LAJayhawk 14 years, 4 months ago

lance1jhawk 14 years, 4 months ago

I sure hope those OSU fans don't get their shoes dirty from the GIANT TURD KU just left on the court!!!!

NH_JHawk 14 years, 4 months ago

It's one thing to lose on the road to ranked KSU or Texas but OSU is a terrible team. This is a bad loss. I'd say we just laid an egg.

landon_2003 14 years, 4 months ago

F ku man....they are in some deep trouble. horrible....thats all i can say. i really dont give a s if they win another game cuz come touney time...they'll be done fast. kiss that number 1 seed goodbye

William Daniels 14 years, 4 months ago

Loss is deserved. We play like we are entitled to a win. Very disappointing.

Greg Lux 14 years, 4 months ago

well ... as much as I hate to say it ... we didnt deserve to win .. How can you call a timeout setup a play and have a turnover because Kaun was not even looking for the ball ... we are playing so stupid we are wasting our talent and we need to change and change soon .. Hard to watch ... But I still love our team .. just not the way we are playing ..

KUglow 14 years, 4 months ago

Good bye Big 12 title. Good bye #1 seed.

Mr_Sandman 14 years, 4 months ago

SELF NEEDS TO KICK THESE GUYS IN THE ASS! I am normally optimistic, but this half-ass, don't want to be aggressive crap is really, really, getting old. Especially Rush. I guess he realized we were playing a game in the second half, but he should be SO much better.

fansincewilt 14 years, 4 months ago

Say what you want about the KU players, I don't know how any team could overcome that officiating.

jhwkfanincali 14 years, 4 months ago

Officials helped but shooting percentage was awful. Number 1 seed in tourney is gone I think. How many wake up calls are needed?

kuhawksr1 14 years, 4 months ago

Any other team in America drives to the basket and looks for the foul call. KU?? They parade around the three point line. SICK! They looked like total crap today and got exactly what they deserved. Pathetic. Most overrated top 5 team in history!

landon_2003 14 years, 4 months ago

starting 5 are stinking it up it's simple....pull them all and put in 5 walk ons. williams used to do it and you know what if we are going to lose the game might as well do it with the walk ons on the floor.

Chris Shaw 14 years, 4 months ago

I've said it time and time again! Bill Self let's mediocre teams hang around. Hey Bill, instead of waiting until you're down 6 freaking points and decided to start pressing, why don't you freaking come out with mentality. What a Joke! I can accept nothing but a flame out before the final four. What a Joke Bill! Do something instead of getting TKO'd by an inferior team.

Ian Brown 14 years, 4 months ago

I'm sick of hearing all this crap about this refs. The refs made bad calls that went against OSU as well. We lost fair and square. That being said, we do not belong in the top 10. I previously said we would make it to the sweet 16, but after that pathetic showing I'll go ahead and say we won't make it past the second round. This team isn't hungry enough, and we get shook in tight situations. I thought this team would get better as the season progressed but we've only faltered--I don't think we've won any close/big games since Arizona and USC early in the season. Well, good season 'Hawks--thanks for getting our hopes up for the first 21 games. Adios.

kcchieeefs 14 years, 4 months ago

I honestly am beginning to think that self is not our man... great recruiter but no idea how to coach. I think if we have another early exit (were going to) then we need to legitamately look for a new coach... CALAPARI

okjhok 14 years, 4 months ago

I'm officially questioning Self's coaching ability. OSU had no answer for our post play, yet we consistently bring our bigs out to set a meaningless screen. As soon as the screen is set we pass the ball. There is no roll and we take our strength (the post) away from the basket. Will someone who knows more about bball than me please tell me what the f*ck this accomplishes?

rcaltrider 14 years, 4 months ago

Complete lack of mental toughness. Yeah, the refs decided it but this game shouldn't even be close. They should win by 20. You have to have mental toughness to win on the road and the same mental toughness to win in the tournament and this team just doesn't have it. I got tickets to the Midwest Regional in Detroit and I think I will be selling now because Kansas won't be there. Top 5 talent, out of the top 25 mental toughness. Sweet 16 at best for this team unless they grow a pair between now and tourney time.

jayhawkinATL 14 years, 4 months ago

I agree, bjdku...it's all about a sense of ENTITLEMENT!!!! We just can't put on the uni...we have to PLAY the game!!!! Uuuuuuuugh!!!

lance1jhawk 14 years, 4 months ago

Lets not blame the officials for the loss... We are not K-SUck. The officiating did not make us miss three pointers and have 21 turnovers! The officiating did not make Brandon disappear in the first 30 minutes of the game! We just stunk it up and could not get over our own short commings!

Ian Brown 14 years, 4 months ago

Oh, and that last shot we got off--PATHETIC. As "kuhawks" said, any other team would have driven it to the hoop in order to make a simple layup or at least get a foul call. We were down by 1 point, why shoot a contested, off-balanced three point shot. Pathetic.

Mr_Sandman 14 years, 4 months ago

OSU shot so many FT's because they were aggressive towards the basket. I hate those bail out calls as much as anybody, but someone for KU needs to figure out that the game is going to be called that way and get to the hole themselves. Are guards COULD get to the lane when the want, they are just too passive and/or poorly coached.

isolve4x 14 years, 4 months ago

Does anyone else think that our amazing team balance and unselfishness is not only our best strength but also our biggest weakness? We just don't have anyone who wants to step up and take over a game. Sure, the idea behind having balance is great when ONE guy has a bad game and the others can all take up the slack, but we just don't have that go-to guy. I think any of our guys could do it, but they're not trained to do it - they're trained to be unselfish! When a team plays the type of in your face defense like the 'pokes did today, we just pass the ball and pass the ball and pass the ball trying to find someone ELSE to carry us!! It's really frustrating! I sure hope these guys can pull it together, they're runnin' out of time! STEP UP GUYS!!! ROCK CHALK JAYHAWK!!!

kcchieeefs 14 years, 4 months ago

WHY THE FUK DONT WE PLAY A ZONE... WHY FUK IS RUSH AWFUL... WHY THE FUK DO OUR UPPERCLASSMEN GUARDS TURN THE BALL OVER 22 TIMES???? I want answers

Brian Powell 14 years, 4 months ago

Turnovers.. and silly fouls.

Not to mention some scared offense (gotta drive and draw fouls against the zone -- and we gave up on the drive too early. Need some tips? Watch the OSU guard Eaton.)

jayhawkaloogie 14 years, 4 months ago

A three-pointer? Down by one and Rush throws up a three?

CaramelMacchMan 14 years, 4 months ago

KU??? one of the premier team????

WE SUCK Period.

let me say that again... WE SUCK...

I'm losing faith in this team...

jayhawkinATL 14 years, 4 months ago

We SHOT OUR WAD right before the KSU game!!!!

sava312 14 years, 4 months ago

KU cannot finish the close ones. This team is another "Bucknell bait" in the tourney.

kcchieeefs 14 years, 4 months ago

If this team does not learn how to play a complete game of offense without fouling the shi* out of the other team then we will lose in the 1st round to a 14-15 seed who can shoot the trey (which we also cant do)

Brian Powell 14 years, 4 months ago

good point jyhwkfanincali -- we HAVE to figure out how to score against the zone D.

If they're not falling, we can't rely on 3s and jumpers

jayhawkinATL 14 years, 4 months ago

Hate to see BEASLEY walk-the-walk AGAIN next Saturday!!!! Glad we won't be playing him and the 'Cats in Africa...that's just another road game to be lost!!!!

Mangino_Maniac 14 years, 4 months ago

Very surprised to see the outcome of this one... what a bummer.

rcaltrider 14 years, 4 months ago

OSU can have Self at this point. Sherron Collins is supposed to be quick and have great ability to penetrate the lane, yet he is not even in at the end of the game to drive the lengh and get a layup to win the game. Chalmers is clueless at the end of the game as is the rest of the team. Eaton knew what to do, the entire KU team did not. Eaton did not get fouled but he got himself into a position to allow the ref to make a horrible call and that is what happened.

fansincewilt 14 years, 4 months ago

This is a good team. Some of you fellas need to get a life. This team may not win it all, but I believe they will go far. It's been an extremely rough week for the team. I think we need to give them a little slack. I'm still behind them.

jayhawkinATL 14 years, 4 months ago

Not looking forward to the ISU game...that place has NOT been friendly to us over the years.

Brian Powell 14 years, 4 months ago

jayhawkaloogie - there was under 2 seconds left when he had to shoot up that three

kcchieeefs 14 years, 4 months ago

Last thought... starting line up next year = PG - Sherron Collins SG - Mario Chalmers SF - Brandon Rush PF - One of the Little's C - Cole Aldrich

The only player even near good enough to play in the NBA on this team is Jackson but I think Arthur will also go... while I hope Rush goes he honestly would not be selected PERIOD

hail_2_old_KU 14 years, 4 months ago

I love how our team thinks we are the best team in the league............Oh really, last I checked three teams have whipped our little butts, we are not tough enough right now to make it through the tourny.

jhwkfanincali 14 years, 4 months ago

If I am not mistaken, we still had a time out. Why not use it with 7 seconds to set something up. Oh yeah, we wanted to catch them off guard and get the lay up. No wait, drive in a crowded lane a attempt a double teamed 3.

jayhawkinATL 14 years, 4 months ago

Point is...Rush shouldn't have had to shoot that three!!!!!

Brian Powell 14 years, 4 months ago

true, rcaltrider - I bet Collins could've shredded that zone, I like to see him more

jayhawkinATL 14 years, 4 months ago

Quit being like KSU fans and complaining that the officiating cost us the game. Great teams adjust to horrible officials!!!!

KUglow 14 years, 4 months ago

What pisses me off the most is now I have to sit and watch the UT-Memphis game tonight and watch that f'in ticker all night shouting at me about this loss. UGGGHHH.

Mr_Sandman 14 years, 4 months ago

If Rush or Arthur think they are NBA ready then they are sorely mistaken. NO mental toughness, no pair of balls, no aggressive play. If they come out they better book a pair of plane tickets to go play in Turkey with Cartier Martin. WOULD THIS TEAM PLEASE LEARN HOW TO PUT AWAY AN INFERIOR TEAM. NOT JUST THIS YEAR BUT SINCE SELF GOT HERE!!!! I agree with anyone that says Self should be gone if we go out before Elite Eight, I have supported him in the past, but we cannot keep doing the same sh*t every year.

sava312 14 years, 4 months ago

This team is lacking heart. When's football begin????

NH_JHawk 14 years, 4 months ago

I'm with you fansincwilt. I'm still behind them too.

1 bad loss doesn't mean we cant have a run in the tourney, but we do have to solve the perimeter defense issues, 3 pt shooting, and find some damn heart and passion between now and then.

Note to Self: GUT CHECK TIME! Time to do some soul searching and ask ourselves who are we gonna be down the stretch?

Ed Fox 14 years, 4 months ago

Of course, all of the idiots are out. The worst part of being a KU fan is the the freakin' KU fans. Seriously, this team doesn't suck, you fans suck. Bunch of cry-baby fair-weather idiots who couldn't play basketball to save their lives but know so much about coaching it. The same people who had their noses in the team's rearends when they were whatever and 0, but are calling for people's heads now that they've lost....OMG....their 3rd game of the year!

Seriously, I can't stand the people on this message board. This University needs to find a way to get some real fans of the team - people who care about it win or lose and don't lose their heads every time the team loses a game - even one it shouldn't have.

They played like crap. They've had a tough week, they went in to play a team who treated this like a Final Four game and they didn't play well. They feel worse about it than you do and than you people ever will. They're in a slump that they need to work their way out of, they'll get there.

And for those calling for Coach Self's job - how many titles did the idiot before him win? How many flameouts did they have? I love KU, but we still have just 2 tournament titles - Coach Self is hardly alone and hardly the problem.

Brian Powell 14 years, 4 months ago

Oh - yeah, a T.O. would've been nice there with 10 seconds left and THE GAME ON THE LINE!? How'd we miss that one?

ps- We didn't shoot 18 FTs because we didn't ATTACK like Eaton did.

Ed Fox 14 years, 4 months ago

Hey rcaltrider - do you even read KU news or just wait to come out when they lose? Sherron's knee is hurt again. He's not fast right now.

jhwkfanincali 14 years, 4 months ago

KUglow....Think of this. The ticker shouldn't sting as much because the season isn't over. It is just a loss...an unexpected one but nevertheless, a loss. Remember it is not a March Madness loss.

Ed Fox 14 years, 4 months ago

Uh - last I saw we were 15/17 BP2U - we got to the line a lot.

jayhawkaloogie 14 years, 4 months ago

Jyhwkfanincali--why call a timeout for Self to draw up a turnover?

jayhawkinATL 14 years, 4 months ago

Once again, the opposing team's guard uses us like a $2 hooker!!!! Where the "F" is our lock-down guard play?!?!

kcchieeefs 14 years, 4 months ago

BANNERFORKIRK... name 2 good teams that kansas has beaten???? WERE NOT VERY GOOD

rcaltrider 14 years, 4 months ago

The last shot was not Rush's fault. Chalmers was out of control and couldn't drive into the lane and threw a desperate, off target pass to Rush who had no choice but to shoot it. If Chalmers had thrown the pass where Rush could catch it cleanly, he would have had an open shot while in rhythm and might have made it. So blame the last play on Mario and also Self for not calling a T.O. to set up a play (although I'm not sure he would have called anything that would have actually worked.)

Jared Wagoner 14 years, 4 months ago

fansincewilt, "They had a rough week", they had the week off, what were they doing. Obviously not focused on what they needed to be. They need to pull their heads out. I am a true KU fan. This game was supposed to be an easy W.

Brian Powell 14 years, 4 months ago

Yes, but my point was that their guard Eaton had 18 just by himself :(

ps- Get off your highhorse :) I'm a fan win or lose; not everyone calls for the coaches job after a loss or says they just plain suck, etc.

When did Collins hurt his knee again??

Mr_Sandman 14 years, 4 months ago

I am not saying that I know how to coach basketball, that is not the point. This team needs a motivational speaker as much as a coach. This should not be necessary on a top 5 team. These guys should want to win and if they come out looking so sloppy and unmotivated that does fall on Self, at least partially.

jhwkfanincali 14 years, 4 months ago

jayhawkaloogie---basically the play that was run was a turnover so at least they would have had a set play to try something. Hindsight is 20/20...we win the next two COMFORTABLY

janeyb 14 years, 4 months ago

Christ people don't you read any articles. Collins has a deep knee bruise. He couldn't practice this week. He was lucky to play at all today and if you didn't notice he couldn't run. Eaton is everything we want Collins to be--but not today.

jayhawkinATL 14 years, 4 months ago

WE HAVEN'T BEATEN A RANKED TEAM ALL YEAR!!!!

ku98 14 years, 4 months ago

Bannerforkirk, who the hell are you to question anyone's "fanhood" or basketball knowledge here? You don't know me, and you probably don't know anyone else on this board, so if you don't like the message board, then don't read it.

lance1jhawk 14 years, 4 months ago

Well said Lebowski... Pull it together people. Yea this team needs work and yea no Big 12 championship this year. This loss does not make a season a total loss. Lots of B-Ball left to go.

sava312- Spring game is April 12th

jayhawkinATL 14 years, 4 months ago

I'd like to know the highest RPI team that have beaten.

NH_JHawk 14 years, 4 months ago

lance1jhawk....RIGHT ON! KEEP THE FAITH!

I still think we'll have a run come tourney time.

Ed Fox 14 years, 4 months ago

BP2U - didn't call you out on that - was just pointing out the FT thing. There are enough people here calling for his head and they're making fools of themselves and KU with their whining. And my high-horse certainly isn't nearly as ridiculous as those posts that I'm referring to.

And ku98 - I'm whoever the hell I want to be. If you can't support the team - don't watch them and don't root for them (nice logic - hope you don't mind me borrowing it). I'd rather be the one supporting my team, even during the bad, than the one jumping off the bandwagon and sounding like a MU or KSU fan when our team loses. I don't know any of you - but I know what you post and I know that the people posting the things I'm describing are exactly what I say they are - fair-weather, cry-baby idiots - as shown by their actions.

kcchieeefs 14 years, 4 months ago

I dont understand how we bring i studs and they dont seem to put it together here.... for example Arthur, Collins, Chalmers, and Rush were all projected 1st round picks when they commited to Kansas... now 3 out of 4 ofthem would not be getting drafted... What is going on at our elite program?

jayhawkinATL 14 years, 4 months ago

jhwkfanincali...I wouldn't count on a win at ISU...they took the Longhorns to OT, for Christ's sake!!!!

Brian Powell 14 years, 4 months ago

Oh, I guess I'm not a REAL fan if I don't sit around all week and read every article written about KU... lol

I agree lance, I will gladly trade 3 or 4 losses for a better-than-first-round showing in the tourney.

jhwkfanincali 14 years, 4 months ago

Arizona is the highest RPI team we have beaten

Ed Fox 14 years, 4 months ago

I should also add that based on the comments that I'm referring to - I'm glad I don't know any of you - who needs more people like that in their life?

Jared Wagoner 14 years, 4 months ago

BANNERFORKIRK: I am not a fair weather fan, in fact the weather here sucks :), and so did KU playing today. We are lucky to not have lost by more than we did.

jayhawkinATL 14 years, 4 months ago

Really, jhwkfanincali??? That SUCKS!!!! I definitely wouldn't consider that one a "quality" win.

hawkshock 14 years, 4 months ago

Come on folks, calm down. No, this should not have happened. Yes, we looked really bad with the ball. I remember a really good 1986 team choking at Iowa State. We lost. Maybe it will happen again. Maybe we will learn. Quit trying to sell Bill Self to Pickens. Enough already.

kcchieeefs 14 years, 4 months ago

NH_JHAWK

The only way this team makes a run is if someone can take over and become our go to man... turn on the Memphis and Tennessee game tonight and I gaurantee you that both teams have one guy erupt for 25 - 30 points. I believe a team needs a go to guy down the stretch and right now we dont have one... with that said ROCK CHALK

jayhawkinATL 14 years, 4 months ago

hawkshock...we're just all so sick and tired of experiencing such losses...ESPECIALLY IN THE NCAAs!!!!

jhwkfanincali 14 years, 4 months ago

Good Wins RPI 1-25: Arizona RPI 26-50: @Southern California, Oklahoma, Baylor

We all know the bad losses

NH_JHawk 14 years, 4 months ago

Bannerforkirk makes a great point.

I'd rather support my team, win or lose, than throw in the towel or "jump off the bandwagon." Like I said after the Texas game...TOUGHEN UP! To play the game is to sometimes lose the game. Be thankful that losing is something KU doesn't do very often.

lance1jhawk 14 years, 4 months ago

Its pathetic to see so many people jumping ship and calling for Coach Self to leave... These are the same IDIOTS that called for Larry Browns head in '88. Think people! Screw it... All you fair weather fans should just start cheering for Memphis! You are pathetic!

jayhawkinATL 14 years, 4 months ago

Bill was WRONG...the winner of the Big 12 is only going to have TWO losses.

Ed Fox 14 years, 4 months ago

Not calling you out as not a REAL fan BP2U, but I think it's fair to respond to people questioning why he wasn't there with the reason - he's hurt. I also think that people who want to judge the Coach and the team should be expected to have a bit more complete knowledge when they're calling them out. Not saying that's you - haven't gone back to see all of your posts - but there are enough people here making themselves and KU fans look bad without you being one of them.

Anyway - you people are right - no reason to keep reading these posts. The good fans will continue to be good fans - the whiny idiots will continue to be the whiny-idiots.

I'll be a fan and support the team no matter what and question them when need-be, but in a responsible, grown-up way. The other good fans will do the same. The rest of silly people here will continue to embarrass themselves.

cincyHawk79 14 years, 4 months ago

Hawkshock

Laughing....Great play Self called out of the timeout. Use Robinson and Kaun in a two man play. Our last 4 possessions were flat out ugly!

Self can recruit but he struggles as a leader.

jayhawkinATL 14 years, 4 months ago

Got to admit though...when we do lose, we pick the doosies.

Alan Mills 14 years, 4 months ago

In all my years, that is without doubt the most embarrassing loss by a KU team I've ever seen! Those of you who seem to think OSU is any good are on something. That is a horrible basketball team. Which, of course, means we're even worse! #5? Hah. We don't belong in the top 50. We have so many serious issues, it isn't even funny. Bottom line, our team is soft. And, our coach is soft. Did you see Coach Self when Arthur fouled out? He's asking Arthur what he was thinking committing that foul. Arthur tries to say that he didn't do anything. And Coach Self, looking like he's going to cry, is whining to Arthur that he did, indeed, foul him. Only a soft coach would have that conversation with a soft player. Otherwise, Arthur would have never been in that situation, and certainly would NEVER have implied that he didn't foul! That one scene sums up our team. We rotate 9 soft guys in and out of the game. Our top 3 players don't get to play! Aldrich, Reed, and Tehan are clearly the best and toughest basketball players we have. Sad to see. Well, at least we can watch two really good teams tonight. Glad we won't ever have to play either of these teams. Just think what that would look like!!!

jhwkfanincali 14 years, 4 months ago

Texas would be a good loss if there is such a thing

kcchieeefs 14 years, 4 months ago

BannerforKirk... just because i question the coaching in tough games does not make me a fairweather fan. I simply think this team is not at its full potential and I see no signs of them getting there anytime soon. I am simply frustrated, I still love the hawks, but I am realizing that we are not as good as we once thought. Honestly we are about the 10th or 11th best team in college bball. If the tourny started tomorrow we would be in for some big trouble, but it doesnt, so these losses might be a good thing in the end. We will have to wate and see

cincyHawk79 14 years, 4 months ago

Agree Crimsoinracine... Play Tehan and Reed. Why is Stewart getting so many minutes? He may play better defense but he can't score.

jayhawkinATL 14 years, 4 months ago

I agree...I would much rather see Reed on the floor than Stewart. Stewart is a dribble-off-the-foot waiting to happen!!!!

Jared Wagoner 14 years, 4 months ago

BannerforKirk, I am a true KU fan, I am just fueling an needed fire. We will be ready later this week. I do believe we will do fine in March, We need to step it up though.

ku98 14 years, 4 months ago

BannerforKirk, again, who the hell are you to question whether I care about the team or not? Like it or not, I am as big a KU fan as anyone out here. But if we play like crap, I say "we play like crap". I am not going to sit back like you and say "oh well, that's ok, it is only our 3rd loss of the year". You should wipe that sh*t in your eyes and see that we have now lost 3 of the last 7, and March is around the corner.

jayhawkinATL 14 years, 4 months ago

I definitely think we are going to lose more than 5 games this year...at least 3, if not 4, more.

NH_JHawk 14 years, 4 months ago

kcchieeefs,

It only takes 1 game for someone to step up and turn it on. 1 game that's it. If you're playing the odds on this team (a great team) then someone will indeed step up. And with the depth of talent we're talking about here, chances are very good that we'll have a good tourney run.

Like you said "ROCK CHALK JAYHAWK!"

Keep the faith my friend....keep the faith!

methawk84 14 years, 4 months ago

This was not a March Madness loss, but a bad loss nonetheless. I don't think we settled for jumpers or threes too often. Our guards, other than Rush, never seem to even look for a three early in the shot clock. It doesn't take Kevin and Clark to let us know that KU needed to attack the rack in the closing seconds. That would mean Chalmers or maybe Robinson. Rush is a patsy around the rim.

The officiating was bad. How many times was Eaton bailed out 35 feet from the basket? The last call against Sasha was ridiculous. Eaton descending and Kaun ascending, an easy block and a blown call. Is it me, or do we see three to four of these Big XII games each year with KU involved in a battle of attrition with no ebb and flow? The officials tend to take the artistry and strategy out of some of these encounters.

By the way, I truly love Sasha's intensity, but is there anyone out there who has poorer hands than Kaun? Around our house we call him Sasha "Scissors-Hands." He has very little instinct for the game.

Rush should go pro. I watch very little of the League, but to talk about him making any sort of an impact there is ridiculous. Same with Collins. Has Collins dominated more than just a handful of games. (Yes, I know he is hurt.) Collins and Eaton received an LJW article today calling them mirror images: short of stature, orotund, fast-food crazed young bulls. Collins entire season, save some of those early season blowouts against Emporia State and the like, have not even equalled this one outing.

The 'Hawks do have time to turn this thing around. It's never about who is playing the best ball in late February. I wish we would win every game, too. Getting hot at the right time, health, luck of the draw, officiating, providential bounces, unbelievable individual efforts -- you never know which way this thing will go. But as a perennial Top 5 team, it seems like it does not go KU's way quite often enough!

But at this moment, it looks like we won't get much deeper than the Sweet 16.

jayhawkinATL 14 years, 4 months ago

Yeah, I definitely feel like we just can't get over the hump compared to other "elite" teams!!!!

doug_lemoine 14 years, 4 months ago

Say what you will about the officials, but the Hawks had chances and they made nothing of them. I've heard Self say, "Players make plays," and, in close games, his strategy seems to be to run Mario off picks and let him improvise.

The problem is that Mario is not getting it done; nor is anyone else. Arthur still picks up freshman fouls; Rush disappears; RussRob makes terrible decisions; Sasha stops looking for his shot. (Where would we be without D-Block?)

A more disciplined offense might give the team better-quality chances, but that's not the direction Self has taken. It's not too late to implement more explicit play-calling for those later possessions, but I would guess that they're committed to more flexibility to take advantage of the players' athleticism. And who knows, these failures (against UT and OSU) may result in more refined decision-making when it counts. Wishful thinking, but we've all seen teams grow from losses like these.

Can't imagine why they didn't call timeout, though. Did Self think there was a mismatch? If so, the players didn't recognize it, and the last possession was just a catastrophe. (Still, if Mario had been Eaton, they probably would have called a foul when got bumped while splitting the defense.)

Greg Lux 14 years, 4 months ago

Its the team or the coach .. maybe both ... but if the best shot we can get with 12 seconds left down by one is a guarded offbalance 3 then something is wrong ... we ended the game the way we played the game .. sloppy and mindless ( not to take anything away from OSU ) but we surely have a better offensive play then what I saw at the end of the game. Maybe the only plus out of this is the fact that authur and rush are no where near ready to play at the NBA level. So the posibliliy of there leaving is less and less each week. ( Personal opinion of course ).

okjhok 14 years, 4 months ago

Being a true fan is not the same thing as blind loyalism. I'll always be a KU fan. I'll be there to tell everyone when they're playing like the best team in the country. I'll also be there to tell everyone when they play like sh*t, like today. And I'll question the coach when it's obvious that the coaching had something to do with the outcome of a game. That doesn't mean I want him to lose his job. I'm not a fair-weather fan. I'm a realist.

cincyHawk79 14 years, 4 months ago

Agree that we were off this week and had some off the court personal stuff to deal with and now this. We better right the ship very quick. We already look to be a 2 or 3 seed and playing away from Detriot. It we set up nice for this year and for me from Nati. Laughing I was being a little selfish. Now we will be playing UCLA in near their home again or Duke in Charlotte.

We need a better offensive set up and it is great that we are hitting free throws but now we can't hit or guard a 3. Our guards are so lazy on the picks up top.

Alan Mills 14 years, 4 months ago

kcchieeeeeefs - 10th or 11th best team in the country? Wow, did you watch that game? Did you see us struggle at home against a less-than-average Arizona team? Did you watch Baylor's guards take us to town for 40 minutes? Your tag makes sense. You probably thought the real Chiefs were the best AFC team not to make the playoffs!

On another note, am I the only one tired of seeing all these experts telling everyone who is critical that they are not real fans. Hell, if you aren't so totally shamed about your fanhood you want to bury the KU flag in the backyard, burn your diplomas, and turn all the KU shirts into car rags, you aren't a real fan. These are not flash-in-the-pan players! We have a team loaded with talent. For them to lose to a team like that is beyond belief! Self doesn't need to quit. And, he's not going to OSU. They just kicked our ass with an awful team and the worst coach in the history of the game. Why would they want our coach? No, Coach Self just needs to toughen up. There was a point in the first half when a real tough coach would have put in the 5 white guys at the end of the bench, just to make a point! Not Coach Self. He puts Arthur back in with 2 fouls! He's just too nice. That's it. And, as long as he's too nice, our players will be soft.

jayhawkaloogie 14 years, 4 months ago

Hey bannerforkirk: people who whine about people who whine are even worse. Any fan has the right--nay, the responsibility--to be angry and frustrated when their team comes out lame and loses. If you're a parent and your teenage son knocks up some girl, would you be angry, or would you be supportive and look forward to him wearing a condom for the next girl?

okjhok 14 years, 4 months ago

Hey, at least it's Saturday night. Time to get a lighter head for this heavy heart...

cincyHawk79 14 years, 4 months ago

Yep hope Rush does go pro. Tired of seeing him dissapear. How many times did he take it down the lane and miss the runners?

Open for a three and throws up an airball? Maybe good pass to Robinson.

Arthur has a lot to learn and would be stupid to go pro. He has to get tougher. Collins played hurt today at it showed.

Robinison again tried to do too much.

Self looked clueless and again should have thrown Reed or Tehan in to get more offensive.

NH_JHawk 14 years, 4 months ago

okjhok,

Now you're talking! I like that idea!

lance1jhawk 14 years, 4 months ago

Yep- Thank god no worky tomorrow, open up the scotch NH_JHawk, time to put this loss behind a hangover in the morning. :o

Ian Brown 14 years, 4 months ago

I'm full of crap, Lebowski? I would say that those charging fouls against OSU towards the end of the game were terrible calls. And as I read somewhere else on here, which was dead on, the reason why we didn't shoot as many free throws as OSU is because we didn't have anyone attacking the rim like Eaton did for OSU. The refs did not decide this game. KU's lack of mental toughness and ability to close close games decided this game.

I dont begin to profess to be anything more then a true heartsick KU fan. But I dont understand how we can have a guard who is shooting 44% from 3 point land who is not taking wide open looks time after time .. defenses are packing it in on use knowing we dont want to shoot ... until we start to show some balance in our scoring we are not going to be the team we need to ( and can ) be. Its time to wakeup and get back to the strengths we have available.

cincyHawk79 14 years, 4 months ago

W had their Bigs in foul trouble and did not attack them. Again Self needs to understand game situations.

OklahomaJayhawk5 14 years, 4 months ago

The refs were on Eatons side all game. But it just comes down to us not having a leader on the floor. We just arent as good as what we all thought. Period.

cincyHawk79 14 years, 4 months ago

Agree Oklahoma...I would like see those on the bench play more. Probably a lot hungrier to win!

Matt Kenton 14 years, 4 months ago

After a week of practice, we should have looked SHARP today.

Do we even practice offense? It doesn't look any different than it did in the Texas loss (exact same end-of-game play). Other teams are getting better, we're staying the same or getting worse. It's not too late, but there need to be some BIG changes NOW.

I'll say it again... anything less than the Final Four is an underachievement for this team.

cincyHawk79 14 years, 4 months ago

Agree Matt but with this loss we made the road from paved to gravel. We will get a very tough game just to get to the Sweet 16.

We still have a chance to get a 1 seed back but we have to make changes. Too much talent in a bad offensive and defensive scheme. Teams have figured out our defense and using our defensive switching in their favor.

NH_JHawk 14 years, 4 months ago

lance1jhawk,

you know it. no work tomorrow and it's time to put this loss behind us. get it out of my mind. scotch on the rocks...let it sit....then bottoms up!

Debbie Mangen 14 years, 4 months ago

What has happened to our even as much as attempting to shoot from outside? We have all these hot shot shooting guards. Why do they insist on going inside to collapse the defense? Please, please, please! at least TRY a 3 once in awhile. You can't make them if you don't at least try. That's about all we did pre-conference, and now that it truly counts, we don't even try a few. Mario... he use to play through a screen and put it up. RR shot them well and Sherron was usually unconscience. Tell me where or when Brandon Rush went to Self and said, I want to be the go-to guy. Maybe he doesn't want that. Then for Pete's sake, make someone else "the guy"!!! If Rush doesn't want to carry this team, its about time Self went to Mario or RR and said this is your team, go out there and take control. Darnell Jackson has carried this team all year, he's been consistant from day one.

babyjayhawkfan 14 years, 4 months ago

I just got home from the game and I get more pissed the more I think about it. I am still a KU fan until the end, but seriously. I know this has been mentioned, but BENCH THE STARTERS!!!! I can't guarantee the others will play with as much "talent," but they will def. play with more heart...which is what this team desperately needs. I can't believe that a team with as much "depth" as KU cannot find 1 guy to step up and be a leader. 12.6 secs left, 1 TO and we manage to take an off-balance 3? Unacceptable!!! I thought we had learned our lesson after the K-suck lost, but then came TX. So then I thought we had for sure learned our lesson after that one, but nope,...we lose to OSU!!!!! Granted, we only have 3 losses, but my concern is who are our quality wins against? Arizona? I hope we are able to pull it together before March or it is going to be another one and done season.

Dale Koch 14 years, 4 months ago

The problem with this team? Sherron Collins is not the Sherron Collins of old. He is the catalyst of this team and without him, we really struggle.

frompekka2sasha 14 years, 4 months ago

I'm not concerned about this team at all. No one is playing well right now with the exception of DJ. I know it's not baseball season but I think the same analogy applies when looking at offensive struggles. If no one is hitting at the same time = losing streak. If everyone is hitting = winning streak. Florida lost 3 games in February last year and they looked eerily similiar to this KU team right now. We all know how capable this team is when they are firing on all cylinders. Let's quit overreacting to things and face the fact that we have 1 bad loss in 27 games played!! On a neutral floor this team will be fine.

If our guys get hot at the same time, and you never know when it's coming, this team could still win it all. Would Memphis run the table in the Big 12? Hell no!! UCLA lost to Texas at home. UNC has looked awful at times. Duke lost twice this week. It happens folks. The sky is only falling for those of us who want it to fall.

jhwkfan1625- This is the new era of college bball where premiere programs are always going to take the extra home games for $$$. Our non-con schedule was good on paper and those teams just ended up not being good.

FlaHawk 14 years, 4 months ago

I don't mind getting beat by OSU. The fact that we lost three road games with basically the same formula is discouraging.

Team was unfocused, allowed he tempo to be controlled, no one step up their game, total lack of organization to score the FINAL BASKET (a crazy 3 pointer when a foul or 2-FG would have won or gone to overtime)?

I am a believer in Coach Self, but the last two minutes of a game is not his forte! This team lacks chemistry and is offensively challenged at all levels.

Anyime KU can not score more than 60s they are dead, especially on the road.

At least, the team is educated and can read their clippings (NBA contract potential) because they are way overrate on the court. There is NOT a player on this team that is even a Top 25 all-time at KU (maybe not even top 50)!

They have to play as a team and with chemistry. Coach self is not doing the alchemy job, by playing he same old same old players and tempo.

Dale Koch 14 years, 4 months ago

NO team has ever won a Nat. Title when no one on the team averages over 16 pts. a game. Guess what, we have no one that averages 16. Nuff said.

Dale Koch 14 years, 4 months ago

Beasley, with 28 at half time against BU

frompekka2sasha 14 years, 4 months ago

dek9219- It's easy to pull one statistic and say that but there are several others that say we are only 1 of about 6-7 teams that do have a chance to win a NC. Using SEVERAL offensive and defensive efficiency categories would say that we have the entire package. Not trying to argue just saying that one stat doesn't prove anything unless you take other stats and bundle them all together.

Not sure where "heart" comes into play but that is something we seem to lack at times. I hope we get it back and your one statistic is proven wrong. Rock Chalk!

BCRavenJHawkfan 14 years, 4 months ago

Notice how Memphis is dictating the tempo. Gee, ya think KU should have done that. There are some things we can be thankful for. 1. Thank goodness we played a bunch of NAIA teams to pad our record otherwise it would be NIT time. 2. Thankfully we still have those comparisons with the '88 team that are true, niether the '88 or '08 team was a conference title contender. 3. Thank you OSU for keeping us from even being considered for a # 1 seed; it would have been far too embarrassing to be the first # 1 to lose to a # 16. 4. Special thanks to Mangino for football at what used to be a basketball school.

cincyHawk79 14 years, 4 months ago

Wathing the Memphis - Tenn game. We are not playing anywhere close to that level. We would be down 15 early.

cincyHawk79 14 years, 4 months ago

Like someone mentioned earlier...Why call a timeout to create a turnover.

Agree on Self just can't coach.

actorman 14 years, 4 months ago

"NO team has ever won a Nat. Title when no one on the team averages over 16 pts. a game."

Florida LAST YEAR: Green 13.3, Brewer 13.2, Horford 13.2, Noah 12.0, Humphrey 10.3.

Congratulations, dek9219, for looking like a COMPLETE MORON! I have a novel suggestion for you: why don't you actually know what you're talking about before spouting crap.

jdhawk97 14 years, 4 months ago

This reminds me of Self's second year - amazing start with a deep, talented, experienced team, and then fade down the stretch. We need Arthur to stay in the game, Sherron to create, and Kaun to get some offensive rebounds and putbacks. Otherwise the drought becomes 21 years.

okjhok 14 years, 4 months ago

Okay, the alcohol is starting to take effect. This has to be a record for comments on this site in an 8-hour period. They really came out of the woodwork after this one. I bashed the 'Hawks earlier. I'm sorry for yelling at you guys. I love you. I know you'll turn the corner. The Jayhawks will be back. I have no doubt...

I've have wasted my time reading this page looking for jross or the other one that starts with a J. I couldn't find them. At least they have something intelligent to say. Not that some of you haven't. But here, if anything, I hope happens. I hope KU is in a slump. And comes to actuality and says,"Hey we can play better than this." But being a KU fan since I can remember, i'm really starting to lose faith in this team. They play pathetic, like they dont care. I used to say, "Memphis isn't good. They haven't played anyone good!" But now as I watch Tenn vs. Memphis, we can't hang with them. At least not how we are playing right now. Do or die i'm a Jayhawk fan for life no matter what! Rock Chalk Sad Jayhawk!

BCRavenJHawkfan 14 years, 4 months ago

Who cares about anyone averaging 16 PPG or a group of 4 above 10 PPG; statistics are for losers!

Laughing IdDoAnything2Win so I changed my name from Jross??

IS IT FOOTBALL SEASON YET? LOL. Man oh man, everyone upon everyone is bashing our Hawks. Tonight, I can't argue against any of your statements. The one thing I hate and I am getting tired of is people saying "Oh, it was on the road, OR We get everyone's best shot. We are everyone's title game." Shouldn't that mean we should rise to the occasion? Shouldn't that motivate our guys to say, "Hey, give us your best shot and we will still take you down."

Another thing I can't stand, why oh why don't coaches earn their paychecks by calling timeouts and setting up a play??! 12.3 ticks on the clock and we get the infamous handoff to Mario to see if he can pull up for 3 AND a desparation pass to Rush in the corner for 3. GIve me an F'ING break Bill! I understand you want to go with the flow of the game, BUT, there is something to be said with huddling your guys, knowing what your options are and executing a play. I get so sick of us playing on and getting nothing out of the last possession.

If the Hawks player read this, you all better understand that this is it guys. This is the year. Final Four or bust. If you don't make it happen this year, it will be a long shot with all the new players next year. You better start playing like everything is on the line the rest of the way. I hate to say it, but I smell a 2nd round exit for this team if it continues like this the rest of the way.

Wow, what a game Memphis and Tennessee. Pearl just actually fouled a guy with a 3 point lead. That is a refreshing strategy. Hey somebody tell Bill to turn on ESPN and get some coaching tips.

jayloco 14 years, 4 months ago

Hawks will probably be 9 or 10 in the new polls. What a jumble up top.

Role Reversal: Is it football season yet?

jaybate 14 years, 4 months ago

We aren't as good as we thought, but this loss is not the end of the dream.

Remember after the KSU game, everyone panicked. KSU had to be a Top 5 team, folks were saying. They had the big guns. But then KSU fell faltered.

Remember after the Texas loss, everyone panicked, but then were were still in it.

Now we're a loss down on UT, but still a game up on KSU. UT should win the conference, but they could be upsed, or we can get them in the post season tourney.

Its not every day you play with two players with murders to deal with.

Yes, we play dumb at the end.

Yes, Coach Self has got look in the mirror about late game coaching.

Yes, we're not going after the guys with fouls.

Yes, our guards, our guards are taking it to the hole and not dishing too much.

Yes, we are NOT going to be anywhere near our best if Collins can't get well. Without his speed, penetration and trey shooting, we've always had problems. Until he's back to full speed, we're going to limp along with him and we're going to have to run the offense through the bigs.

Yes, we are going to have start living and dying with Mario's trey shooting on kickouts from the bigs.

Yes, Brandon is not the player he used to be.

But last year we made it to the Elite Eight with Kaun finally essentially able only to limp, because of a knee injury.

We've been here before. Collins is slowed. Brandon is a different guy.

Its times like these that a team sometimes takes a few losses while it is trying to find a new way to win.

We are no longer a running team. Coach Self is coaching a very limited hand right now and the players are trying to find ways to win in new ways.

They are resourceful. They may find a way.

jaybate 14 years, 4 months ago

THOUGHTS ON TREY SHOOTING...

The guys keep proving that they can't play big minutes and hit treys.

THOUGHTS ON ARTHUR...

Darrell played like an air head today.

He disappeared against weak competition.

Something is preventing him from developing further.

What is it?

THOUGHTS ON BIGS...

KU used 4 bigs.

Only one came to play--Darnell Jackson.

The rebounding, as usual, was anemic.

THOUGHTS ON STRATEGY FROM HERE ON...

If Collins will heal by Madness time, then we've got to stand pat and take some losses until he gets well.

But if Collins won't heal until after the season, its time to junk the existing double high post pick and roll game and replace it with the way KU played Simien's senior season. Collins and Brandon can't cut it putting the ball on the deck anymore. Its time to live and die with Darnell Jackson. The ball has to go into Dblock in the low post EVERY trip down the floor. Self has to ask DBlock to score 25 points EVERY night the rest of the way. Brandon and Mario have to become the outside trey shooters he kicks out to of when doubled down and he can't dish to the other post.

We have to mix zone with M2M.

We have to conserve energy and commit to half court slow down.

But only if Collins can't get well.

melrank 14 years, 4 months ago

Jay:

We outrebounded them 34-21 and 12-3 on the offensive glass. Can you explain your concern? I thought we controlled the interior pretty well for the most part.

I love the idea of dumping the ball into Darnell more. The guy shoots a high % down there and it could open up more spot-up 3's for our perimeter guys. Not to mention, he would probably be better positioned for more offensive rebounds if we was camping out down low more often. Our guards are getting shut down on dribble penetration which really is the starting point of our offense so let's add a new dimension. Question: Is he a good passer when defenses start to collapse a little?

You know, for all of Julian's goofiness, he came to play in big games quite often. I miss that. DA doesn't seem to rise in the big moments like Julian did.

More zone? I can't get excited about that. Only Syracuse can make that work. But, getting beat on the perimeter play after play after play isn't working, either. So, maybe a more frequent change of pace would be a good idea. It usually protects against foul problems (see DA again), helps conserve some energy, and we have good length. I'm ready to try something.

So much for the false Tyrel Reed sighting last week.

Last comment (for now): Speaking of that Simien team. He didn't always make it, but when the game was on the line and the ball was in our possession, you knew Keith Lankford was going to be the man to take the ball at the top of the circle and make it happen. You knew it and I was glad he had it. Oh, to have a guy like that on our team now.
