On the road again. That’s the mantra of Kansas University’s softball team.
For the fourth straight weekend, the Jayhawks will participate in an out-of-town tournament, this time making the relatively short journey to Tulsa, Okla., for a four-team invitational.
In today’s openers, Kansas (7-5-1) will meet Iowa State (3-12) at 12:30 p.m. and host Tulsa (7-9) at 5:30 p.m. The Jayhawks are scheduled to tangle with North Texas (3-10) at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, then play another game later Saturday and a finale on Sunday.
Catcher Elle Pottorf has been KU’s leading hitter in the early going. The red-shirt sophomore from Topeka is hitting .355 and shares the team lead in RBIs with seven.
Freshman Amanda Jobe is hitting .321, and soph Dougie McCaulley has a .306 batting average. McCaulley, a transfer from Odessa (Texas) Junior College, also is the team leader in stolen bases with five.
Senior Kassie Humphreys leads the mound staff with a 6-1 record and 1.70 earned run average. Humphreys is averaging one strikeout per inning pitched.
After 18 consecutive road games, the Jayhawks are scheduled to open at home March 9-11 in the Jayhawk Invitational, a four-team tourney that also includes Drake, North Dakota State and New Mexico.
