Rituals for ’88 will work in ’08

I was a freshman at KU during the 1988 National Championship run. I lived in Corbin Hall with my roommate Lisa and we watched the first two rounds at the local watering holes. We drove around campus celebrating with everyone after defeating K-State and making it to the Final Four in KC. The actual Final Four, however, we followed a very specific set of rules. We stayed in our dorm room, and watched it unfold on an incredibly small television set. After beating Duke to make it to the title game, we took stock of what we were wearing, what we had eaten, and every other detail so we could replicate everything for the championship. When “Danny and the Miracles” pulled off their magical upset of the “Cabbage-Patch dancing” fools from OU, we again roared up on campus to celebrate with all of Lawrence. Classes were actually canceled the next day so everyone would welcome the team back at Memorial Stadium. What a thrill … I realize now, 20 years later, how lucky I was to have had that experience. They don’t come around very often. So to all the current KU students who are there now and reliving the excitement I once felt, savor every moment. This is a time most don’t get to enjoy. As a pride-filled KU Alum, I just want to say Beak ‘Em Hawks! I have washed and pressed the lucky shirt I wore for the Final Four in 1988 and it is ready to celebrate again. I have every confidence this year will end just as the 1988 Tournament did….with my Jayhawks hoisting another NCAA Championship Trophy!
